6 Preface By The Coordinating Board for Higher Education

The Coordinating Board for Higher Education invites Missouri's high school students to review the information presented in this 1998 listing of Advanced Placement acceptance policies and accept the challenge of participating in the Advanced Placement program while in high school. Students who take Advanced Placement courses develop high academic expectations and derive increased satisfaction from challenging coursework. The completion of Advanced Placement courses inspires a sense of achievement that serves students well in college and at work. Finally, Advanced Placement courses set a challenging standard for excellence in teaching and learning in the high schools where they are offered. As a consequence, the Coordinating Board for Higher Education promotes Advanced Placement courses in high school as one means for strengthening students' preparation for college as well as the demands placed upon high school graduates who enter the work force directly out of high school.

All Missouri colleges and universities were provided the opportunity to revise their Advanced Placement policies. This publication reflects the most current institutional policies regarding Advanced Placement. While every effort has been made to present the most current information, it is always a good practice to contact the institution with any questions that may arise upon review of the Advanced Placement acceptance policies contained in this report.

The Coordinating Board for Higher Education expresses its sincere appreciation to the campus officials who assisted in the development of this document. It is the board's sincere hope that this publication will be of assistance to students, parents, high school counselors, and those Advanced Placement course teachers who are dedicated to preparing Missouri's high school students for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

The Coordinating Board of Higher Education also wishes to thank the Advanced Placement Directors, Dr. Janette Ralston, Truman State University in Kirksville, and Dr. Sterling Cossaboom, Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Their help in compiling this information is greatly appreciated. For information concerning AP Teacher Development Institutes, contact Dr. Ralston at 1-660-785-5396 or Dr. Cossaboom at 1-573-986-6179.

7 Acknowledgement By Robert McDonough, Director Academic Services, The College Board / Midwest

On behalf of The College Board, allow me to congratulate thestate of Missouri and its Coordinating Board for Higher Education for their many effortsto broaden access for Missouri students to the Advanced Placement Program. Overcominga lack of student awareness of the AP Program and its benefits is critically important to thesuccess of any such effort, and this publication of the collegiate AP policies in the state isa major contribution to overcoming that struggle. Indeed, all students should know that successful AP candidatescan receive baccalaure- ate credit for their achievements at an overwhelming majority of colleges and universities inthe United States and in a growing number of institutions located in other countries.

Equally important to an enhanced awareness of the AP Program is the availabilityof high quality professional development opportunities for secondary school faculty willingto deliver the AP courses. Missouri and the Coordinating Board for HigherEducation must be congratulated again for creating AP teacher developmentcenters at both Southeast Missouri State and Truman State universities. As a result, teachers from throughout thestate will be able to take advantage of twenty-five financially subsidized AP teacher trainingcourses in the sum- mer of 1998. This activity, along with many others, is being directed by Dr. Janette Ralston of Truman State and Dr. Sterling Cossaboom of Southeast. A special word ofgratitude goes to Dr. Ralston for her work in gathering the AP policy data for this booklet.

Finally, to further assist the Missouri AP initiative, The College Board hascreated the Missouri Advanced Placement Advisory Council. The council will assist The CollegeBoard in its effort to tailor AP Program services to the needs of Missouri students and teachers. The councilis chaired by the former Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. CharlesMcClain. Thus far, others who have accepted membership on the new councilare: Margaret Bahe, John Burroughs High School; Tom Becvar, High School; MaridellaCarter, Blue Springs South High School; Dr. Sterling Cossaboom, Southeast Missouri StateUniversity; Dr. Edwin Hiss, Washington University; Gary Kamper, Mary Institute and St. LouisCountry Day School; Hank Landry, David H.
