Year 4 Topic Romans Week 1 and 2 Week 1 – The Roman Conquest of Britain

The Romans first invaded Britain in 43AD, they landed in and made their way up through the country. It was generally successful, with a few uprisings by Celtic tribes easily quashed.

However, when Boudicca of the tribe had her power and money taken from her when her husband died, she was outraged. In 60AD she led an uprising against the Romans. She travelled to Camulodunum (Colchester), where her army conquered the area and destroyed a Roman Temple. Boudicca was said to ride into battle on a chariot, calling tribal chants and striking fear to those who encountered her.

She then headed to (), however the Roman Goveneror of Britain Suetonius arrived before she did. He realised he couldn’t defend the city and ordered that the occupants evacuated. When Boudicca and her army arrived they burnt it to the ground and killed anyone who couldn’t get away.

They then continued their assult north to (St. Albans), where they prepared to do the same as in London. However this time Suetonius had gathered his army and prepared them for battle. This is when the Battling of Watling happened.

Now, the Battle of Watling Street wasn’t on a street, we think it was somewhere near London and facing towards Wales. The Romans built the road and called it Watling Street before the battle.

There were 80,000 Celts vs. 400 Romans, however the Celts were poorly equipped and the Romans used their advanced battle tactics to swiftly and quickly defeat the army. However, Boudicca was thought to have seen the loss and poisoned herself, so that she wouldn’t have died at the hands of the Romans. Your Task Using the information above, draw a picture of the Roman army vs. the 80,000 Celts. Use these images of the Romans and Celts to help you.
