    As of Friday, May 15, the following Fine Wine & Good Spirits, in counties designated in the yellow phase of COVID-19 mitigation efforts, will reopen to limited in-store public access. The following mitigation efforts will be in place: • Stores will limit the number of customers in a store at a given time, allowing no more than 25 people (employees and customers), and further restricting the number of customers in smaller stores. • The first hour each store is open each day will be reserved for customers at high risk for COVID-19, including those 65 years of age and older. Voluntary compliance from all customers is encouraged in the interest of protecting the health and safety of our most vulnerable community members. • Customers and employees will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing, guided by signage throughout the stores. • Signage will also direct customers to follow one-way patterns to avoid cross-traffic and encourage them to refrain from touching products unless they intend to buy them. • Store employees will perform enhanced and frequent cleaning and disinfecting, and store hours will be modified to ensure appropriate time for cleaning and restocking. Prior to opening to the public, each location was professionally sanitized, and plexiglass was installed at registers to provide a physical barrier between employees and customers at checkout. All Fine Wine & Good Spirits employees are being provided masks, gloves and frequent opportunities to wash hands. Each store reopening to limited public access will continue offering curbside pickup to the best of its staff’s ability. All sales are final.

    From McAllister, M.P., Sewell, Jr., E. H., & Gordon, I. (2001). Comics and Ideology. NY: Peter Lang. @2001 Peter Lang. Chapter 2 Ownership Concentration in the U.S. Comic Book Industry Matthew P. McAllister In the May 24, 1998 issue of The New York Times, there appeared a 3,200-word essay about the Marvel Entertainment Group, for years the dominant publisher in the comic book industry (Bryant, 1998). The illustration that accompanied the story was a drawing of two angry figures slugging it out in a fierce battle royale. However, this article did not appear in the entertainment section, the arts section, or even the book section. It appeared in the business section. The article was not about the hottest titles, characters or artists, but instead about stock values, junk bonds, and corporate assets. And the two figures pummeling each other were not fictional superheroes, but rather cari- catures of two Wall Street moguls, Ronald Perelman and Carl Icahn. In fact, the news article focused specifically on the dire nature of the comic book market and the struggle for control over Marvel, the industry leader, that took place between these two financial tycoons. This article joined a series of news reports from 1996 through 1998 that appeared in other business venues like The Wall Street Journal, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Financial Times of London. Such articles collectively presented a troubled image of the economic and industrial dynamics of the comic book industry in the late 1990s. This chapter will focus on these dynamics from the perspective of political economy, arguing that the comic book industry is characterized by increased conglomeration and ownership concentration.

    NEWS RELEASE For immediate release – June 2, 2016 Literacy superheroes save the day Students at Bishop Klein School have designed their own comic books—complete with 3D-printed characters—to promote youth literacy. Comic-Klein, an event showcasing their work, was held at the school on June 2. Special guest Tom Grummett, an artist with DC Comics who has worked on titles such as The New Titans, The Adventures of Superman, Superboy, Power Company and Robin, was at the event visiting classrooms, answering student questions and showing some oF his own work. “I was the kind oF kid who would read everything I could get my hands on, and comic books grabbed my attention,” said Grummett. “I’ve been Fortunate; I was able to turn my passion For reading into a career. Maybe one oF these students will be able to do the same.” Based on the popular Comic-Con events Featuring comic book heroes and villains, the showcase Featured the work oF students in Grades 5 to 8 who created their own comic books. Using a 3D printer, students brought their characters oFF the page, and, using stop-motion animation, brought them to liFe in a short movie. “Superheroes are hugely popular. We thought it would be a great way to pique the interest oF our students,” said Kayla Elash, the Grade 7 teacher at Bishop Klein who spearheaded the initiative. “Blockbuster movies, action Figures and other merchandise have their roots in comic books, so we went back to those roots to stress the importance oF literacy and reading.” Elash noted that adding modern touches with the 3D-printed characters and stop-motion movie made it interesting and relevant For today’s technologically-driven students.

As the comic-book industry was undergoing major internal changes that allowed for more mature, adult storylines, creators challenged the Comics Code Authority’s 1954 sanction against the representation of homosexuality to create, for the first time, openly gay characters. Creators’ efforts were driven by a desire to recognize the reality of gay men’s lived experiences, especially crucial in the epidemic time of the AIDS crisis.
