More Than Ready, the Frequent Flyer Cont
MONDAY, 30 JANUARY, 2017 NO RETIREMENT PLANS FOR STAND GUARD MORE THAN READY, Despite breaking the record for the number of wins achieved on an all-weather surface with Stand Guard (GB) (Danehill) THE FREQUENT FLYER trainer John Butler has no intention of allowing the 13-year-old rest up for too long. In winning a mile and a half handicap at Kempton on Saturday Stand Guard posted his 28th win on the all-weather eclipsing the previous record set by Don Cantillon=s La Estrella (Theatrical {Ire}) in December of 2015. "He got the record and he's good and fine after the race,@ reported Butler. "We'll assess him during the week, give him a few easy days and make a plan from there. There are races for him. The handicapper will have a say on Tuesday, and we'll see which bracket he is in, but if he's OK there is every possibility he might run again,@ Butler added. Bred by Juddmonte Farms, Stand Guard raced only once for Khalid Abdullah and Sir Michael Stoute before being sold at Tattersalls in 2007 for 22,000gns. Since then he has had six different trainers over an 83 race career and his victory on Saturday was his 17th for Butler. More Than Ready | Vinery IN TDN AMERICA TODAY By John Berry ARROGATE HEADS HOME It is likely that Danehill (Danzig) will always be considered the Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song), winner of Saturday’s GI Pegasus King of the Shuttlers. He retired to stud at the right time (1990), World Cup, began his journey back to his California base Sunday. -
Jockeys Profile
Jockeys Profile Avdulla, Brenton Age: 28. Brenton Avdulla was a leading apprentice in Melbourne before a ‘chance’ phone call from Gai Waterhouse saw him relocate to Sydney to be indentured to her. He has remained in Sydney since and was crowned 2017/18 champion jockey. Avdulla has ridden over 100 winners in his last five seasons in Sydney striking at no less than 14.5%, contributing to his total win tally of 1,124 (as of 25 November). His first G1 win came aboard the Grahame Begg-trained Secret Admirer in the 2010 Flight Stakes at Randwick and his first Australian ‘major’ came aboard Estijaab in the G1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill. Honours: Sydney champion jockey (2017/18). Hong Kong wins (as of 25 November): 0 Badel, Alexis Age: 28. Alexis Badel hails from a racing tradition, his mother being trainer Myriam Bollack-Badel and his father, former jockey Alain Badel. He was France's Champion Apprentice in 2007 and broke into the top 10 in the premiership in just his second year riding, with 60 winners. Badel's first Group race win came aboard Norse King in the October 2013 Prix du Conseil de Paris. He was appointed as the second retained rider for The Aga Khan behind Christophe Soumillon at the beginning of the 2015 racing season and went on to record his most successful season to date with 104 wins. That saw him obtain seventh position in the French Championship. He debuted at Sha Tin with two mounts on 11 December, 2016. His first Hong Kong winner was Supreme Profit on 27 December, 2016 and he ended that maiden two-month stint with seven wins. -
MALAGACY >RISES= to the OCCASION in REBEL
SUNDAY, MARCH 19, 2017 >DORI= FINDING U.S. RACING TO HER LIKING MALAGACY >RISES= TO With four-time champion Beholder (Henny Hughes) shipped THE OCCASION IN REBEL off to the Spendthrift broodmare band and with Eclipse winner Stellar Wind (Curlin) being brought along slowly towards a 5-year-old campaign, Saturday=s GI Santa Margarita Invitational S. shaped as a golden opportunity for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum=s Vale Dori (Arg) (Asiatic Boy {Arg}) to pick up a U.S. Grade I victory that would enhance her residual value once she is called to the breeding shed. While she may not be as brilliant or as talented as her fellow Argentine-breds named Paseana or Bayakoa, who between them won the Santa Margarita four times in six years from 1989-1994--each won two renewals--Vale Dori has quietly made a name for herself, near the top of the Southern California distaff division. She still has some questions to answer later this year, but for now, her career reached an apex with a gutsy defeat of reigning champion sprinter Finest City (City Zip). Oti Racing 29
OMCATROCBHE R2 2 9 2T0H2 02020 ISSVUOEL 2 091 1 OTI GAZETTE The official newsletter of OTI RACING and Management Aidan O’Brien’s Reputation Goes to a New Level IN THIS WEEK'S Aidan O’Brien and his sons’ reputations as trainers went to a new level last EDITION weekend when they decided to withdraw their horses from feature European races, along with Roger Varian. Not surprisingly, some of their peers who were also supplied by the feed merchants at the centre of this Upcoming OTI Runners OTI Fun and Games OTI NEWS controversy, decided otherwise! A CONVERSATION Given the apparent clearance of the infected product in Ireland, O’Brien WITH could well have “ran the gauntlet” in the hope that any trace of Zilpaterol DEANE LESTER would have left the horses’ systems by race time. He chose instead to scratch and hence protect himself, his horses and indeed the industry from possible negative consequences. JOHN BERRY Aidan O’Brien is a tall poppy, a natural target for some of his competitors GET TO KNOW YOUR and those who thrive on innuendo. Unfortunately for them, the reality is FELLOW OTI OWNERS that he is a training genius. As competitive as he is, we also now know that - TRACEY CHAPMAN he is not a ‘win at all costs’ merchant. Through his actions last weekend that potentially cost some horses a stallion career, he displayed a level of integrity that many of us would like to see throughout racing. FUN & GAMES In the meantime, those who ‘ran the gauntlet’ in the hope that their horses DICK WHITTINGTON will produce clear swabs, will endure a few sleepless nights waiting for results.
