Celebrity Cinema and Hallyu 2.0 Ng Shu Min Chrystal, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Liew Kai Khiun, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore The Asian Conference on Media & Mass Communication 2015 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Through their realist cinematic portrayals of the traumatic evolution of Korean socio- political landscapes, Korean directors such as Im Kwon-Taek are synonymous with Korean national Cinema. These directors have raised the country’s cultural profile internationally through the film festival circuit. However, with the phenomenal global reach of the “Korean Wave” or Hallyu, film is no longer a singular projection of the image of South Korea. Today, television dramas have overtaken films, flooding television and small mobile screens with attractive faces of Korean celebrities. While several studies have made references to key Korean celebrities, namely Lee Young Ae, Rain and Gianna Jun, there have been fewer efforts to trace these celebrities’ trajectories within films and other platforms. This paper will explore how cinema within the Korean Wave phenomenon contributes to the ecology of the Korean Wave and the roles these celebrities play within this eco system. Abstract The focus of this dissertation is to show how the media of contemporary Korean popular culture, specifically films, are transformed into “hybrid cultural forms” through the practice of genre transformation. Since the early 21st century, South Korean popular culture has been increasingly spreading across the globe. Despite its growing attention and popularity, Korean pop culture has been criticized for its explicit copying of Western culture with no unique cultural identity. Others view the success of Korean media, both its creative mimicry and its critique of the West, as a new hybrid form that offers the opportunity for reassertion of local identity as well as challenging the global hegemony of the West. -

The film, along with this exegesis, serves to address the research question: How can anti-violence and anti-vengeance themes be communicated through images in a revenge film? Revenge films often gain audience sympathy for the protagonist through the presentation of an initial wrongdoing or harm, which gives licence for viewers to enjoy the portrayal of violent acts that the protagonist subsequently enacts on his/her revenge-targets. As a filmmaker and film researcher, I have a particular interest in revenge films that provide a more critical approach to the portrayal of vengeance and violence. -

By taking his class, I became interested in the subject of colonialism and post colonialism, and it resulted in my choosing a topic of a modem Korean intellectual presented in a modem Korean novel during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). He has been like a considerate older brother throughout my graduate study too. I am also deeply inspired by his passion and love for the field of Korean studies. -

ASN3201: East Asian Cinema Course Information: Day and Time: TBA Location: TBA Instructor: Mei- Hsuan Chiang Office: CPR 401 Office Hours: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm, or by appointment Contact: [email protected] Course Description: This survey course focuses primarily on recent masterpieces from Japan, mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea. We will look at directors, studios, genres, and film movements that are leaving a lasting mark on film history. Weekly topics include cinematic techniques and approaches of East Asian national cinemas, representations of sexuality and violence in mainstream and festival films, trans-East Asian collaboration and the relationships between East Asian national cinemas and Hollywood. Much of the class will revolve around in-class discussions of the works viewed and the articles read. No prior knowledge of any East Asian languages is required. All required films carry English subtitles, and all reading is done in English. Course Objectives: The overarching goal of this course is to introduce students to East Asian cinema through film viewing, readings, lectures, and discussions. Students will be introduced to different national cinemas from East Asia and the development of these film industries. Important aspects of East Asian societies and cultures as reflected in film will be highlighted throughout the course so that students gain a deeper understanding of both the nation’s unique cultural norms and aesthetics. A secondary goal of this course is to explore the complex relationships between national cinemas in the East Asia, and the two- way cultural exchanges between East Asian film industries and Hollywood. -
