Crawfords of Adams County, Ohio CRAWFORDS OF ADAMS COUNTY, OHIO Compiled by H. MARJORIE CRAWFORD, Ph.D. Professor of Chemist,-, Vassar Collete POUGHKEEPSIE NEW YORK 1943 Litboprlnte-d in U.S.A. EDWARDS BROTHERS, INC. ANN AllBOR., MICHIGAN CRA1/FORDS OF ADAMS COUNTY, OHIO 1 PREFACE The Crawfords of our family have been assigned numoers from 1 to 360. Each number represents one per son only. The number above and to the right of the name represents the generation to which that person be longs. Thus, l Samue1 1 means that this is the first Crawford about whom we have any information, so he is the first one described and belongs to the first gener ation. He had one son who is therefore in the second generation and is the second person listed-- 2 Roberta. 2 Robert had nine children who would constitute the third generation. They are listed under the descrip• tion of 2 Robert as follows: + 3 i Samuel + 4 ii Fanny + 5 iii Margaret + 6 iT Andrew + 7 V John + 8 vi Elizabeth + 9 vii Nancy + 10 viii Mattie + ll ix Robert The Ro.man numerals give the order of the children in the family. The + means that this person will be described later under his own consecutive number. If ii CRAWFORDS OF ADAMS COUUTY, OHIO one wanted to look up the family of 5 Margaret it would be found under the nwnber 5 in the descriptive section, third generation. Or, if one looked in the index for 5 :Margaret, he would be referred to page 13. In the description on page 13 would be found 5 MARGARET 8 ("Peggy~)(2 Robert) followed by a descrip tion of her and her family. The name in quotations is a nickname and the (2 Robert) means that she was a dau ghter of 2 Robert. The little three, 3 , above and to the right of the name, means that she belonged to the third generation of the known members of our family. The Index contains the names of all the Crawfords found in this book and the names of the men and women whom they married. ~hen a person is usually called by the middle name, they are indexed in that way with the first name in parentheses. For example, you will find (Helen) Marjorie Crawford in the Ms under the general name of Crawford. Crawfords not of this family and those who married them are listed alphabetically with a page reference. Crawfords of our family are listed alphabetically with their consecutive numbers and the page reference to the .main description of them. If one wanted to know about the brothers and sisters of my father, Dr. T. c. Crawford, the index lists CRAWFORDS OF ADA.~ COUNTY, OHIO iii CRAWFORD 268 Treber6 89 342 Treber,Jr.7 89 145 Treber Cole::nan5 67 259 Treber Shelton6 87 Looking on page 67 one would see that 145 Treber Cole man Crawford was the son of 54 Robert Crawford, and looking back in the fourth generation under 54 one would find a list of all the children of 54 Robert Crawford. Those who married Crawfords of our fainily are list ed alphabetically. The number following their name is the consecutive number of the Crawford who~ they mar ried. The page reference will locate them and their family. If one knew that Stella Treber had married a Crawford, but did not know his n8.Jlle, the index would give Treber, Stella.(145) 67 Either the page reference or the consecutive nwnber 145 would locate her and her fa.Jiily. The index does not contain the na.mes of people whose .mother's inaiden na.m.e was Crawford. To find Patricia Jean S1nith, one would have to look in the index for either her father, Frank Kilton S~ith(283), or her mother, 283 (Barbara) Ruth Crawford. An outline of the descendants of a certain Robert Mcclung is also included (pages 95, 96 and 97) since so many of them JJS.rried into our fa,oily. 1 Samuel Crawford 2 Roberti Crawford I I I I I 3 Samuel 4 Fann 6 Andrew 5 Margaret 7 Joe 8 Elizabeth 11 Robert 9 Na.he 10 Mattie (') i i s::u 12 Robert 29 Mary Ann 307 Mary 51 AndrewJ 0 13 Margaret 31 Samuel 52 William El 14 .Tohn 32 George 53 Mary Ann t.O 15 0 Andrew 33 Robert 54 Robert "'il 16 Samuel 34 John 55 Samuel 17 .Ta.mes 35 Jane 56 .Tohn 18 Mary Ann 36 Andrew 57 Edward 37 Ann Eliza 58 Margaret 38 Margaret 39 William 40 Koble 19 Lizzie Walker 23 John McFeeters 41 Ann Fle:nming 47 Eliza Noble 20 Francis Walker 24 Eliza !IcFeeters 0 42 Eliza Fle:nming 48 Ann Mable ti= 21 Fanny Walker 25 Christine ~cFeeters H 49 Jane Noble 0 22 Anna '?Talker 26 Robert McFeeters 50 Matilda Noble 27 Ann ~n:cFeeters 43 James Lindsay 28 Sa,nuel McFeeters 44 Robert Lindsay 45 .Tohn Lindsay 46 Willib...n Lindsay CRAWFORDS OF ADAMS COUNTY. OHIO 1 INTRODUCTION These data have been collected from old Bibles, from old newspapers, and from many friends and r~latives who have filled out questionnaires and have written to me about their particular branch of the family. This history was started with the idea of untang ling the complicated relationships in my own branch of ths family, and has grown to include as many birth, mar riage and death dates as it has been possible -to collect. In later generations no attempt has been made to give any information beyond the dates and relationships. In general, no attempt has been made to record, beyond one generation, the descendants of ths women who gave up the Orawfora name by marrying. The exceptions are in the third generation where several children and grandchild ren of 5 Margaret, 8 Elizabeth, 9 Nancy and 10 Mattie married back into the Crawford family. An outline of the descendants of a certain Robert Mcclung is also in cluded since many of them married into our family. For any one who is interestad in genealogy and whose mother or grandmother was of this Crawford family, the rela tionships will be recorded here and the later data on their own family will be fairly readily availab:e. There are at present descendants of four separate Crawford families living in Adams.County, Ohio. Perhaps 2 CRAWFORDS OF ADA!lS COUXTY, OHIO they could all be connected throubh one original ances tor if we were able to trace them back through England and Ireland to their original home in Scotland. The na:ne Crawford is of Scottish origin and is said to mean a "bloody ~rossing" as the early Crawfords were a warlike clan. The first of these four Crawford families ca.me from Green Co. Pennsylvania sometime between 1770 and 1781 and settled on Brush Creek in Ada.ms Co. Ohio. The will of Oliver Crawford was filed in Brown Co.Ohio in 1818. Oliver and Jane Crawford had nine children, some of whom went to Warren Co., some to Brown Co. and some to Darke Co. Ohio. Two daughters, Esther and Ann, stay ed in Adams County and married brothers, Thomas and Samuel Thoroman. Many of their descendants still live in Adams County, Ohio. The second group ca.ne sometime after the Revolu tionary ~ar. John Crawford, the only son of the Colonel William Crawford who was burned at the stake by the Indians in Sandusky Co. Ohio in 1782, was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary Ar,ny. After the war, he sold the f'3.!llily farm in Fayette co. Pennsylvania and settled on Iron Ridge, overlooking the Ohio River at the ~outh of Brush Creek in Adams Co., Ohio. He died in 181b, leav ing five children; George ·::ashington Crawford, William Crawford, Richard ,1ason '.;rawford, Mary Crawford CRAWFORDS OF ADAMS COUNTY,OHIO 3 Cummings and Sarah Crawford Rowland. Early records of Adams County mention Moses Crawford as a son of John crawford of Iron Ridge. This might be a misprint for Mason or there might have been a sixth child who died or moved away. George Washington Crawford had a son, George Washington Crawford who was born in 1839 and died in 1927. Many of his descendants still live in the Man chester, Ohio neighborhood. The third group of Crawfords came originally from England. Rev. William Crawford was the pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church in West Union, Ohio from 1828 to 1830 and in Winchester, Ohio in 1832. He married Mary Fenton and they had one son, Harper, and five dau ghters, Sarah Crawford Bayless, Jane Crawford Woodrow, Nan Crawford Collins, _Crawford Burwell and Eliza beth Crawford Bayless. A partial outline of the descen dants of Harper Crawford follows: Harper Crawford,b. Jan.28,1814,d.Oct.5,1865 married Aquilla Jane "Willson,b.Nov.22,1821,d.May 29, 1889 1 2 Williams. Histories of County Limerick HISTORY OF LIMERICK – 1824 LIMERICK Is an extensive, populous city, and seaport, situated on the Eastern bank of the river Shannon, distant 94 miles south west from Dublin, 50 miles from Cork, 36 from Waterford and 50 from Tralee. It is traditionally supposed to have been built by Yuorus in the year 155, and was anciently much frequented by foreign merchants; and after the arrival of the Danes, in the year 855, these enterprising people considerably improved its commerce. The English took possession of Limerick in the year 1174, and, as a proof of the early importance of the city, in the year 1197, and in the ninth year of the reign of King Richard, he granted a charter to the citizens to elect a mayor, which honor was not obtained by the citizens of London till ten years after that period; nor had Dublin and Cork a mayor till the 13th century. This city was originally walled, and, deemed the strongest fortress in this kingdom, besides having the advantage of not being commanded by adjacent heights, and it has sustained some memorable sieges. In the year 1690 King William brought his forces against it, but withdrew them without accomplishing its reduction; in the following year it was again invested by General Ginckle, who, after an obstinate resistance, compelled the garrison to surrender, on honourable terms of capitulation.

She died in 1711 in Coghlanstown, Kildare, Ireland. Notes for William Winnett: William Winnett was probably living in Dublin in 1680 as that is where his son John was born. By 1691 he was at Kilrush, co. Kildare. At this time he leased the lands of Coghlanstown from Sir Robert Colville, for 21 years. He seems to have stayed on, as he was referred to as "of Coghlanstown" at his death. The administration of his will names his son John, and John Nevill of Great Furnace as creditors. William Winnett and Elizabeth had the following children: i. THOMAS2 WINNETT was born about 1675 in Ireland. Notes for Thomas Winnett: The existence of Thomas is surmised. John Winnett is called the second son in documents. It is likely that William Winnett's father was Thomas. 2. ii. JOHN WINNETT was born in 1680 in Dublin, Ireland. He died about 1758 in Ireland. Brendan is considered to be the first Irish visitor to North America. He was born in Ireland around 489. Some say he was born near Tralee; others say he was born near Killarney. St. Brendan became a Smonk. In the 6th century, many Irish monks were traveling to Europe to establish monasteries as centers of study. They traveled also to lonely islands where they could live close to nature. Legend tells us that St. Brendan and 17 companions left Ireland in an open, leather-covered boat for a voyage of seven years in the North Atlantic, looking for a promised land. It brought them to strange, new lands where they had marvelous adventures. RESOURCES HANDOUTS St. Brendan’s Voyage St. Brendan and His Companions Tim Severin Recreating the Voyage of St.

Custom Report for James Horen Horan and Ellen Aylward Jan 1790 Name: James Horen Horan Birth: Jan 1790 in Ireland Marriage: Abt. 1835 in Ireland Death: 14 Dec 1853 in Carltom, MI Person Notes: James HORAN James Horen (Horan) 1790-1853 James married Ellen Aylward (1815-1877) in Ireland on or before 1835. He was about 45 years old and Ellen was about 20 years old. They had one son in Ireland on January 8, 1836, John. There is no real data where James and Ellen came from in Ireland. All we have are clues. On NO documents, including Naturalization papers, census, Civil War enlistments or Gravestones does it ever show an Ireland location. In St.Patricks Cemetery in Michigan almost all other Irish gravestones show a county. The possibilities are: A. Aylwards are concentrated in Waterford and Kilkinney B. The farm next to James' were the Dunns. They were from South Meath and Kings Counties. C. Many of James' other neighbors were from Albilone. D. Galway, Cork, and Wexford counties because O'Horans were there E. Thomas, son of James, wanted to marry the daughter of Michael Mahoney and Nancy O'Hara. The neighbors of James and Ellen. However she was already married so he sent away to Ireland for Michael's and Nancy's other daughter. Thomas then married Mary Mahoney. So James may have come from the same county as the Mahoney's. They came to the United States between February,1836 and July 1839. John being born in Ireland on January 8,1836 and James Jr.
