CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS OF THE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY CHAPTER OF THE HONOR SOCIETY OF PHI KAPPA PHI Revised July 2007 BYLAWS OF THE Louisiana State University Chapter The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi For the purpose of promoting high scholastic standards at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; maintaining a chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi chartered and installed at Louisiana State University in 1930; and furthering the ideals and objectives of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi; the members of the Louisiana State University chapter do hereby adopt the following Bylaws for its government. ARTICLE I Name and Objectives Section 1. Name. The name of this organization is the Louisiana State University Chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Section 2. Purposes. The primary purposes of this organization are to promote the pursuit of excellence in all fields of higher education; to recognize outstanding achievement by students, faculty, and others through election to membership and through various awards for distinguished achievement; and to engage the community of scholars in service to others. Section 3. Governing Regulations. This organization shall be governed in accordance with the Bylaws of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Inc., as adopted by the XL Triennial Convention on August 11, 2007, with amendments, if any, that may be made from time to time, and by the provisions of these Bylaws with amendments, if any, that may be made from time to time. 1 ARTICLE II Membership Section 1. Membership in this chapter is open to qualified scholars with integrity and high ethical standards from all academic disciplines.

WHY ACCEPT OUR INVITATION? Congratulations! If you have been invited to accept membership in a collegiate honor society, it means that you have been recognized for your accomplishments and character. But did you know that the meaning of the invitation depends on the purpose and stature of the society? !e purpose of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Omicron Delta Kappa as honor societies is to celebrate excellence in academics and integrity of character. Our societies exist because those who founded them believed, as we believe still, that there are achievements worthy of celebration: academic work of extraordinary quality, exemplary leadership, and research that advances human knowledge. Our invitations recognize distinguished performance in study, research, or leadership, sustained over a period of years. So our invitations are typically extended late in the undergraduate career or even a"er graduation, marking the transition from accomplished work of high merit to further exceptional attainment. Honori#cs vary in value, so it is important to #nd out which ones matter the most. Our societies do not aim to supply a mere credential: belonging to our societies means more than simply a certi#cation of your grade point average or your resume. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines. Its chapters are on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Since its founding, Phi Kappa Phi has initiated more than 1 million members. Comprised of the best and brightest from all academic disciplines. Only two other honor societies, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi have requirements for membership as exacting as Phi Kappa Phi's. Unlike other honor societies whose undergraduate members may include freshmen and sophomores, Phi Kappa Phi celebrates upperclassman and graduate student scholars. Eligibility Requirements By invitation only. Must be an outstanding student of sound character, enrolled at a college or university with a Phi Kappa Phi Chapter. Juniors must have completed 72 credit hours and rank in the top 7.5% of their class. Seniors must rank in the top 10% of their class. Graduate Students must rank in the top 10% of their class. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Accepting Applications for 2020 Awards Program The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society—is currently accepting applications for its 2020 awards program including Fellowships, Study Abroad Grants, Literacy Grants, Love of Learning Awards, Scholar/Artist and Distinguished Service Awards. These awards provide funding for graduate study, continuing education, professional development, studies abroad and local, national and international literacy initiatives. Since 1932, Phi Kappa Phi’s awards program has recognized members and students on its chapter campuses for outstanding academic achievement. Nearly $1 million is awarded each year through programs that last year recognized more than 350 individuals. Programs currently accepting applications include: • Fellowships: The Society recently announced an expansion of its Fellowship Program from a total distribution of $345,000 each year to $615,000. Beginning in 2019, 50 Fellowships of $8,500 each, six at $20,000 each, and two at $35,000 will be available to members entering their first year of graduate or professional study. The deadline to apply varies by each Phi Kappa Phi chapter. Contact your local chapter for deadline information. • Study Abroad Grants: 75 grants of $1,000 each will be awarded to both members and non-members studying abroad. The deadline to apply is March 15. • Literacy Grants: Grants of up to $2,500 are available to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and individual members seeking funding for literacy initiatives. The deadline to apply is April 1. • Love of Learning Awards: 200 awards, at $500 each, are available to help fund post-baccalaureate studies and professional development for active members.
