KERALA

INTRODUCTION

Kerala Tourism is heading for a great leap forward during en- suing season .The State Gov- ernment has been aiming at rapid growth in this sector dur- ing its term .The liquor policy formulated by the previous Government had adversely af- fected the growth of Tourism and therefore it required certain concerted efforts to revamp the sector.The economic recession consequent to demoniti- sation,and imposition of GST by the Central Government had also contributed to several set- backs, which needed to be rem- edied. In spite of all adverse factors the tourists' arrival to the state during 2016 registered an in- crease by 6.29%over previous year.The domestic tourism grew by 15% while the tourism revenue by way of foreign ex- change increased by 15%.The overall income of the state from tourism for the year was Rs.29568 crore. The State has been formulating an eco friendly tourism policy ,that takes care of the nature and civilisation of the land.The Government also wants to involve the local people in the development of tourism and intends to share the benefits thereof among them for their overall welfare and well-being.It has framed a project called PEPER which meant Peoples Participation for Planning and Empowerment Through Responsible Tourism.This has already been inaugurated at Vaikom.It envisaged employment of about 1.5 lakh persons in the locality in different tourism related activities.Another program for the beautification of coastal areas is also under implementation with central assis- tance.

3 The Kerala Destination Development of waterways The Project for development of waterways being implemented in association with CIAL will give further impetus to tourism growth.The major tourist attraction in the state nowadays being lake tourism the creation of a better network of water ways will defi- nitely help to propagate lake tourism in a big way. Almost all the major tourist spots such as , , Ashtamudi, , , , Kumarakam , Kodungalloor and so on are located along the waterways.The rural life of Kerala is also there for viewing and enjoying during the voyages through its waterways. Village Tourism As part of responsible tourism program,the Tourism Department has formulated vil- lage tourism projects which marketed packages involving village tours and exposure to village life and sights to visitors.The Project also envisaged development of tradi- tional industries in the state such as coir,cashew,handloom,pottery,toddy tapping etc... Gavi-Thekkady Tourism Circuit A sum of Rs.10 crore has been earmarked in state budget for Erumeli Pampa Pilgrim Tourism Project .Likewise,the different tourist spots around are being linked under Green Tourism Project. With the relaxations in liquor policy,the sphere of business tourism is also much alive now and hence there is ample scope for recapturing the business losses in MICE tourism to competitors like and Srilanka.

GOD’S OWN COUNTRY, THE SCENIC DESTINATION FOR ALL In 2016, 1.31 crore residential visitors and 10.38 lakh tourists from abroad have visited Kerala which has produced 29,658 crores of income to the state. The central tourism group will be profited by Kerala. The Greater part of the visitors comes from U.K, U.S, Saudi Arabia, France, and Germany. With developing patterns in tourism, reports demonstrate that one lakh fifty thousand individuals will be profited with direct job, where 20 new ventures will begin this year in the heritage tourism field. Tourism Package projects will be masterminded in conventional occupations in the divisions of coir, handlooms, pottery, and toddy industry. Kerala has the world’s second-biggest backwater tourism. The major coastal spots of the state are Kumarakam, Ashtamudi backwater, Kovalam, Varkala, Kochi, and Kuttanad. Water transportation in provincial zones will alter the present status of the state. Sensible dreams of provincial life, houseboats and the magnificence of backwaters can be appreciated by the sightseers.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Area: 2132 sq Rm · Altitude: Sea level Located at the southwestern tip of , district is bounded by the Arabian Sea in the west and in the east. The wooded highlands of the in the eastern and northeastern borders give Thiruvananthapuram some of the most enchanting picnic spots. A long shoreline, with internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage make this district a much sought after tourist destination. Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala. Capital of the State, well renown beach resort at Kovalam, Mountain resort at , Water resorts at Veli, Akkulam. Agasthyakoodam forest range, Dams like Peppara and , Pilgrim centers such as Sivagiri, Anchu Thengu, , Thiruvallam, Shri Padmanabha Swami Temple, Palayam , Kanakakkunnu and Kavadiyar Palaces, Napier Museums, Zoo, Star Bunglaw, Vikram Sara Bhai Space Centre are the main attractions in Thiruvananthapuram.

Indian Airlines and Jet Airways operate domestic flights to different parts of the country. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM CITY Padmanabha Swamy Temple: The temple is located inside the . Dedicated to Lord , the temple is a blend of the Kerala and Dravidian styles of architecture. It is known for its mural paintings and stone carvings. One among the 108 sacred Vishnu temples in India, the presiding deity here is Lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha the Serpent.

Kuthiramalika (Puthenmalika) Palace Museum: The palace was built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma - the King of , who was a great poet, musician, social reformer and statesman. This rare specimen of workmanship in the traditional Travancore style of architecture also has exquisite wood carvings. The : Built in the 19th century, this Indo - Saracenic structure boasts a natural air conditioning system and houses a rare collection of archaeological and historic artefacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot and ivory carvings. Veli Tourist Village: This picnic spot, where the Veli Lake meets the Arabian Sea, offers boating facilities. Pedalboats and paddleboats can be hired to explore the charms of the lagoon in a leisurely manner. (Thiruvananthapuram) Thiruvallam (10 km): This serene backwater stretch, enroute to Kovalam, is famous for its canoe rides. (Thiruvananthapuram) Kovalam Beach (16 km - 1/2 hour): This internationally renowned beach has been a favourite haunt of tourists since the 1930s. Kovalam consists of three adjacent cres- cent beaches. The southernmost, known as the Lighthouse Beach, is the most popu- lar. Kovalam offers accommodation options to suit all budgets. Chacha Nehru Children’s Museum: Children of all age groups will enjoy the vast collection of nearly 2000 dolls, stamps and masks displayed here. Observatory: Located at the KANAKAKUNNU PALACE highest point in the city, near the Museum complex 60 metres above sea level, one can have a bird’s eye view of the city from here. The Kanakakunnu Palace: The palace and its sprawling grounds are today the venue for many cultural meets and programmes. Secretariat: Built in the Roman architectural style, this is the centre of government administration in Kerala and houses the offices of ministers and the bureaucracy.

Kerala Legislature Complex: Located at Palayam, this is the new building where the Legislative Assembly of Kerala meets. With its towering dome, exquisitely carved galleries, ornate teak panelling and ceiling, combined with the most modern acoustic treatment and state-of-the-art sound systems, the hall is a beautiful blend of classical grandeur and modernity. The Zoological Park: One of the first zoos in India, it is located in a well-planned botanical garden. With huge trees like frangipani and jacaranda dotting the sprawling lawns and wild fowl swimming in the lake, it is like a small jungle in the heart of the city. Science and Technology Museum Complex: The exhibits here are related to science, technology and electronics. Parasurama Temple, Thiruvallam (7 km): This 2000 year old temple on the bank of river , is the only one in Kerala dedicated to Sree Parasurama, the mythological creator of Kerala. Aruvikkara Dam (16km -1/2, hour): This picturesque picnic spot is on the banks of the . Sree Chithra Art Gallery: Located near the Napier Museum, this art gallery displays select paintings of , Svetlova and Nicholas Roerich and exquisite works from the , Mughal and Tanjore schools of art in India. The collection also includes paintings from China, Japan, Tibet and Ball. Agasthyakoodam: Part of the Sahyadri range of mountains, Agasthyakoodam is the second highest peak in Kerala, at a height of 1890 metres above sea level. Teeming with wildlife, the forests of Agasthyakoodam abound in rare medicinal herbs and plants and brilliantly hued orchids. A bird watcher’s paradise, this legendary mountain is accessible by foot from Kotoor, near , as also from . Varkala (40 km - 1 hours): Varkala is a seaside resort and spa. It is also an important Hindu centre of pilgrimage. The final resting place of the great social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru, is near Varkala, atop a hill called Sivagiri. High cliffs with mineral springs rise majestically from the coastline. The place where they prayed for redemption, came to be known as the Papanasham Beach

7 The Kerala Destination (Papanasham means redemption from sins). The 2000 year old Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple and the Nature Cure Centre are the two main attractions here. A century old tunnel is another attraction. Shankhumugham Beach (Thiruvananthapuram): The beach is adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram Airport and Veli Tourist Village. An indoor recreation club, the matsya kanyaka (a gigantic, 35 m long sculpture of a mermaid) and a restaurant shaped like a starfish are some of the attractions here. Varkala (Thiruvananthapuram) (40 km - 1 hours): Varkala is a seaside resort and spa. It is also an important Hindu centre of pilgrimage. The final resting place of the great social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru, is near Varkala, atop a hill called Sivagiri. High cliffs with mineral springs rise majestically from the coastline. Chowera (Thiruvananthapuram) : (8 km south of Kovalam) This fishing hamlet near Kovalam has many picuturesque spots. (Thiruvananthapuram) : An isolated but spectacular beach, Poovar is situated close to the Neyyar River estuary. A trading port in its early days, it is today an important tourist destination. The Folklore Museum set up in 1992 is a treasure house of quaint musical instruments, occupational implements, household utensils, models of folk arts etc. Anjengo Fort : (20 km South of Varkala) Originally built by the Portuguese as a depot to store merchandise, it was converted into a fort by the British, Sandwiched between the sea and the backwaters, the fort premises shelter ancient tombstones and a garden. Sivagiri Mutt: 200 acres of sanctified land, this is the final resting place of the most eminent leader , saint and social reformer of Kerala, Sree Narayana Guru, SNDP (Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam), the organization he founded for the upliftment of backward classes, is headquartered here. The Mahasamadhi of the revered guru is located on top of a hillock. Further down is the guru’s residence, where his humble belongings are kept on display. Ph : 0470-2602807, 2602455 Attukal Pongala : The ten day Pongala festial held at Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, 2km from Thiruvananthapuram, attracts thousands of female devotees from many parts of the country. Men are not allowed in the vicinity of the temple during the pongala. Pongala, a kind of sweet porridge, considered to be the goddess’ favourite offering, is cooked by each devotee in a clay pot over an open fire. The long line of women making the ritual offering extends up to East Fort and beyond.

CELEBRATE : (August/September) Onam is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in Kerala, and it commemorates the legendary rule of King Mahabali, under whose reign, the people were so happy that it aroused the jealousy of the gods.

Chandanakudam Mahotsavam : This colourful Islamic Festival is celebrated to commemorate Bee Umma, a saintly lady, whose tomp is in Beemapally, near Thiruvananthapuram. Rock Cut Cave Temple: (17km – 1/2 hour): There are rock cut sculptures of the 18th century in the cave temple at Vizhinjam. , (18 km -1/2 hour): Located on the way to the Ponmudi Hill Station and the Courtallam waterfalls, this ancient palace dates back to the 15th century. Here you can see a double storeyed traditional Nalukettu building with slanting gabled roofs, an inner courtyard and museums of folklore and numismatics set up by the Department of Archaeology. The Numismatics Museum houses rare and historically valuable coins denoting the trade relations of state. Sree Mahadeva Temple: Situated in Kazhakuttom, this ancient temple is believed to date back to the 14th century. Another old temple in the district is the Mitranandapuram Temple on the outskirts of the city. Palace (52 km - 2 1/2 hours. Closed on Mondays): The seat of the erstwhile rulers of Travancore, this splendid palace is situated at Thuckalai, on the way to . This is a well preserved wooden palace, a glorious testimony to the traditional Kerala school of architecture. The extraordinary murals, exquisite floral carvings and the black glossy granite floor have withstood the test of time. ERNAKULAM

Area : 2408 sq.km Altititude: Sea level is located on the cost of the Arabian Sea with Kottayam and alappuzha districts in the south, Idukki in the east and in the north. The commercial capital and the most cosmopolitan city of Kerala, Kochi in Ernakulam, is also known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. With one of the fiest natural harbours in the world, this was once a major centre of commernce and trade of the Arabs, Chinese, Portugues, Dutch, British etc.

ACCESSING ERNAKULAM (+91 0484)

Jew Town: The area around the Synagogue is a centre of spice trade and curio shops. Bolgatty Island: This tropical island is famous for its place of the same name. The was built in 1744 by the Dutch and later taken over by the British. Today it is a hotel run by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, with a small golf course and special honeymoon cottages. The Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura : 10 km from Kochi, Hill Palace, the official residence of the erstwhile Kochi royal family, was built in 1865. The complex consist of 49 buildings in the traditional architectural style of Kerala and is surrounded by 52 acres of terraced land with a deer park. A full-fledged ethno archeological museum and Kerala’s first ever heritage museum are the main attractions. (Dutch Palace) : Built by the Portuguese in 1557 and presented to Raja Veera Kerala Varma of Kochi, the place was renovated in 1663 by the Dutch. On display here are beautiful murals depicting scenes from the epics, and Mahabharatha, and some of the Puranic Hindu legends. Willington Island : Named after Lord Willingdon, a former British Viceroy to India, this manmade island is surrounded by beautiful backwaters. The island is the site of the city’s best hotels and trading centers, the Port Trust and the headquarters of the southern naval command.

Synagogue (Open 1000-12 hrs, 1500-1700 hrs. Closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays): Constructed in 1568, this is the oldest synagogue in the commonwealth. Destroyed in a shelling during the Portuguese rain in 1662, it was rebuilt two years later by the Dutch. Known for mid-18th century hand painted, willow patterned floor tiles from Canton in China, a clock tower, Hebrew inscription on stone slabs, great scrolls of the Old Testament, ancient scripts on copper plates etc. Museum of Kerala History: The museum showcase historical episodes from the neolithic to the modern era through life figures. Light ‘n sound shows are regularly organised with commentaries in English and . There is also a gallery of paintings and sculptures, displaying over 200 original works by contemporary Indian artists.

FORT KOCHI

Access: Backwater ferry/bus/auto rickshaw A leisurely walk through the city is the best way to discover historic Fort Kochi. An obscure fishing village that became the first European township in India, Kochi has an eventful and colourful history. Its reputation as a seafaring commercial town was such that Nicholas Conti, an Italian traveller of the Middle Ages remarked. If China is where you make your money, then Kochi surely is the place to spend it. The town was shaped by the Portuguese, the Dutch and later the British . The result of these cultural influences are seen in the many examples of Indo-European architecture that still exist here. PLACES OF INTEREST IN FORT KOCHI Vasco House : Believed to have been the residence of Vasco da Gama, this is one of the oldest Portuguese residences in Fort Cochin. /Vasco da Gama Square : These huge cantilevered fishing nets are the legacy of one of the first visitors to the . Erected here between 1350 and 1450 AD by traders from the court of Kublai Khan, these nets are set up on teak wood and bamboo poles. The best place to watch the nets being lowered into the sea and catch being brought in is the Vasco da Gama Square, a narrow promenade that runs along the beach. The Square is an ideal place to idle, with stalls serving fresh delicious seafood, tender coconut etc. Old Harbor House : This elegant old bungalow built in 1808 is in the possession of Carrit Moran & Co., renowed tea brokers, who now use it as their residence. The house was once a boat club. Santa Cruz Basilica : This historic church was built by the Portuguese and elevated co a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558. In 1795 it fell into the hands of the British

13 The Kerala Destination when they took over Cochin, and was demolished. About a hundred years later Bishop Dom Gomez Ferreira commissioned a new building at the same site in 1857. The church was proclaimed a Basilica in 1984 by Pope John Paul II. Fort Immanuel : This bastion of the Portuguese in Cochin was a symbol of the strategic alliance between the Maharajah of Cochin and the Monarch of Portugal, after whom it was named. Built in 1503, the fort was reinforced in 1538. St. Francis Church : Built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars, this is India’s oldest European church. This was initially built of timber and later reconstructed in stone masonry. It was restored in 1773 by the Protestant Dutch, converted to an Anglican church by the British in 1795 and is at present governed by the Church of . Vasco da Gama was buried here in 1524 before his remains were moved to Lisbon, Portugal. The tombstone still remains. Kumbalangi Tourist Village : Essentially a fishing hamlet, this tiny village facing the Kochi backwaters in the western part of the city is India’s first designated ecotourism village and the first rural tourism village of the state. Kalagramam, an artist’s village, displays handicrafts and fishing equipment. Mangroves are nurtures here as well as fish farming. Bait fishing is extremely popular among tourists here. The Bishop’s House : Built in 1506 as the residence of the Portuguese Governor, the Bishop’s House stands on a little hillock near the Parade Ground. The facade of the House is characterised by larger Gothic arches, and has a circular garden path winding up to the main entrance. The Dutch Cemetery : The tomb stones here are the most authentic record of the hundreds of Europeans who left their homeland on a mission to expand their colonial empires and changed the course of history of this land. The cemetery was consecrated in 1724 and is today managed by the Church of South India. Pierce Leslie Bungalow: This charming mansion was the office of Pierce leslie & Co., coffee merchants, founded in 1862. A representative of the Fort Cochin colonial bungalow, this building reflects Portuguese. Koder House : This magnificent building constructed by Samuel S. Koder of The Cochin Electric Company in 1808 is a supreme example of the transition from colonial to Indo-European architecture. David Hall : Though built around 1695 by the Dutch East India Company, David Hall gets its name from one of its later occupants, David Koder, a Jewish businessman.

Pamba: This is the main halting point on the way to . It is also known as Thriveni Sangamam - the meeting point of three rivers. Sabarimala (65 km from Pathanamthitta town, 180 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 210 km from Kochi): One of the most famous pilgrim centres in India, Sabarimala is situated on the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats at an altitude of 914 m above sea level and is accessible only by foot from Pamba (4 km). The temple is dedicated to Sree Ayyappa. Pilgrim season: November to mid January. Mandalapooja and are the two main events of the pilgrim season. The temple stays closed during the rest of the year except for the first five days of every Malayalam month and during (April). Nearest railway station: Thiruvalla (102 km). People of all castes and creed are permitted into the temple. However, entry is not allowed to women between 10 and 50 years of age. Maniyar (20 km from Pathanamthitta) : This is a beautiful dam site. Pathanamthitta town: This is the district headquarters. Pattumala (17 km east of Peermede, 28 km west of Thekkady): Lofty peaks, little streams and ever expanding tea plantations are the attractions of this place. Pattumala (which literally means hill draped in silk) is home to the two most famous tea plantation. Kuttikanam : a place for adventure tourism and trekking, or even a langourous, tranquil break. This picturesque plantation town washed in the fragrance of cardamom is surrounded by lush, green hills. Tribal Settlements in Peermede : The Orali, Malapandaram and Malayarayan tribes live in the hills of Peermde. Home of the Paliyvasal Hydel Power Project, this hill town is also famous lot its picturesque tea plantations. Arattupuzha: This village is known for Pooaram festival at the temple in April-May. The uniqueness of this festival is the ceremonial processions carrying the images of the deities of 41 neighbouring temples to this village.

Christian Divine Retreat Centres : They are located at Muringoor and near Chalakudi, on the Kochi -Thrissur route. Punnathoorkotta (2km from Guruvayoor): This home of 50 temple elephants offers unusual spectacles of the gentle pachyderm. Guruvayoor (23 km west of Thrissur): Guruvayoor is one of the most sacred and important pilgrim centres of Kerala. Its main attraction is the Sree Krishna Temple. This historic temple is shrouded in mystery. According to belief, the temple is the creation of Guru, the preceptor of the Gods, and , the God of winds. The eastern nada is the main entrance to the shrine. In the Chuttambalam (outer enclosure) is the tall 33.5 m high gold plated Dwajasthambam (flag-post). There is also a 7 m high Dipastambham (pillar of lamps), whose thirteen circular receptacles provide a truly gorgeous spectacle when lit. The square Sreekovil is the sacred sanctum sanctorum of the temple, housing the main deity. Within the temple there are also the images of Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa and Edathedattu Kavil Bhagavathy. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple. Vazhachal (68 kmfrom Thrissur): This picturesque waterfall is close to dense green forests and is a part of the river. Athirapally and Vazhachal are the most famous waterfalls of Kerala which attract tourists in plenty. Saint Thomas Memorial, Kodungalloor: St. Thomas is believed to have landed in Kodungalloor (formerly called ) in 52 AD. The St. Thomas Church established by him houses ancient relics. Cheraman Juma Masjid, Kodungalloor: Located 2 km from Kodungalloor town, this mosque resembles a in appearance. Built in 629 AD, this is the first mosque in India and the second in the world where Juma prayers were started. Koodal Manikyam Temple (21 km from Thrissur ) The ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Bharatha, the brother of Sri Rama. It is perhaps the only temple

The colourful eleven day annual festival with a pageant of thirteen caparisoned elephants is held in April/May. , Cheruthuruthy (32 km north of Thrissur): Cheruthuruthy is the seat of the Kerala Kalamandalam, renowned the world over for its Kathakali training centre. The music and dance academy was founded by the famous poet, Vallathol Narayana Menon. Training in Kathakali, Mohiniyattom, Thullal and other art forms of Kerala is imparted here. Cultural programmes are also arranged. Muris Heritage Village : (35 km from Thrissur) The ancient port city of muziris, once a major centre for trade and commerce, was the gateway for various religious faiths like Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Others. A thriving link in the Indo-Roman trade during the First Century BC, merchants from a number of cultures are believed to have operated in this port. Founded in i 902 by Vaidyaratnam P S Warrier, Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala has branches all over the State as well as in and Madras. One of the best Ayurvedic centres in the State, the Arya Vaidyasala runs an Ayurvedic research centre. Trikandiyur Shiva Temple: The idol at this ancient temple is said to have been installed by Parasurama, the legendary creator of Kerala. Thirurangadi: This is the place which withnessed the 1921 Malabar Mutiny. Poonkudil Mana: Situated 3 km away from town on the - road is this ancient mental health care centre. Thunchan Memorial, Tirur: This is the birth place of Thunchath Ezhuthachan, the father of the Malayalam language. On Vijayadasami Day, many come here for vidyarambham, the ceremony in which children are initiated into learning. Thirunavaya : (8 km south of Tirur) Situated on the banks of the Bharathapuzha, this place was once the venue for Mamangam, a grand assembly of the rules of Kerala, held once in every 12 years. It is here that the Chaver soldiers prayed for 41 days before embarking on thier suicide mission to kill the Zamorin. This extravagant festival was conducted for the last time in 1766. Today, Thirunavaya is the venue for the annual Sarvodaya Mela. Thali Temple, Perinthalmanna : The temple is located about 3 km west of Perinthalmanna on the way to Malappuram. The peculiarity of the Silent Valley Forest is that it is devoid even of the chirping of cicadas. Vehicular transport is possible only up to Mukkali, nearly 24 km from the park. The rest of the way has to be covered on foot up to the source of Kunthipuzha which flows through the valley before merging into River Bharathapuzha. Kalpathy Agrahara and Vishwanatha Swamy Temple: (By the southern banks of the Kalpathy River, on the road to Mannarkad and Kozhikode. Open 0500-1100hrs, 1700- 1930hrs) This Siva Temple built as a replica of the Kasi Temple at Benares, dating back to 1425 AD, has an imposing kodimaram or flagpole. ESSENTIAL KERALA World’s Best Breakfast: Kerala wakes up to one of the best breakfasts in the world – both in terms of taste and nutritional value. Some of the items that usually occupy the morning table are the (made of rice flour and coconut) and kadala (gram) curry; (noodle-like rice cakes) and egg/vegetable curry; (soft centered lacy pancakes) and mutton/vegetable stew. Little wonder that Travel & Leisure chose Kerala’s morning spread as one of the best breakfast of the world! Sumptuous Sadya: Served on a plantain leaf and eaten with the hand, the sadya is the traditional feast of Kerala. A five-course meal, the sadya includes an amazing variety of up to 27 vegetarian delights. Crispy pappadoms (wafers deep fried in coconut oil) and a variety of pickles accompany this sumptuous spread. The Sadya is rounded off with different varieties of payasams (sweet deserts). Seafood Delights: With a long coastline, over 44 rivers, innumerable lagoons and lakes, Kerala has abundant marine wealth. Among the seafood delicacies are prawns, lobsters, crabs, mussels etc. all enticingly cooked with exotic spices. Karimeen or pearl spot, a backwater fish, is famous for its great taste. Irresistible Delicacies: The Moplah cuisine of Malabar and the Syrian Christian cuisine of Central Kerala are unique in its rich flavor. While the former show clear Arabic influences, the latter has been influenced by Syrian, Dutch, Portuguese and the British. Extensive use of fish, red chilies and kudampuli, a souring agent sets apart Syrian Christan cuisine. The lightly flavored aromatic Malabar Biriyani is a treat for the taste buds. Spectacular among the festivals of Kerala are the poorams held in the temples of Central Kerala. The poorams are marked by their impressive procession of caparisoned elephants and Panchavadyam, the traditional percussion ensemble. , often referred to as the Mother of all Poorams is noted for this spectacular display of fireworks. Elephant Pageants No celebration in Kerala is complete without an elephant pageant. This gentle giant is

The elephant pageants feature colorfully decked-up pachyderms, with mahaouts atop them holding aloft tinseled silk parasols, swaying white tufts and peacock feather fans. Boat Races The largest team sport in the world, the snake boat races of Kerala are held in connection with Onam, the harvest festival. A snake boat is usually manned by four helmsmen, 25 singers and 100-125 oarsmen who row in unison to the fast rhythm of the vanchipattu (song of the boatman). Classical Arts The traditional of classical arts existed in Kerala for more than a thousand years. Kathakali: The spectacular dance drama of Kerala, Kathakali integrates dance, music, poetry and histrionics, Referred to as the ‘first theatre of imagination’ in the world, it combines both lasya (gentle, graceful dance) and thandava (powerful, energetic dance) elements. Mohiniyattom: The gracefully elegant classical dance form, Mohiniyattom is the dance of the enchantress and has lasya as the predominant element. : The Sanskrit theatre of Kerala, Koodiyattom is believed to have originated two millennia ago. This art form was declared by UNESCO as one among ‘the masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity’. Folk Arts: Kerala has a vast repertoire of folk performing arts, folk songs and folk drama that showcase man’s overpowering rapport with nature and his constant desire for communication with the unknown. Theyyam: One of the most outstanding folk . Theyyam has its origins in the northern parts of the State. The oldest ritual art form, there are about 45 different types of including the Theyyam where the dance walks on fire. Thira, Mudiyettu, Kaduvakali, Velakali, Kakkarissinatakam, Chavittunatakam, , Kolkali, , Bhadrakalipattu, Pulluvanpattu and Thiruvathirakali are some of the other folk art forms of Kerala. Martial Arts Kalaripayattu : The comprehensive system of martial arts of Kerala, Kalaripayattu is regarded as one of the oldest and most scientific in the world. Even Kung-fu is believed to have originated from it.
