  • Shorshei Minhag Ashkenaz Minhag Ashkenaz: Sources and Roots
Shorshei Minhag Ashkenaz Minhag Ashkenaz: Sources and Roots By Rabbi Binyomin Shlomo Hamburger Synopsis ofvolulnes I-IV Machan Moreshcs Ashkenaz The Institute for German-Jewish Heritage Bnei Brak 2010 Cutting A Boy's Hair Without Doing a Chalaka (Ups herin) The German custom to bring a young boy to the synagogue with a wirnpel (wrapping for the Torah scroll) has no connection whatsoever to the practice of the chalaka (the Arabic term 0h for Upsherin) observed by Sepharadirn and later adopted by many Chasidirn. The custom of holding a special celebration marking the boy's first haircut developed among these groups. The celebration takes place at a specific age, usually three. The festivity is customarily held near the gravesite of a tzadik or in a synagogue. This custom was unknown in ancient Sephardic and Ashkenazic communities. The earliest reports of the chalaka celebration are found in accounts written by Sepharadim early in the period of the Acharonim. Some three centuries later, we find the first indications that the custom had made its way into Chasidic circles. The most important source concerning the chalaka is the account of the celebration in which the Ari-zal is involved. The details of this story are somewhat vague, and it is unclear whether the Ari-zal made a chalaka for his son, or whether the account refers to his disciple, Rabbi Yonatan Sagish. There is also some question as to whether the Ari-zal patrticipated in Lag Ba 'orner events in Meron after his kabalistic insights because the custom to conduct a chalaka on Lag Ba 'orner runs in opposition to the Ari-zal's final ruling that forbade hair cutting during the orner period.

  • “He Has Tzitzis Hanging out of His Ponytail”
3 “He Has Tzitzis Hanging Out of His Ponytail” Orthodox Cultural Practices and How BTs Adapt Them Erev Shabbos (Sabbath Eve) One late Friday afternoon, I arrived at the Greenbaums’ home on Parker Street, near the middle of a block that had become very familiar to me. During my fieldwork, I spent several Shabboses and holidays with various families on this block, where twenty-five of the twenty- eight families are Orthodox Jews. Since traditionally observant Jews do not drive on Shabbos, they either live within walking distance of a synagogue or regularly spend Shabbos with people who do. This block was about a fifteen-minute walk from Shomrei Emunah, the largest shul in Milldale. Wearing a long skirt, long sleeves, high collar, and hat, I opened my bag and took out my thank-you gift, a bottle of kosher wine. Mrs. Greenbaum showed me to the basement, where I would be sleeping, and suggested that I dim the lights so that the room would be illuminated enough for walking around but still dark enough for me to sleep. The laws of Shabbos do not per- mit turning lights on or off. The six Greenbaum daughters who were still living at home— ranging in age from five to twenty—showered and dressed for Shab- bos, and Mrs. Greenbaum and I lit the candles. Mrs. Greenbaum changed into her tailored skirt suit and replaced her cloth head covering with a medium- length sheitel. We then took out some folding chairs and sat on the front lawn to wait for Rabbi Greenbaum to return from shul.

Lag Ba-Omer and Upsherins in Recent Jewish literature: Revisionist History and Borrowing and Plagiarism Lag Ba-Omer and Upsherins in Recent Jewish literature: Revisionist History and Borrowing and Plagiarism By Eliezer Brodt In this post I would like to touch upon some of the topics relating to Lag Ba-Omer through a discussion of the latest volume of R. Tuviah Freund’s Moadim le-Simcha. By way of introduction, in the past few years, the field minhaghim, specifically the research and investigation of sources and reasons for custom has expanded exponentially. To be sure, from early rishonim and onwards we have many books discussing minhag. But, only more only more recently, did the systematic study and collecting of sources as they relate to minhag really start. The basic idea underlying this particular area of research involves digging up as many sources as one could related to a particular minhag and then to try and put together a comprehensive picture of the development of the specific minhag. This is a time consuming process. To begin with, one has to carefully track down early sources, figure out who is earliest source, and then try to understand the reasons given for the custom on the whole. Additionally, one has to be mindful of who influenced whom, separate the development from the original unadulterated custom, as customs, being the product of human development tend to themselves to develop over time. The older a minhag is, the more difficult a challenge as the possible source texts multiply and patience is required to put together the whole puzzle.

SHABBAT SCHEDULE Dear Members & Guests, EREV SHABBAT | FRIDAY NIGHT When Yaakov was running from his brother Eisav, the Torah relates the EARLY CANDLE LIGHTING 3:44 PM episode where Yaakov was forced to stop on Har HaMoriah, Mount CANDLE LIGHTING 4:23 PM Moriah – the future site of the Beit Hamikdash, because the sun had suddenly set. He creates there the Tefillah of Maariv and then went to MINCHA/MAARIV 4:30 PM sleep and had the famous dream of the ladder that was planted on the SHABBAT DAY ground but it’s top was in the heavens. In the dream Hashem is DAF YOMI 8:30 AM “standing” over Yaakov, promises him the Land of Canaan and that he will be with him on his journey into exile, but will eventually return him to MORNING SERVICES 9:00 AM the land. This was the same place where his grandfather SUNDAY Avraham had bound his father Yitzchak, ready to offer him as a korban because Hashem had commanded him to. This story was a defining DAF YOMI 7:15 AM moment in his families' history, it must have been retold many times, in SHACHARIT 8:15 AM all its detail, and Yaakov had no idea where the place was or its MONDAY — FRIDAY significance? It sees very unlikely.
