Freddie Starr Des O’Connor www.chequermead.org.uk Leo Tolstoy once said “Spring is the time of plans and projects.” Well we certainly have plenty of those ahead. Chequer Mead is thriving and that is thanks to your support. I believe we have a very varied programme that offers something for everyone. We are seeing bigger and better acts, and consequently, bigger audiences, leading to many sold out shows. We are also seeing many visitors from outside the area, who are spreading the good word and returning with friends and family. With the improving quality of acts and new visitors, we have to change and improve with them. We have many plans for the centre, all of which are to enhance the experience of visiting our intimate venue. I ask you to embrace these changes and understand that they are all done for the good of Chequer Mead, and with the aim of a long and sustainable future. Take a look through the programme, and I’m confident there will be something in here that will be of interest. We have also launched our new app through mytheatre.com. Now you will be able to check out what is going on at Chequer Mead on the train home, or waiting to see the doctor! The app is downloadable from itunes or google play and is absolutely free. Don’t forget you can book your tickets online at www.chequermead.org.uk Thanks for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you in the theatre PETE JENKINS Centre Manager

CHEQUER MEAD Friends As a patron of Chequer Mead Community Art Centre we are sure that you would be more than happy to support its continuing success.

As a Friend of Chequer Mead you will greatly benefit the Art Centre. Your annual membership fee is used by the small Friends committee to provide items to enhance the centre for all its users and hirers.

In recent years we have been able to provide full height mirrors for the meeting and rehearsal rooms, child booster seats, 80 new chairs, stage condenser microphones, clip frames in The Pavilion, the planters by the front entrance, portable modesty screens. We continue to raise funds and meet the centre manager regularly to find out what is needed.

In return, we offer Friends concessions on some shows, we hold quarterly ticket draws so you could win a pair of free tickets to a show. We hold events just for Friends and Volunteers for example, we recently held a wine tasting evening, quiz night and a talk and we email regular newsletters to keep you informed of upcoming events and shows.

If you are interested in helping further, then why not join the Committee? We raise funds in addition to the membership fees by holding regular raffles, table top sales and run a 1001 Club. If you enjoy fund raising and have some good ideas we would love you to join us.

A NIGHT FOR ZAC THURSDAY 12TH FEBRUARY AT 7:30PM

Zac Worby is 8 months old. He has spent those first 8 months of his life in . Zac has RIRCD (reversible infantile respiratory chain deficiency) mitochondria myopathy. This is a very rare genetic disease with only 6 recorded cases in the world. It is a metabolic disease causing the battery cells (mitochondria) not to work properly. It causes a severe muscle weakness and this has triggered significant problems to feeding, swallowing and essentially his breathing muscles. Zac is now a long term tracheostomy vented baby requiring life support and intensive care. Due to his metabolic issues this affects his ability to fight infection only having half the energy source that ‘we’ have to survive. The uniqueness of his condition is if he can be kept well and supported this should reverse in 3-5 years, the danger is he could lose his fight due to infection before this. Zac’s parents, David and Kerry, already have a huge amount on their plate, with one daughter with Cerebral Palsy and Autism, and another with Dravet Syndrome, a life limiting epilepsy disorder. Together with Jed, their nine year old son, they are a family, with more uphill struggles than we can ever begin to imagine coping with. Living in Forest Row, we at Chequer Mead are hoping to raise as much money as we can to help Zac for his future. These funds will be used to purchase a specially adapted pushchair which will accommodate his ventilator, oxygen, suction machine and emergency equipment. This will enable him to be taken out once a day for a walk and give him a better quality of life. It will also help make adaptions to their home and for specialised play equipment to help him get stronger and develop. Three of the best tribute acts on the circuit have kindly offered their services, contributing to an evening of top entertainment. Fisher Stevens – Winner of the 2014 Elvis International Masters competition, will not only be offering us his remarkable tribute to The King, but also delighting us with the greatest hits of Neil Diamond. Never 42 – Bringing the hits of Level 42, such as Lessons In Love, Something About You, and Goes Down, Never 42 recreate the sound of the 80’s stalwarts with great accuracy. U2 Baby - U2baby, covering the music of U2 from the 80’s to the present day. Frontman Richard Peace is uncanny as Bono, and their portrayal of the Irish rockers is faultless. Pulizter Prize-winner Katherine Boo spent three years in Annawadi recording the lives of its residents. From her uncompromising book, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012, David Hare has fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale. India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil, twelve and stunted, wants to eat until he’s as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a ‘first-class person’, while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate. But their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage trade, and another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood. It was through the London Weekend Television series ‘Search for a Star’ in 1981 that Joe first became known to the British TV audiences as a singer and impressionist, and his success on the show led to appearances at the London Palladium and a month long season at London's Talk of the Town. Proving popular with TV audiences Joe Longthorne was given his own prime time TV series ‘The Joe Longthorne Show’ that ran from 1988–1991. Just as he reached this pinnacle of fame he was taken ill and struck down with lymphoma. Joe’s tenacity and determination to get back on stage saw him take on a gruelling UK tour and a trip to Australia resulting in sell-out performances at the Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House and the London Palladium. The next few years saw Joe bravely battle leukaemia with visits in and out of hospital and yet courageously continue to appear on stage giving performances that made him an inspiration for many. In 2007 Joe was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Variety Club of Great Britain, and in 2012 Joe received his MBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. In 2015 Joe Turns 60, and we are honoured to have him playing at Chequer Mead prior to appearing at The London Palladium on 31st May, which is his 60th Birthday!
