Politics in an Age of Fantasy In the autumn of 2004, shortly before the U.S. presidential election and in the middle of a typically bloody month in Iraq, the New York Times Magazine ran a feature article on the casualty of truth in the Bush administration. Like most Times articles, it was well writ- ten, well researched, and thoroughly predictable. That George W. Bush is ill informed, doesn’t listen to dissenting opinion, and acts upon whatever nonsense he happens to believe is hardly news. (Even the fact that he once insisted that Sweden did not have an army and none of his cabinet dared contradict him was not all that surprising.) There was, however, one valuable insight. In a soon-to-be-infamous passage, the writer, Ron Suskind, recounted a conversation between himself and an unnamed senior adviser to the president: The aide said that guys like me were “in what we call the reality- based community,” which he defi ned as people who “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernable reality.” I nodded and murmured something about Enlightenment principles DDream_Layout_09-11-06.inddream_Layout_09-11-06.indd Sec1:1Sec1:1 99/11/2006/11/2006 11:48:23:48:23 PPMM 2 Dream and empiricism. He cut me off. “That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create reality. And while you are studying that reality— judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.1 It was clear how the Times felt about this peek into the po- litical mind of the presidency. The editors of the Gray Lady pulled out the passage and fl oated it over the article in oversized, multi- colored type. This was ideological gold: the Bush administration openly and arrogantly admitting that they didn’t care about reality. One could almost feel the palpable excitement gener- ated among the Times liberal readership, an enthusiasm mirrored and amplifi ed all down the left side of the political spectrum on computer listservs, call-in radio shows, and print editorials over the next few weeks.2 This proud assertion of naked disregard for reality and unbounded faith in fantasy was the most damning evidence of Bush insanity yet.

All rights reserved. Journalists, by and large, regard the “crisis” as something that happened to them, and not anything they did. It was the Internet that jumbled the informational sensitivities of their readers, corporate ownership that raised suspicions about our editorial motives, the audience itself that lacked the education or perspective to appreciate the work. Yet, 40 years of polling is clear about one thing: The decline in trust and the uneasiness of the audience with the profession and its product started well before technology began to shred the conventions of the media. In 1976, 72% of Americans expressed confidence in the news. Everyone knows the dreary trend line from that year onward: an inexorable decline over the decades.2 And if we fail to examine our part in the collapse of trust, no amount of digital re-imagining or niche marketing is going to restore our desired place in the public conversation. Ordinary working people no longer see media as a partner in their lives but part of the noise that intrudes on their lives. People will continue to muddle through: voting or not voting, caring or not caring, but many of them are doing it, as they once did, without the companionship of the press. Now elites and partisans don’t have this problem, there are niches aplenty for them.

By Walter Lippmann. Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1937. Pp. xxx, 390. $3.00. Since its first publication early last fall, Mr. Lippmann's book, The Good Society, has been the subject of a good deal of highly divergent comment. Within my own observation, the highest note of praise has been that struck by Mr. Horace J. Bridges, of the Chicago Ethical Society. "The work," says Mr. Bridges, "has stirred me to great enthusiasm. For twenty years I have been consciously waiting and longing for just such a book as this..... [It is] a work worthy to stand in the line of succession to the First Book of Hooker, to Milton's 'Areopagitia,' to Locke's 'Treatises on Civil Government,' to Burke and Adam Smith, and to John Stuart Mill.", In contrast to the enthusiasm of Mr. Bridges are the opinions of Mr. Lippmann's ex-brother socialists. From them has come a chorus of assertion and innuendo, that Mr. Lipp- mann has simply "sold out"; and even the relatively moderate Max Lerner, though absolving Mr. Lippmann of any conscious dishonesty, observes significantly that "Mr. Lippmann is a rich man; [that] his friends are the possessors of the earth; [and that] he is their prophet." His book is described as "a rationalization of the economic claims and political fears" of his friends, and he is accused of "fleeing to the Nirvana 2' of political inaction.

I used to write a ‘zine with my friend Brian Jannarelli back in our punk rock high days. We used the platform mostly to get in touch with our musical punk indie heroes (and make fun of local adults as we saw fit). I got the chance to interview Adam from Jawbreaker & J Robbins from Jawbox; the two were on tour together in ’95 and played at Lupos II. Getting in touch with bands was very different back then, as was how bands would develop. Would a band like Jawbreaker have been able to develop in the same timeframe today, as they had in the decade from mid ’80s to their demise in ’96 – from touring the unknown country beyond the West Coast / Gilman Street, and developing their craft over three albums before the majors came knocking? Or would the band have been better off skipping the old indie punk model – as today, when their base wouldn’t have felt alienated by the band’s moving on to a major label and a different sound? Their major label record, Dear You, was definitely ahead of its time. I haven’t seen this movie yet, but I look forward to seeing the footage from that time, an almost-soundtrack to my high school life and also a relic to the punk promotion days before the internet and the end of the fan’s fierce loyalty to indie efforts.
