Meals on board/Lunch/Dinner D2 YANGON – BAGO – MT KYAIKTIYO After breakfast, transfer to Mt Kyaiktiyo via Bago. Along the way, make a stop at Taukkyan War Cemetery, where the beautifully tended tombstones of Allied soldiers who lost their lives during the Second World War are located. Make another stop at Kha Khat Wain Monastery, the largest monastery in Bago, where you can catch a glimpse of the daily lives of monks. After lunch, head to Kin Pun, where you will take a 40-minute journey on a hill truck up Mt Kyaiktiyo, where the famous Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, otherwise known as Golden Rock, awaits you. The giant, precariously balanced gold boulder topped with a stupa is said to be perched on a strand of the Buddha’s hair. Do not forget to admire the paronamic views of the surrounding mountains of Mon State. Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner D3 MT KYAIKTIYO – BAGO – YANGON This morning, you may wish to admire the sunrise at the summit of Mt Kyaiktiyo before returning to Yangon. En route, explore more of Bago. Your first stop is Shwemawdaw Pagoda, the tallest pagoda in Myanmar and reputedly houses two of the Buddha’s hair. Next, proceed to Shwethalyaung Buddha, one of the largest reclining Buddha images in Myanmar, before visiting Kanbawzathadi Palace, a reconstruction of several buildings of the original palace, which was burned down. Thereafter, explore Kyauktawgyi Pagoda, housing one of Myanmar’s largest Buddha images. Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner D4 YANGON Today, enjoy a Yangon Circular Train ride to the outskirts of Yangon and witness the contrasting landscapes of rural and urban Yangon. You will start to see the green lush fields of rural Yangon before arriving at a bustling local market, Danyingone Market. Immerse in the market atmosphere as you mix among the locals, dive into the local cuisine and marvel at the unique forms of transportation while vendors go about their trade. After lunch, let your purse strings loose at Bogyoke Aung San Market. With more than 2,000 shops, you can find the largest selection of Myanmar handicrafts, jewellery, lacquerware, puppets, Shan traditional shoulder bags and souvenirs. Thereafter, return to the centre of Yangon and do not miss the opportunity to take a look at the beautiful colonial-era architecture of the city as you drive past important landmarks such as monuments, embassies and government buildings. Along the way, make a photo stop at Sule Pagoda and St Mary’s Cathedral. Then, visit Kheng Hock Keong Chinese temple, which is dedicated to the sea goddess, Mazu, and is the oldest Chinese Buddhist and Taoist temple in Yangon. Davis Enterprise - Your Local News 7/8/09 4:01 PM Art take us to a far-flung land By Diane Chin Lui | Enterprise art critic | July 08, 2009 07:21 Burma or Myanmar? Which is the official name of the Southeast Asian country? While talking with Davis resident Max Harrington, co-founder of the Myanmar Children's Foundation, he used the two names interchangeably. But when asked which was correct, he explained that 'Burma' was used until 1989, when the government changed the country's name to 'Myanmar.' Despite this, Harrington admitted that both 'Aung Pan Market (Maria),' by Maung Maung names still are used. Myanmar refers to the Thint 'Sane' (Max Harrington/Courtesy photo) country as a whole. 'Burma' or 'Burmese' describes a majority ethnic group within Myanmar. Three years ago, having just graduated from UC San Diego, Harrington started teaching English in Myanmar. While working at the Prahida Orphanage Education Monastery, he learned about a building project to replace leaky huts that served as classrooms for the orphans. Unfortunately, the monastery needed additional funds to complete the project. After the school semester ended, Harrington returned to Davis and raised enough money to help finish the construction. Harrington subsequently co-founded the nonprofit Myanmar Children's Foundation with his mother, Susan Steinberg, and Rita Montes-Martin. In two short years, the foundation, based in Davis has grown to 350 members nationally and internationally. The foundation's mission provides charitable and educational assistance to Myanmar's under-served, orphaned and low-income children. To help raise funds for ongoing and future projects, the foundation has mounted an exhibit at Davis' International House.
