Old St. Mary’s, now in its 186th year of faith and service to God’s people, and served April 18, 2021 by the Holy Spirit Fathers since 1893, extends a warm welcome to all! Third Sunday of

The themes linked in today’s Scripture readings encourage us to avoid sin by following the Lord’s directives, to repent, and to seek forgiveness. St. Peter, in the Acts of the Apostles, reminds the people, and us, of the evil of Christ’s passion and death, and that through repentance and conversion, our sins be wiped away. St. John, in his First Letter, tells us that Jesus is an offering for our sins. In St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus appears to His disciples after His Resurrection while two of them recount their encounter with Jesus on the road to Emmaus. They finally recognize Him in the breaking of the bread. The Church has long taught that partaking of the Eucharist strengthens us on our journey as Christ’s disciples. Likewise, participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the forgiveness of sins opens us to Christ’s grace, bringing us closer to Him, giving us peace in our lives. This week, go to confession and receive Holy Communion to draw into union with Christ.

Third Sunday of Easter A Reflection from the writings of Fr. Wayne Epperley, CSSp

Beloved, we have come to the glory of the Easter season having done so through the heart-rending drama of . We have come to a halo of light radiant through the scandal of a cross and a crown of thorns.. Christ inviting us to the sign of unity, the bond of charity, the symbol of peace and concord. Beloved, Calvary - albeit the most frightening mystery of Christ’s life - was only a momentary scandal… He takes anger, wrath, hate, sin, doubt and says forgive. It was necessary, proclaims St. Peter...necessary that Christ should suffer - Not for the despairs of the damned… Not the torments of Hell… But all the pains that were compatible with His Divine Sonship… Necessary, says our Lord, to prove to the world the immensity of His love and the purifying power of suffering. What odd and peculiar ways the Risen One has chosen to convince the world of the truth of His Resurrection: -secret appearances to small groups or individuals who were Old St. Mary’s later commissioned to tell the whole world what had happened; Served since 1893 by the Holy Spirit Fathers (Spiritans) -instructions given on a beach at a fish breakfast; 646 Monroe Avenue, Detroit, MI 48226-2935 -meeting downcast disciples on a lonely road; (313) 961-8711 -absorbing bitterness, grief, skepticism with patient FAX (313) 961-4994 understanding.
