ABSTRACT The central argument in this study is to compare James Welch'sWinter in the Blood with Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony. Specifically, the main characters, the narrator in Winter in the Blood and Tayo in Ceremony are experiencing a cultural identity crisis. The paper explores the crises that the narrator and Tayo undergo, and examines the possibility that the characters resolve their cultural identity crisesvia methods devised particularly for such a crisis by their cultures. It is further suggested that what is unique about these novels is that the narrator and Tayo modify these traditional methods to suit their personal needs and situations and the changing society. The conclusion suggests that the characters succeed in establishing their cultural identities, and that they do so precisely because of these methods that they develop. ACHIEVING CULTURAL IDENTITY IN WINTER IN THE BLOOD AND CEREMONY In his poem, "Blackfeet, Blood, and Piegan Hunters,11 James Welch writes, "Children need a myth that tells them to be alive"(Earthboy 36). The poem's line holds key significance in the motivations of the narrator in Welch'sWinter in the Blood, and to Tayo in Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony. The main conflict that the characters within the novels must tackle is their loss of cultural identity. Both Welch's narrator and Silko's Tayo had just begun to develop a knowledge of the values of their congenital cultures when they were ripped from their environments by events that create psychological crises in their lives: inWinter in the Blood, the narrator's father and brother, his closest male relatives, die, and in Ceremony, Tayo must participate in a war where he witnesses the death of his cousin. These major psychological events hurtle the characters into an alien culture that demands that they shed, and even revile, their native cultures. The myth that tells Tayo and the narrator to be alive—their sense of who they are—has been declared a myth by a dominant culture, and consequently these characters, at the opening of the respective novels, feel little need to live. The crises that Tayo and the narrator must resolve are not only general psychological crises but are also particularly devastating events in terms of their native cultures. This critical approach differs from the critical approach taken to date, critics have written about the respective cultures in the novels, or about the crises that the characters face; none have written about how these characters use their cultures to resolve their individual crises. Tayo is Laguna: the Laguna center their religion and society around the creation, perpetuation of life, and the feminine, and although death is an important part of that cycle, the Laguna have a horror of deliberate destruction. Laguna have never waged or taken part in war; as a culture it could be characterized as pacifist. Yet Tayo chooses to enter a war voluntarily in order to accompany his cousin. This entrance into war creates a crisis particular to his specific culture. The same is true for the 2* 3 narrator. The narrator believes, for most of the novel, that he is both Gros Ventre and Blackfeet, and later finds that he is wholly Blackfeet; the author tends to meld the two cultures within the text, probably because the author has both Gros Ventre and Blackfeet heritage, and because at the time that he wrote the novel, he had an equal amount of education in each culture. Further, Gros Ventre and Blackfeet cultures are quite similar: both are masculine and focused on athletics and bravery. For Blackfeet cultureand Gros Ventre culture, the death of a relative is probably the most devastating event an individual can face. The Blackfeet culture required a great deal of mourning, especially from a relative of the same sex. Walter McClintock, an amateur anthropologist who resided with the Blackfeet at the turn of the century, noted that "...extreme manifestations of [grief] were only shown by men towards men and not towards women" (150). Furthermore, in the past it was important for the Blackfeet to make a great show of grief for the dead, by taking such extreme actions as cutting off the first joint of their little fingers, cutting off their hair (which held far greater significance for the Blackfeet than it does for a white people), cutting their horses' manes and tails, gashing their legs and arms with knives and other sharp objects, etc. (McClintock 150-152). The narrator continues to live in numbing grief as he is left without any chance to achieve resolution for his brother's death in a cultural or personal sense, especially because of his degree of involvement with Mose's death. In order to resolve their main conflicts, and resume "normal" lives, the narrator and Tayo must develop some cultural identity. They could choose to develop a white or Native American- (Laguna for Tayo, Blackfeet for the narrator) oriented cultural identity, but their choice of a Native American-oriented identity is more empowering to their cultural development. However, it is even more important that they feel a part of the culture to which they choose to belong (whether they choose white or Native American cultures)— ie., they are not alienated. What is unique about these two novels—and what makes them so similar—is the approach of the main characters to managing their crises. When Tayo and the narrator finally choose to re-orient themselves within their native cultures, they follow patterns established by their respective ethnic groups for resolving a psychological crisis— but theymodify these traditional patterns for their modem, and specific personal, needs. This approach differs greatly from other Native American novels in which the main character simply returns to her or his native culture and leaves the white world behind. In Momaday’s House Made o f Dawn, for example, Abel returns to the reservation and leaves Los Angeles behind. At the novel’s close, he is running toward the dawn and singing a prayer from the Nightway, which is the dead center of Navajo culture. Michael Dorris and Louise Erdrich have written about characters in their fiction who have already successfully dealt with this integration problem, such as Vivian TwostarCrown in o f Columbus, or Ida George in A Yellow Raft in Blue Water. As Dorris observed in his essay on the progress of Native American literature, Native Americans are "by necessity culturally adaptive”; Tayo and the narrator must bridge that gap in the middle between the dominant white Euro-American culture and the traditional beliefs of their tribes that (in the novel at any rate) are largely stuck in the previous century or the beginning of the twentieth century (Dorris 156). Paula Gunn Allen said that in the recent past, Native Americans ofall tribes had to ”...somehow come to terms with a whole different technological universe. And that conflict means How do I keep my sense of what I am? If I am a Native American, how do I stay connected to my tradition, to my way of seeing the world? And...it’s a constant fight to keep in mind for yourself who you are" (Coltelli 13). If one extends Allen’s statement from dealing with a different technological universe to dealing with a different cultural universe, one has highlighted a part of the core of Tayo’s and the narrator’s psychological crisis. Malcolm McFee, an anthropologist who did fieldwork on the Montana Blackfeet reservation in the late fifties, sixties and early seventies of this century, focused his studies on defining the differences between what he referred to as "white-oriented” and "Indian- oriented” residents of the reservation. He also attempted to carefully identify the 5 characteristics of the individuals who belonged to the white-oriented or Indian-oriented group.

Patell The Native American novelists Leslie Marmon Silko and Sherman Alexie are two writers who ponder upon the predicament faced by all US minority cultures: how to transform themselves from marginalized cultures into emergent cultures capable of challenging and reforming the mainstream. My conception of cultural emergence here draws upon Raymond Williams’s analysis of the dynamics of modern culture, an analysis that has served as the foundation for minority discourse theory in the 1990s. Williams characterizes culture as a constant struggle for dominance in which a hegemonic mainstream— what Williams calls “the effective dominant culture” (121)—seeks to defuse the challenges posed by both residual and emergent cultural forms. According to Williams, residual culture consists of those practices that are based on the “residue of ... some previous social and cultural institution or formation,” but continue to play a role in the present (122), while emergent culture serves as the site or set of sites where “new meanings and values, new practices, new relationships and kinds of relationships are continually being created” (123). Both residual and emergent cultural forms can only be recognized and indeed conceived in relation to the dominant one: each represents a form of negotiation between the margin and the center over the right to control meanings, values, and practices. Both Silko and Alexie make use of a narrative strategy that has proven to be central to the project of producing emergent literature in late-twentieth-century America.

    Transmotion Vol 1, No 2 (2015) “Carried in the Arms of Standing Waves:” The Transmotional Aesthetics of Nora Marks Dauenhauer1 BILLY J. STRATTON In October 2012 Nora Marks Dauenhauer was selected for a two-year term as Alaska State Writer Laureate in recognition of her tireless efforts in preserving Tlingit language and culture, as well as her creative contributions to the state’s literary heritage. A widely anthologized author of stories, plays and poetry, Dauenhauer has published two books, The Droning Shaman (1988) and Life Woven With Song (2000). Despite these contributions to the ever-growing body of native American literary discourse her work has been overlooked by scholars of indigenous/native literature.2 The purpose of the present study is to bring attention to Dauenhauer’s significant efforts in promoting Tlingit peoplehood and cultural survivance through her writing, which also offers a unique example of transpacific discourse through its emphasis on sites of dynamic symmetry between Tlingit and Japanese Zen aesthetics. While Dauenhauer’s poesis is firmly grounded in Tlingit knowledge and experience, her creative work is also notable for the way it negotiates Tlingit cultural adaptation in response to colonial oppression and societal disruption through the inclusion of references to modern practices and technologies framed within an adaptive socio-historical context. Through literary interventions on topics such as land loss, environmental issues, and the social and political status of Tlingit people within the dominant Euro-American culture, as well as poems about specific family members, Dauenhauer merges the individual and the communal to highlight what the White Earth Nation of Anishinaabeg novelist, poet and philosopher, Gerald Vizenor, conceives as native cultural survivance.3 She demonstrates her commitment to “documenting Tlingit language and oral tradition” in her role as co-editor, along with her husband, Richard, of the acclaimed series: Classics of Tlingit Oral Literature (47).

    The Art of Hybridization-James Welch's Fools Crow Hans Bak University of Nijmegen Recent Native American fiction has yielded a particularly hybrid mode of realism, one fluid and flexible enough to accommodate elements from tribal lore and, in varying modes and degrees, an awareness of the epis- temological dilemmas of postmodernism. The injection of tribal ele- ments-shamanism, spirits, witchcraft, charms, love medicines-together with the use of a non-Western (cyclical rather than linear) concept of time, for example, help to account for the vaunted "magical" realism in the work of Louise Erdrich (Love Medicine and Tracks) or the radically subversive and unambiguously postmodernist revision of American history and Western myth in Gerald Vizenor's The Heirs of Columbus. As critics have recurrently suggested, Native American fiction which seeks to connect itself to the oral tradition of tribal narrative (as Vizenor in his use of trickster myths and the "stories in the blood") more natu- rally accommodates itself to a postmodernist approach to fiction than to a traditional realistic one.1 The oral tradition, then, might be seen as by nature antithetical to realism. As Paula Gunn Allen has also noted, for the contemporary Native writer loyalty to the oral tradition has been "a major force in Indian resistance" to the dominant culture.     ENGLISH 233 Tradition and Renewal in American Indian Literature COURSE DESCRIPTION English 233 is an introduction to North American Indian verbal art. This course is designed to satisfy the General Education literary studies ("FSLT") requirement. FSLT courses are supposed to concentrate on textual interpretation; they are supposed to prompt you to analyze how meaning is (or, at least, may be) constructed by verbal artists and their audiences. Such courses are also supposed to give significant attention to how texts are created and received, to the historical and cultural contexts in which they are created and received, and to the relationship of texts to one another. In this course you will be doing all these things as you study both oral and written texts representative of emerging Native American literary tradition. You will be introduced to three interrelated kinds of "text": oral texts (in the form of videotapes of live traditional storytelling performances), ethnographic texts (in the form of transcriptions of the sorts of verbal artistry covered above), and "literary" texts (poetry and novels) written by Native Americans within the past 30 years that derive much of their authority from oral tradition. The primary focus of the course will be on analyzing the ways that meaning gets constructed in these oral and print texts. Additionally, in order to remain consistent with the objectives of the FSLT requirement, you will be expected to pay attention to some other matters that these particular texts raise and/or illustrate. These other concerns include (a) the shaping influence of various cultural and historical contexts in which representative Native American works are embedded; (b) the various literary techniques Native American writers use to carry storyteller-audience intersubjectivity over into print texts; and (c) the role that language plays as a generative, reality-inducing force in Native American cultural traditions.

    Anglo women's perceptions of the nature of the South- west have already received considerable attention of scholars.6 Although Chicanas and Native American women have perhaps been writing about the Southwest for years, only recently has Just as nature can be perceived differently by men and their literature been included in the genre of western and nature women, ethnicity can create equally distinctive perceptions of writing and as a consequence, there is not as much scholarly the natural world. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre.
