First run in 2006, the popular event raises money to support Gisborne individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. As well as racing and the chance to bet, there will be food and drink, an auction and prizes donated by local businesses. Fancy dress is encouraged. In past years, the day has attracted over 1000 people and raised over $50,000. “Every person diagnosed with breast cancer in the region gets one of our packs full of information, vouchers and books worth about $900,” said co-organiser Derry Stovell. In Tairawhiti, there is on average between 40 and 50 new breast cancer diagnoses each year, meaning the group has to raise around $50,000 to cover the cost of the gift packs. Registered nurse Anne Quinn, who works in the Gisborne Hospital medical day unit treating those with breast cancer, sees how important these packages are.
