Getting inked creates your own body of work

text by CATHLEEN COLE attoos aren’t just forbikers, gangsters and rebels anymore. Business professionals, doctors, lawyers, teachers –they’re all among the people getting inked. AHarris Poll published in February 2012 showed that one in fiveU.S.adults has at least Tone tattoo. That means if youdon’t have one, youknowsomeone whodoes –evenifheorshe keeps it well hidden. There’savast bodyofwork out there, and every picturetells astory. Apersonalart collection Cheri Mitchell has a“vest”–continuous tattoos around her torso and shoulders. She started small, but “getting tat-

toos is very addictive,” she contends. LACiE GrANT yby Tattoos often have ameaning behind them. “Ask someone about their tattoo and you’ll get astory,” Cheri, whoowns Ink –ACreative Studio in Beaumont and Port Arthur, said. Tattoos used to be taboo among members of mainstream photograph

32 November 2013 | theVIPmag.com society, but that’s changed. “It’s more sociallyaccepted now,”Cheri said. “People aremoretolerant.”But she ad- mits there’sstill some prejudice. “It’s all about perception,”she explains, adding that manyintelligent, success- ful people sporttattoos. “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Tattoos areart that Cheri puts on her bodyinstead of her walls, she confirmed. “It is adornment,”she said. “This is my wayofexpressing myself artisticallyinapermanent way.” Aubrey Trevino agrees with Cheri that getting tattooed is addicting. She’s co-owner of Tattoos by Mundo in Beaumont with husband Mundo Tre- vino, and about 75 percent of her body is inked. “I’dalways been interested in tattoos,”Aubrey remembered. “They were beautiful to me.” At first she had her tattoos applied in areas that were easilycovered by clothing, but theysoon migrated down her arms and legs. Her bodyart is like jewelry to her.“That’s exactlywhat it is,”she said. “I’ve invested in it.” Aubrey admits that her original tattoo at 18 wasanact of rebellion. “Atfirst it wastoberebellious and daring,”she admitted. But once she started working forMundo and the twomarried, she became entrenched in the industry. She transformed into aposter girl forher business, literally. “It became my lifestyle,”she observed. Although much of the reaction to her tattoos is positive,Aubrey acknowledges that she gets some ugly stares and snide remarks from strang- ers once in awhile. To those people whohavejudged her without know- ing her,she smiles and says, “Have a blessed day.” Getting inked ForMundo, aprofessional tattoo artist foralmost 20 years, professional- ism and cleanliness arethe main fac- tors in his business. “There’salot to learn to stayclean and proficient with the basics,”hesaid. People thinking about getting atat- too should ask to see the tattoo artist’s license and portfolio,Mundo advises. Theyshould also ask if the artist has safety training in first aid and CPR. Cleanliness and sterile tools and equipment areamust. Mundo uses pre-sterilized instruments in sterilized packages and uses an autoclave to ster- ilize other instruments and equipment. He wears surgical glovesand agauze mask over his nose and mouth when he’sworking. If atattoo studio doesn’t followsterile practices, walk out, he recommends. The tattoo artist has alot of repeat customers including doctors and busi- ness professionals. Women make up the majority of his clientele. He’svery careful with first-timers and makes suretheyare making the right >> theVIPmag.com |November 2013 33 decision about their choice of tattoo or whether to get tattooed at all. “We spend alot of time talking people out of tattoos,”henoted. And he abso- lutelyrefuses to tattoo anyone who appears intoxicated. Placement is key Currently, phrases across the rib cage arepopular among women –mot- tos, song lyrics, Bible verses. Portraits of special people areinstyle too. As to wherepeople prefer to get tattooed, men like to get their arms, chests, shoulders and backs worked on. Women like to get tattooed on their rib cages, pelvises and feet. “Ba- sicallyanywherethat theydeem femi- nine,”Mundo said. He warns people to be careful about choosing an area of the bodythat might change, such as awoman’s breasts and abdomen during pregnancy.“Of course, that’s a personal choice,”hesaid. Design, size, detail, color and place- ment areall factors of consideration in pricing. Atattoo can be priced by the hour or by the piece. Mundo charges $100 to $120 an hour depending on the design, and for$40 youcan get a2-inch by 2-inch design. “Weask people, ‘What’s your budget?’” Mundo explained, adding that youcould opt forsession work over aperiod of weeks that lets youpay as yougo. That allows youtoget the design youreally want, rather than settling forsome- thing just because it’s less expensive. The pigments used in tattoos are iron oxide or plastic polymers. “They aresafe,”Mundo said, but warns that some people aresensitive to them, especiallyred pigments. He interviews people whodon’t have tattoos about skin sensitivity and allergies. He’ll do askin test to see howapotential client reacts to the pigments. Amulti-color,2-inch by 2-inch tattoo takes about 20 to 30 minutes to apply, but the session can take 45 minutes to an hour forthe prepara- tion time. On ascale of one to 10 with 10 being the most painful, the tattoo artist says the pain levelisabout a fiveorasix. “Women have ahigher tolerance forpain,”hesaid. Aubrey agrees. “Men arethe first ones to hit the floor,” she remarked with agrin. It’s gotten better,Mundo contends. Techniques forapplying tattoos have become moreadvanced and numbing creams and sprays lessen the pain. The reasons people get tattooed arenumerous. Forsome, it’s to mark acertain period in their life–turning 18, getting married, celebrating an anniversary, marking an accomplish- ment. Sometimes atattoo is just for the sake of adornment. And some- times atattoo is atribute to someone special, perhaps someone whopassed away.“Forsome people,”Mundo said, “it’s ahealing process.”

ou were young. Youwerewild. Yougot atattoo. Now you’re older, less wild and asking yourself,“What wasIthinking?” If that tat has to go,laser removalisthe answer. Julie Broussard, afamilynurse practitioner and owner of Skinologie Medical Spa and Laser Center in Beaumont, says thereare several reasons whyclients choose to Yhave tattoos removed. Manypeople got tattoos when theywereyounger and theyjust don’t like them anymore–whether it’s the design or the placement or both. Others areerasing names of the lovesoftheir livesthat turned out not to be. During the procedure, according to Julie, twoprocesses areatwork. The pigment in the tattoo absorbs the energy from the laser and breaks apart. At the same time, the incrediblyfast pulse of the laser causes the ink to shatter like asugar cube breaking apart. Once the ink is broken down by the laser, the bodyresponds by moving fluid to the area to help flush away the ink. The area will have some swelling and redness, but over aperiod of weeks, the pigment will go away. Removing atattoo takes anumber of sessions, which last from 10 to 30 minutes. A2-inch by 2-inch plain black tattoo can be removedinthree to fivesessions, Julie says. Amulti-colored tattoo will take longer, and redand blue pigments areharder to disperse. On ascale of one to 10 with 10 being the most painful, the nurse practitioner says the pain level is about asix or aseven, even though the skin is numbed with topical cream. “There’ssome pain involved in removing atattoo,” she said. “It’s not pain-free.” At Skinologie, the pricing is based on the size of the tattoo.Depending on the size, laser removal can run from about $400 to morethan $1,000.Once completed, thereshould be no trace. “The laser can completelyremove the tattoo,” Julie said. “It just takes alot of time.” VIP
