KNOWLEDGE – International Journal Vol.38.6 FROM BREXIT TO MEGXIT - LEAVING BRITAIN IN (ROYAL) STYLE Aleksandra Aleksandrova Konstantin Preslavski University of Shumen, Shumen, Bulgaria, [email protected] Abstract: When a certain expression appears in the media and becomes popular, new expressions copying its sound patterns are formed. This way, the new coinages are associated with the initial expression and acquire something of its meaning. The paper deals with the neologisms based on the name of the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle. These neologisms were formed in relation with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decision to leave their duties as royalties. The most frequently used such neologism, Megxit is defined by the Macmillan dictionary as “a humorous term for the decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to step back from their royal duties” (https://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/megxit). In its turn, it produced other neologisms derived from it. The structure of Megxit is based on the pattern of the neologism Brexit (Britain + exit), standing for “the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union” (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/brexit). It is formed by blending the personal name Meghan and the verb exit. After The new coinage Megxit became relatively well established, it led to other neologisms related to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ withdrawal from their royal duties. Some of them are derived from Megxit, such as Megxitee, Mexiteer, Megxiter, while other are a combination from the personal name Meghan and another suffix (Megulators, Meghangate). The neologism Megxit appeared as a noun, but later it started being used as a verb.

Article can be downloaded/cited here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1350506820910194 Abstract Drawing upon lived experiences, this article explores challenges facing feminist academics sharing work in the media, and the gendered, raced intersections of ‘being visible’ in digital cultures which enable direct, public response. We examine online backlash following publication of an article about representations of Meghan Markle’s feminism being co-opted by the patriarchal monarchy. While in it we argued against vilification of Markle, we encountered what we term distortions of research remediation as news outlets reported our work under headlines such as ‘academics accuse Meghan of dropping feminism like a hot potato’. Negative responses were polarised: anti-Meghan (drawing upon racist, anti-feminist, pro-empire, pro-Brexit/Trump rhetoric), and pro-Meghan (both general royal enthusiasts, and a smaller subsection viewing Markle in terms of politicised black uplift). In response, we received accusations of sexist, racist bullying, debate over definitions of feminism, claims feminism has gone ‘too far’, variously worded directives to ‘shut up’, gendered personal insults, and threats of doxxing. This article examines the tenor of public discourse around feminism and visible feminists. It questions the responsibility institutions benefitting from public intellectuals have for the wellbeing of employees in the public eye, particularly in the anti-intellectual socio-political context of Brexit and Donald Trump, where the costs for ‘visible’ women and feminist activism are ever higher.

  • Royal Bodies in Shakespearean Adaptations on Screen
Royal Bodies in Shakespearean Adaptations on Screen ANNA BLACKWELL De Montfort University MARINA GERZIC The University of Western Australia From Kantorowicz to the Windsors In her controversial essay “Royal Bodies” (2013), Hilary Mantel focuses on the intersection between the monarchy and bodies, and particularly the bodies of royal women. The essay, largely a critique of the current British royal family, argues that the concept of monarchy is constructed in such a way that the public tends to see royals as superior and untouchable, as something to be admired and looked at. Entitled “Royal Bodies in Shakespearean Adaptations on Screen,” this special issue considers the ways Shakespeare and adaptations of his plays on screen engage with the early modern royal body. The special issue seeks to move beyond Mantel’s limited analysis of the appearance of royal bodies by discussing the acts that these royal bodies undertake; political machinations, deception, murder, and conquest; as well as acts of love, heroism, and creation. The special issue also considers the political significance of the royal body in pre/post Brexit-Britain and the construction and consolidation of on-screen royalty through the processes of adaptation and remediation in digital media. The articles collected in this special issue duly build upon Ernst Kantorowicz’s landmark work The King’s Two Bodies, which analyses the political duality that English law 1 attributed to kingship; a duality predicated on the idea that a monarch possessed two bodies, a body natural and a body politic (79). This meant that while the former was mortal, the latter quality was artificial, mystical, eternal, and divine: an embodiment of both the nation and the authority of sovereignty.

At that moment, one of the biggest names of the age was born. As the actress ascended the steps of St. George’s Chapel, its interior and exterior gorgeously decorated in the most lavish and tasteful spring flowers, she was a picture of demure and fetching modesty, stylish elegance, transparent joyousness, and radiant beauty. The simplicity of her white silk wedding dress, designed by Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy, with its bateau neckline, three-quarter length sleeves, and stark, unadorned but stunningly simple bodice and skirt, coupled with the extravagant veil, five metres long and three metres wide, heavily embroidered with two of her favourite flowers (wintersweet and California poppy, as well as the fifty three native flowers of the various Commonwealth countries, and symbolic crops of wheat, and a piece of the blue dress that the bride had worn on her first date with the groom), gave out a powerful message. All bridal gowns make statements. Diana, Princess of Wales, according to her friend Carolyn Pride, used hers to announce to the world, ‘Here I am.

  • Feminist Theory and UK Media Representations of Lady Diana
Arcadia University The People’s Princesses: Feminist Theory and UK Media Representations of Lady Diana Spencer and Meghan Markle Mackenzie Myer Dr. Lisa Holderman CM460- Senior Seminar I 16 December 2020 Myer 2 I. Defining Feminism Feminism is, at its core, a humanitarian movement which strives to achieve social, racial, financial, and political equality for women. Since its inception, it can be broken into four distinct waves. The first wave (which took place from the 1840s until the 1920s) was defined by the push for women’s suffrage. The second wave (which took place from the 1960s through the 1980s) revolved around a variety of social, sexual, and reproductive freedoms, with a particular interest in contraceptive and abortion rights. The third wave (which many estimate as beginning in the late 1980s or early 1990s) focused on making feminism more inclusive for women of all races and sexualities, while also adding transgender women to the narrative. The fourth (and current) wave of feminism rose in tandem with the digital and social media age and is centered around body positivity, sex positivity, and exploring how patriarchy is damaging to men as well as women. Though each of these waves have separate defining characteristics, it is important to note that they are not stepping stones from one another. That is to say that the fourth wave of feminism is no “better” than the third. Rather, the focus of each wave of feminism is to adress whatever issues are pressing to women of the time. In many cases, the issues at hand can be related back to former waves, especially as it relates to reproductive and sexual freedoms.
