Trabalhar para o estudo e conservação das aves e seus habitats, promovendo um desenvolvimento que garanta a viabilidade do património natural para usufruto das gerações futuras. The classical debate on the convenience or not of the PNV concept has been recently revived in the Canary Islands, where pollen records of pre-anthropic vegetation seemed to strongly disagree with the existing PNV reconstructions. Contrastingly, more recent PNV model outputs from the Azores Islands show outstanding parallelisms with pre-anthropic pollen records, at least in qualitative terms. We suggest the development of more detailed quantitative studies to compare these methodologies as an opportunity for improving the performance of both. PNV modelling may benefit by incorporating empirical data on past vegetation useful for calibration and validation purposes, whereas palynology may improve past reconstructions by minimizing interpretative biases linked to differential pollen production, dispersal and preservation. Espécies da Directiva Habitats 140/99 Diário da Republica Anexo II Picconia azorica Tutin Knobl Picconia azorica (Tutin) Knobl. Notelaea azorica Tut., Notelaea excelsa Ait., Picconia excelsa auct. fl. azor e Olea excelsa (PALHINHA, 1966). Picconia excelsa DC. (SEUBERT, 1844). Pau-branco (PALHINHA, 1966). Esta espécie foi referida pela primeira vez para as ilhas do Pico e S. Miguel por SEUBERT (1844), tendo sido então designado como Picconia excelsa DC. Foi então considerada igual à Picconia excelsa (Ait.) DC. da Madeira e Canárias, sendo mais tarde é revista por Tutin e aceite como uma nova entidade botânica para os Açores, com a denominação Picconia azorica (Tutin) Knobl., Notizbl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 11: 1028 (1934) (PALHINHA, 1966). Na historia nomenclatural desta espécie existem ainda designações como Notelaea azorica Tut (TUTIN, 1933 in PALHINHA, 1966), bem com Notelaea excelsa Ait., Picconia excelsa auct. fl. azor. e Olea excelsa (PALHINHA, 1966). Em termos ecológicos é caracterizada como preferindo habitat entre os 300 a 600 m (PALHINHA, 1966) com referências de FRANCO (1984) à sua existência a altitudes que rondam os 700 m. TUTIN (1964) refere que a P. azorica é uma espécie rara que ocupa o estrato arbóreo da Floresta de Louro. Embora existam alguns estudos pontuais acerca da sua ecologia, as preferências ambientais e altitudinais desta planta estão ainda por definir (SJÖGREN, 1973). Distribuição Açores: S. Maria, S. Miguel, Terceira, S. Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores e Corvo. Corologia Planta endémica dos Açores. Location Mediterranean Basin, Black Sea and Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands). Methods We analysed plastid DNA (cpDNA) sequence (trnK–matK, trnD–trnT) variation in 57 populations of Laurus and three Lauraceae genera. Phylogenetic methods (maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference) and statistical parsimony networks were used to reconstruct relationships among haplotypes. These results were contrasted with the fossil record and bioclimatic niche-based model predictions of past distributions to infer the migration routes and location of refugia. Results The phylogenetic tree revealed monophyly for Laurus. Overall sequence variability was low within Laurus, but six different haplotypes were distinguished and a single network retrieved, portraying three lineages primarily related to geography. -

Como el olivo era señal de paz el laurel era señal de victoria. Different anatomical and physiological parameters were determined in leaves of three tree species of a laurel forest in which the dominant trees were Laurus azorica (Seub.) Franco, Persea indica (L.) Spreng. and Myrica faya Ait. Samples were taken at different layers from the top down to the lower part of the canopy. The specific leaf weight, leaf thickness, and water potential (in absolute values) decreased down through the canopy and also the chlorophyll content expressed by unit leaf area, on the contrary the leaf area increased. -
