The main environmental gradient affecting syrphid communities identified by CCA was human disturbance and variables correlated with it. CCA is proposed as the first step in a method of site assessment. Keywords: Syrphidae, site assessment for conservation, multivariate analysis Introduction It is widely agreed amongst practising ecologists that a reliable quantitative measure of habitat quality is badly needed, both for short-term decision making and for long-term monitoring. Many planning and conservation decisions are taken on the basis of very sketchy qualitative information about how valuable any particular habitat is for wildlife; in addition, managers of nature reserves need quantitative tools for monitoring changes in quality. Insects are very useful for rapid quantitative surveys because they can be easily sampled, are numerous enough to provide good estimates of abundance and community structure, and have varied life histories which respond to different elements of the habitat. -

The resultant DNA barcode library includes records for 2,453 named species comprising a total of 5,200 BINs, including 2,700 CO1 haplotype clusters without species level assignment, so called “dark taxa”. Overall, 88 out of 117 families (75%) recorded from Germany were covered, more than 50% of the 9,544 known species of Diptera Germany. Until now, most of these families, especially the most diverse ones, have been taxonomically inaccessible because of the lack of specialists. By contrast, within a few years this study provided an intermediate taxonomic system for half of the German Dipteran fauna, which will provide a useful foundation for subsequent detailed, integrative taxonomic studies. Using DNA extracts derived from bulk collections made by Malaise traps, we further demonstrate that species delineation using BINs and OTUs constitutes an effective method for biodiversity studies using DNA metabarcoding. -

Examination of northern type material has revealed three synonyms: Eristalis corymbus Violovitsh, 1975 = E. fratercula (Zetterstedt, 1838), Platycheirus rarus Violovitsh, 1978 = P. manicatus (Meigen, 1822) and Melangyna stackelbergi Violovitsh, 1980 = M. coei Nielsen, 1971, all new synonyms. P. urakawensis (Matsumura, 1919) is reported new to the Norwegian fauna. The unknown larva of Eristalis fratercula was hatched from eggs and figured. Results of a survey of Syrphidae in the Jizerské hory Mts and Frýdlant region during the vegetation periods of 2002–2008 are presented. altogether 6 781 specimens of 208 species of hoverflies were collected at 49 localities by means of yellow pan traps, sweeping, Malaise traps, direct catching and other methods. Together with previous studies, 212 syrphid species were recorded in the study area. Chrysogaster rondanii Maibach & Goeldlin, 1995 is reported from the Czech Republic for the first time and is added to the national red list of invertebrates as an endangered species (eN). Dospělci jsou velcí 4-25 mm a často upoutají nápadným zbarvením, kterým mimetují různé druhy vos, sršňů, včel a čmeláků. ze světa je známo zhruba 6 000 druhů v 188 rodech (Thompson & Rotheray 1998). Z České republiky je dosud známo 401 druhů v 78 rodech, z toho z území čech 368 druhů (Mazánek 2006a). Díky atraktivnosti čeledi je faunistika i biologie středoevropských druhů poměrně dobře známá. -

The European species of Sphegina are reviewed, including a new key, complete synonymies, diagnoses, distributional and biological data for all species. The nomenclatural history of the European species is reviewed and revealed that modern workers revise their predecessors' species concepts but rarely do the same for their predecessors' nomenclature. Until now, the hoverfly fauna of Slovenia has been poorly known and existing information scattered in journals and collections throughout Europe. The checklist is based on records extracted from 35 articles and twelve collections, supplemented by two years of fieldwork. In total 274 species are listed, 109 of the subfamily Syrphinae, 162 of the Eristalinae and 3 of the Microdontinae. Keywords Checklist, Finland, Diptera, Syrphidae, faunistics Introduction Adults of Syrphidae (hoverflies or flower flies) are mimics of bees, bumblebees, wasps and sawflies. Syrphid flies are active visitors of flowers for nectar and pollen and therefore they are important pollinators. The syrphid adults are excellent fliers and often seen hovering. The larvae of hoverflies exploit a wide range of food sources. The majority of the species are predators and a large number of them feed on aphids.
