On behalf of the FIN Board of Directors, welcome to the 2020 Atlantic International Film Festival – FIN Stream. 2020 has been a year of incredible uncertainty and change for everyone, and we are more grateful than ever to be able to continue to provide you with the opportunity to view world-class films from Atlantic Canada and beyond. Importantly, the change to this year’s festival is allowing us to reach more of you – our audience. Although you will experience this year’s festival in a different way, I am confident that what has not changed is the exceptional and diverse content that will be available to you. I encourage you to take advantage of the added flexibility of this year’s program. Our team is at the ready to help you navigate the streaming platform and the content. I want to extend the Board’s deepest gratitude to FIN’s Executive Director, Wayne Carter, and our hard working staff, who have had to “pivot” more times than I can say over the last few months to ensure that you will continue to receive the same outstanding Nova Scotia: film festival experience. Thank you also to our government, corporate and individual community partners. We truly could not do this without you and, in times like these, your continued support means everything. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank you, the audience, for continuing to support the Atlantic International Film Creativity and Community Festival and all of FIN’s programs throughout the year. Film has a unique way of bringing people together and although we cannot physically be together this year, I hope that you will continue to experience those feelings of community as we navigate this “new normal”.

FIN Atlantic International Christena MacIsaac Film Festival Chair Chair of the Board, FIN Atlantic International Film Festival Alba Nuadh: Cruthachalachd agus Coimhearsnachd To say 2020 has been an unusual year would be an understatement and back in January as we began plans for our 40th Anniversary celebratory Film Festival we had no idea it would take the form it has. However, nothing inspires innovation and growth like challenge! For the first time in its 40 years, the Atlantic International Film Festival is truly an Atlantic Canadian event. When I joined the Festival organization 9 years ago one of my long term goals was to develop a way for the Festival to reach out in a concrete fashion to both creators and audience beyond Halifax and the surrounding area - and in a truly “silver lining” to this cloud we currently find ourselves under here we are. Kisite’tmumk Tla’sitew I would like to take a moment to give a special thanks to our supporters both Corporate and Government. In this most unusual and trying of times for all cultural events the FIN Stream Festival is happening because of your ongoing support. I would like to give my sincere thanks to all of you who volunteer not only for FIN but for all cultural events in Atlantic Canada. It Telo’ltimkewey No’pa Sko’sia is your enthusiasm and dedication that we miss so much but not to worry - we will hopefully be back in person in 2021 and we can’t wait to see all of you! I would like to thank the Board for your invaluable insight and support. To the staff, thank you is not enough. Your perseverance and passion for what we do is what got us here and will continue to push us forward. And finally to you the audience, thank you for your continued patronage and although we won’t be sharing stories and cheer in Executive Director person your support of FIN Stream will ensure that FIN will continue on to 2021 and beyond! Nouvelle-Écosse : Créativité et Wayne Carter Executive Director, FIN Atlantic International Film Festival communauté

Welcome to FIN Stream 2020! In a regular year we’d use this space to try to help you navigate the Festival’s challenging schedule. It’s always arduous to pick between films screening at the same time and difficult choices must be made. Well, things have changed slightly this year… An almost universal experience during this year’s pandemic is to find a silver lining in every corner of our lives. One of the greatest silver linings of a fully streaming film festival is that you can have it all. If you plan accordingly, you should be able to take in almost everything. No more pesky choices. Remember to hydrate. With 116 films in 53 screenings, from 22 countries in over 20 different languages, we feel that this year’s film program stacks up against any program in the Festival’s 40 year history. The films are just as great as they’ve always been. Only the screens have changed. And the heart of the program comes from the place most special and most important to the Festival, and that’s right here in Atlantic Canada. novascotia.ca/culture A heartfelt thank you to all of the filmmakers and to the Canadian film industry at large. We’ve seen them come together in ways we never thought possible and have been inspired to reach higher and farther to celebrate their films like never before. Please join us in supporting their incredible work. The Festival should feel familiar and brand new all at the same time.

Nothing about the bullet-scarred building—one of hundreds in central Kabul—indicates the astonishing story that unfolded within the walls of Afghan Film. It was here that an impassioned clique of filmmakers, often working across enemy lines, gave birth to a progressive national cinema in one of the most underdeveloped societies on Earth. And it was here, in an episode worthy of a spy thriller, that a clandestine network of cinephiles conspired to protect this precious legacy from the iconoclastic fanatics who destroyed the great Buddhas of Bamiyan.
