I credit my life, my son, Article in Lawton Living Magazine gifts, skills, by Elizabeth York | photos by Memories Ink Photography & Graphic Design knowledge and abilities to God.” Former Sgt. Una “Lisa” Williams emerged from being an orphan to - Lisa Williams serving the underprivileged. Her time in the U.S. Army was only the beginning of fulfilling her life calling. At age 6, Una “Lisa” Williams became an orphan. She had never known her biological father, and tragically, her mother was murdered by an ex -intimate partner. Her aunts, Marjorie and Genevieve, each took in Williams and her two sisters. She credits them for keeping the family together. Wil- liams went to live with her Aunt Genevieve in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. Although her time with her mother was short, Williams gained strength from her memories of a mother who worked hard and who believed the best of her three daughters. Even as a youth, she remembers developing an early interest in helping other children and young adults to reach their potential. “I always just wanted to be able to help people and help them get what they needed,” she said. After graduating from high school in 1987, Williams moved to New Orleans, where she worked jobs including a cashier, housecleaner, babysitter and secretary. Following her interest in law enforcement, she earned a Private Investigator & Security Guard Certification through Rutledge College; she also completed secretarial training courses. When her son, Matthew, was born in 1990, Williams continued to work several jobs in order to make ends meet. By 1993, Williams decided that joining the U.S. Army was the best option to provide for Matthew. “My main focus was making a better life for my son and myself,” she said. She enlisted and was sent for active duty basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Then, she went to Fort Lee, Virginia, where she completed Advanced Individual Training (AIT) as a petroleum supply specialist. The decision to join the military was not without sacrifice. As a soldier and a single parent, Williams was required to release temporary custody of her son; he went to stay with his godmother. Things went well for a few months, until Williams received a call letting her know that the caregiver’s health no longer allowed her to care for Matthew. “I knew I might have to leave the military. I was very distraught,” Williams said. “I remember standing in formation crying. When I set a goal, I want to complete that goal. I just thought, ‘I can’t go back to that life I had before.’” Mercifully, a drill sergeant inquired about Williams’ predicament and allowed her to go home temporarily. “He believed in me and gave me that opportunity. He put his career on the line,” Williams said. “To this day, I appreciate what he did.” “It’s important that we as women veterans continue to have the camaraderie and keep our history alive. We call each other ‘warrior sisters,’” she said. The group is currently working on a project to help veterans with needed items. “We serve veterans and families in many capacities,” she said. For her contributions, Williams was named the 2017 Oklahoma Woman Veteran of the Year. In front of her peers, Williams was humbled to receive the designation. “When my name was called, I was shaking and crying,” she said. “People know what I’m doing is from the heart. When I see that I’m helping with the needs of others, it gives me joy.” When she’s not volunteering with the organization and in numerous other capacities, Williams is involved in youth outreach, giving teens and young adults a forum to share their hearts’ desires, voice their challenges and be encouraged to pursue goals. Wil- liams has co-authored two books dedicated to women. Her first book as author, “Predestined to Soar: Rise to See Who You Were Meant to Be,” releases in March 2018. Margo DeGange, founder of Women of Splendor Ministries, said, “Una Lisa Williams is one of those unique individuals who lives with a sense of purpose every single day. I’m honored to be her mentor, coach and colleague. You cannot separate who she is as a person from the life work that she does.” Williams won’t be slowing down anytime soon in pursuing her life’s passions. “The support and encouragement from my fam- ily, friends, and my own history, assisted in keeping me strong and dedicated,” she said. “I’m grateful for the people who came in my path who helped me to get where I am. I credit my life, my son, gifts, skills, knowledge and abilities to God. I know I couldn’t do it by myself; I’m very grateful.” To learn more about the Oklahoma Women Veterans Organization, visit Okwvo.org. 3 The Docket Summer 2018 Issue Attention Chapters .
