BBC Radio Search for a Star Competition

Terms and Conditions

1. The BBC‟s code of conduct for competitions applies to this competition. You can read more about it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/guidelines/editorialguidelines/page/guidelines-appendices- appendix-2-competitions

2. This competition is open to individuals in the , the UK and the Isle of Man, except BBC employees or those of its affiliates and their close relatives or any person connected to the competition. Proof of age, identity and eligibility may be required.

3. Entrants must create an audio demo and submit to the BBC as an MP3 file or post online and provide a valid and active URL to the BBC to access the entry. The audio demo should follow the brief provided by BBC Radio Jersey.

4. The competition launches on Thursday 15th March 2012. Entries received before this date will not be considered.

5. Entries must be submitted via the following methods.

 By email to radiojersey@.co.uk. Please include your full name and remember to attach the MP3 file. The BBC will use the email address the message is sent from as contact information.

 By posting the medium containing the file to Search for a Star, BBC Radio Jersey, 18 & 21 Parade Road, St Helier, Jersey JE2 3PL. Please include your full name and a valid email address for contact purposes with your file.

 By uploading your demo to an online resource which can be accessed by the BBC using the web. Please email the URL to [email protected] and include your full name in the body of your email. The BBC will use the email address the message is sent from as contact information.

It is the entrant‟s responsibility to ensure that the file can be played from the medium provided and that, if posted online, the URL remains a valid method of accessing the entry for the whole period of the competition. If the BBC cannot play the file after reasonable attempts, the entry will be disqualified.

6. The BBC will only use personal details for the purposes of administering this competition. The BBC will only keep your personal details for as long as is necessary to fulfil these purposes. Please see the BBC‟s Privacy Policy.

7. Entrants submitting by „posting online‟ and providing the URL should be aware that their name and any other personal details they provide in the audio demo itself may be accessible to the general public if the online service being used allows uploaded files to be available to the general public.

7. The entry window closes at 2359 on 14th April 2012. Entries received after this time will not be considered, so please do not wait until the last minute to upload or send in your entry. Entries will not be returned so please remember to keep a copy.

8. Only one entry per individual is permitted. Entries must be no longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds in length in total when played.

9. Entries must be completely original and entirely the entrants own work. Entrants must be responsible for all of the creative ideas. Entries must not infringe any third party rights, including but not limited to, copyright and related rights. The entrants must take care that such use complies with the Terms of Use for that particular service.

10. Entries must not contain copyright music. Entries containing music will be disqualified. Entries must be in English. Entries not in English will be disqualified.

11. Entries must not contain defamatory, obscene, offensive or any other unsuitable material. Any such entries will be disqualified. Entries must be suitable to be broadcast by the BBC to audiences of all ages.

12. If the entry features any people other than the entrant, they should be aware they were being recorded and permission should be obtained from all involved for the entry to be submitted in the competition (or their parents/guardians if under 16).

13. The BBC accepts no liability if entrants ignore these terms and entrants agree to indemnify fully the BBC against any claims by any third party arising from any breach of these terms.

14. Entrants retain the copyright in their entry but grant to the BBC a non-exclusive licence to broadcast the entry across all media including any online platforms and use on bbc.co.uk

15. Entrants permit the BBC to edit or change entries in any way it may in its sole discretion consider necessary for the purposes of use in the competition and the broadcasting thereof.

16. By entering the competition, entrants warrant that they have legal capacity to enter the competition and agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

17. Entrants under 16 must seek approval from a parent or guardian as a condition of entry. If, after making reasonable attempts, the BBC cannot confirm with the parent or guardian that consent has been granted the entry will be disqualified.

18. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

a) How compelling the demo is, b) How interesting the demo is, and c) Entertainment value.

19. Entries will be judged through the following process:

a) A panel consisting of a senior BBC Radio Jersey executive, a member of the local press and a live events expert will judge all valid entries and compile a shortlist of up to 10of the best entries using the criteria above. b) The shortlisted entrants will make an “interview show” in the studio with assistance from a BBC Radio Jersey producer. These will be no longer than 5 minutes in length and may from part of future BBC programming. The same judging panel will decide a winner from these using the criteria above.

20. If an entrant cannot be contacted at any stage after reasonable attempts have been made to do so, the BBC reserves the right to disqualify that entrant and move onto the next best entrant.

21. If a shortlisted entrant cannot make the studio on the dates provided, reasonable attempts will be made to reschedule. If, after reasonable attempts, a suitable date or studio location cannot be found, the progress of that entrant in the competition will end and the BBC will move onto the next best entry.

22. The BBC producer provided for the “interview shows” will offer technical experience and assistance only. The shortlisted entrant will be creatively responsible for the show.

23. For the avoidance of doubt it is in the BBC‟s sole discretion to offer expenses, travel or accommodation for the shortlisted entrants in regards to the making of the “interview shows” or record the prize show. If it is agreed to cover such costs the BBC will arrange and pay directly.

24. The winner will get to present their own radio show (no more than 55 minutes), which the BBC hopes to broadcast but cannot guarantee to do so.

25. Entrants must agree to take part in any post-competition publicity if required.

26. The BBC‟s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted.

27. The BBC reserves the right to disqualify any entry which breaches any of these Terms and Conditions or to withhold or withdraw a prize if in its opinion entries do not reach the required standard.

28. The BBC reserves the right to cancel this competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside its control.

29. The BBC reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions at any stage, including changing or substituting the prize.

30. The BBC, its sub-contractors, subsidiaries and/or agencies cannot accept any responsibility whatsoever for any technical failure or malfunction or any other problem with any server, Internet access, system or otherwise which may result in any entry being lost or not properly registered or recorded. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.

31. These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
