Indian Ocean Turtle Newsletter No. 12 A 16-year record of green and hawksbill turtle nesting activity at Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary, Redang Island, Malaysia Eng-Heng Chan1 Turtle Conservation Centre Terengganu, Malaysia Email: [email protected] Introduction South China Sea Redang Island Kuala Redang Island (5º 44’ – 5º 50’ N and 102º 59’ – 103º 5’ E) Terengganu is located in the South China Sea, off the east coast of N State of Terengganu Peninsular Malaysia (Fig. 1). It has a land area of about Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary 25 square km and is 45 km north northeast of Kuala Terengganu. It is a popular tourist destination and also Mak Kepit T. Mat Delah Teluk home to the largest aggregation of nesting green turtles Pasir Bujang Dalam Mak Simpan in Peninsular Malaysia. The mean concentrations of ammonia, nitrate, total dissolved N and total particulate N were 43 µg/L N, 195 µg/L N, 485 µg/L N, 431 µg/L N, respectively. In contrast to N, lower mean concentrations of P were recorded with values of 2.30 µg/L P (dissolved inorganic P), 4.84 µg/L P (total dissolved P) and 8.35 µg/L P (total particulate P). In general, higher concentrations of nutrients were recorded in the middle and lower reaches of the river basin due to human activities. Elevated levels of both forms of nutrients were present during the wet season due to terrestrial run-off to the water column. -

Vol. 2, No.1 December 2010 SEATRU Newsletter SEATRU Updates on Conservation, Research and Outreach Programs 2010 Message from the Team Leader This year seems to have flown by in a blink. Without realizing it, we are almost at the end of 2010. This year was the second year for my team with SEATRU. With hard work, dedication and commitments from my team members, I can conclude that this year went off better compared to last year. Off course we have encountered few obstacles along the way, but when we work as a team definitely we could overcome each hurdle. The best thing was, as of the previous year we had fun in performing our work, and we have ended this season with joy and laughter! This year the nesting at Chagar Hutang had increased compared to last year. Monitoring was conducted for the whole year from January to December 2010. We have recorded a total of 676 nesting, of which 661 were green turtle nests and 15 were hawksbill turtle nests. From these a total of 40,000 healthy hatchlings were returned back to the sea. Our sincere thanks to all SEATRU volunteers (Slot A to Slot Z) for helping us in monitoring and protecting turtle nests at Chagar Hutang. It has been 18 years since SEATRU first started the sea turtle conservation program at Chagar Hutang. The unit is still very much active and dedicated in saving the sea turtles even though project leaders have changed hands. It is because of your support and action that motivate us to keep on going. -

We have achieved commendable performance and undergone GROWING A challenging periods in the past, yet never before have we faced a situation LEGACY OF that undermined global financial stability, ground economies worldwide to a standstill and humanity suffered through the tragic loss of life, STRENGTH retrenchments and loss of income. As a Terengganu state-owned Government-Linked Company, Golden Pharos Berhad (GPB or the Group) we had to act swiftly and take quick action to help our employees and the communities where we operate through enforcing strict health and safety protocols and income security. Governance and accountability were at the forefront throughout the year, and we had to urgently address risk issues in business continuity and operational and financial performance. In response to the crisis, we shifted work priorities to focus on the most critical aspects, streamlined procedures to speed up decision making, and continued active engagement with all our employees and multi-stakeholder groups. While the Group’s financial performance was negatively impacted, we remained resilient and steadfast in mitigating the risks by establishing several initiatives to ensure the Group’s business and operational sustainability. With continuous collaboration and support of our people and valued stakeholders, we can move forward with cautious optimism to overcome business disruptions. Armed with determination, grit and genuine concern to revitalise and stabilise GPB, we aspire to generate shareholder value continuously in Growing a Legacy of Strength. -
