The most likely culprit seems to be Elk Creek, since a sample of water taken from that stream in early August contained 913 crypto oocysts — no other sample, from any source, contained more than three oocysts. “We had no idea this was going to happen last sum- mer,” Kee said. “We have no idea why it happened, and we never will, I don’t think.” Although the mystery remains, one thing became increasingly clear as the summer progressed: The city would have to expedite its plans to install a UV treat- ment system. The city’s deadline had been Oct. 1, 2016. The City Council decided this fall to hire a contractor to install the UV system in 2014, with a goal of having it oper- ating by the end of that year. But even that accelerated schedule wasn’t sufficient protection, city officials determined. Although the state has required the city to test water for crypto twice a week, the delay of several days in receiving test results means officials wouldn’t know crypto was in the water until the contaminated water had already flowed out of faucets across the city. So Kee suggested, and city councilors agreed, to buy a temporary UV system, one that could start safeguarding water months before the per- manent treatment plant goes online. Kee said he expects that $130,000 machine will be purifying water by March 1. The Calgon Carbon Sentinel UV System will have two main benefits, Kee said. First, it will treat all the water that flows into the city’s water mains. Second, the system has the capacity to also treat the tens of millions of gallons of water the city diverts each year

My friend Greg Jarrett from Fox News was the first to point out the irony. A few days earlier, I had made the point that it was a George W. Bush appointee on the federal bench who struck down the National Security Agency surveillance program that the Bush administration (as well as the Obama administration) relied upon. Three cheers for an independent judiciary. So what happens next? A different federal judge, this one a Bill Clinton appointee, has now declared that President Barack Obama’s NSA plan does not violate the Constitution. As I told Greg, I really do love it. It means that as hard as the Senate and the interest groups have tried — and boy, have they ever — to make it impossible for people who have passionate convictions (that they have ever talked about) or unpredictable views (best never mentioned) to be con- firmed as judges and as hard as both sides have tried to turn the judiciary into a thor- oughly investigated high-level collection of political shills, it doesn’t (always) work. PASADENA, Calif. — After a regular season filled with blowout victories and easy fourth quarters, Jameis Winston and Florida State showed they could close like champions, too. No. 2 Auburn wobbled the top- ranked Seminoles by jumping out to an 18-point lead in the first half, and then put Florida State on the brink of defeat for the first time this season. Winston responded with the drive of his life and a game-win- ning touchdown pass with 13 sec- onds left that topped everything else he has done in one of the most sensational debut seasons a col- lege quarterback has ever had. The Heisman Trophy winner led the Seminoles 80 yards in the final 79 seconds, flicking a 2-yard TD pass to Kelvin Benjamin to give No. 1 Florida State a 34-31 victory against Auburn in the last BCS championship game Monday night. “The last drive, that’s a great way to cap off our season,” Winston said. “That’s the way we wanted to cap off our season.” The Bowl Championship Series went out with a bang, too, with one of the best title games in its 16-year history, right there with Texas 41, USC 38 at the Rose Bowl in 2006. That night it was Vince Young leading the Longhorns and capping a comeback by scooting into the end zone with 19 seconds left. Setting goals

Assignment: Think of three goals you would like to achieve in your future. What can you do now to help you prepare? Emma F., a student at Hillcrest Elementary School, North Bend, will receive a prize for her submis- sion on this topic: Some goal I want to accomplish is reading. I would like to start reading harder.I also want to read more so I can get a teachers degree. I hope to get in a good college and a college degree. Another goal I want to accomplish is doing well in school and at home. I want to keep my room and desk clean. I always have laundry on the floor and closet. So I want to paint my room pink. My dad and I made a deal, that if I can keep my room clean for 2 years I can paint my room pink. HILLCREST ELEMENTARY Hi my name is Ethen and these are my 3 goals? My first goal is to be the best racer in the world. To do that you’ll have to practice ,practice, practice!!!Or you won’t achieve that goal. My second goal is to be the best track runner in the world. To achieve that goal you'll have to exercise & practice, practice, practice & that's how you achieve that goal. My third goal is to be the best sci- entist. To do that I'll have to study and practice, practice, practice. If I do that I'll achieve this goal. And that's my 3 goals. Ethen B. Some goals I want to accomplish one to get better in math and read- ing. Sometimes I get confused by math and reading. I want to get bet- ter in reading so I can read some his- tory books like Amelia Airhart. Another goal I want to accom- plish is to read more fairy tale stories I want to read the fairy tale stories because some have mysteries and princesses. I want to get smarter in the stories because if somebody asked me if I new a fairy tale I could say yes I do. Another goal I want to accom- plish is in school I would like to get better in school. I want to get better in school because so I can move on in school. Will W. My one life goal is to play football fore the Carolina panthers. they are my favorite football team and I want to play tight end. And I want to play basketball for the Miami heat. they are my favorite basketball team. they won the championship last year. I like all sports but my favorite one is wrestling. I like Daniel Bryan he is my favorite. he always wins but he is not champion. He should be because he beat the champion. he won super star of the year on Monday. My last goal is to run two miles with out stopping. I also want to eat better because I do not eat that good. I want to go on a diet and eat better so I can be more healthy. Trevor H. My New Years Resolutions My school related resolution is to break a bad habit of just throwing everything in my desk when I’m done with it. Now hears the sad part: My biggest pet pive is messy desks. What made me think of this is the other day I was trying to find my box of crayons and I couldn’t find them My home related resolution is to be more organized with my stuff. Kind of like my school resolution I know. If I try to find a certain thing in my room I barely ever find what I’m looking for. What made me think of this is the other day I looked under my bed My health related resolution is to exercise more. I’m going to jog around a track by my house. I will probly go with my mom or my friend Bailey. I am very happy and very proud with my resolutions. Emma C. My New Year Resolutions The New Year Resolutions are pretty simple, are yours? My first resolution is to be more organized. To start that, I can try to clean my room more often, like once a month. I can also try to clean my desk more often. The second resolution I have is to be more exercised. To start that, I can ride my bike more, take walks every other night, and many, many more activities. Now for my third resolution, which is to reach a high note in music. To start that, I can start singing songs with higher notes in them.?????I hope that my resolutions come true, and so do yours! Happy New Year!!!!!!! Sarah P.

C4• The World • Tuesday, January7, 2014 DILBERT How to make a simple fruit fly trap Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruit fly, and I go way back to my high FRANK AND ERNEST school biology class and a unit on genetics. We raised fruit flies in little Petri dish- es. Then we’d anesthetize them so we could look at them through the micro- scope to see how our genet- ic predictions sized up with the number and gender of babies born overnight. It was great fun. The most amazing thing, however, was not how easy it was to THE BORN LOSER EVERYDAY under- stand CHEAPSKATE domi- nant traits and inherited charac- teristics, but how fast those suckers Mary multi- ZITS Hunt plied. Fruit flies live to find fermenting fruit. They can detect the smell of ripe fruits and vegetables from miles away. If there’s a bowl of fruit on your kitchen counter, there’s probably a swarm of fruit flies looking for a way into your home to get to it. Because these insects are so CLASSIC PEANUTS tiny, they can get in through window screens or crevices around windows or doors. Once inside, they repro- duce. Before you know it, THE FAMILY CIRCUS you’re dealing with a full- fledged fruit fly infestation. While I remember them as being so adorable in their little Petrie dishes, fruit flies are anything but cute buzzing around your head or dive-bombing anything FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE that could be considered edible. Even a single critter can be so annoying. Conventional wisdom says that if you are careful to remove every trace of detectable food source, you will have no fruit flies. Don’t believe it. For days this one tiny drosophila was driving us crazy at DPL Central. I promise you that I scoured this place upside ROSE IS ROSE down and inside out to make sure there was not a single morsel of food out in the open. That sent me on a mission to put an end to this once and for all. I tried several home remedies, which didn’t work to nab that fly. Then I found it — the single effec- tive fruit fly trap. It is quite simple: First make sure that you LUANN have fruit or another detectable food source sit- ting out and available. Next, assemble these three items: A small glass bowl, plas- tic wrap and apple cider vinegar. Any other type of vinegar will not work. It must be apple cider vinegar. Pour some vinegar in the bowl. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap, pulling GRIZZWELLS the wrap back just a tiny bit at one edge to allow for entry. That’s it. Just set it out on the counter and go about your business. It took a day to nail that little pest who flew in to enjoy his final meal. And while I was quite sure there was only one fly driving us crazy, apparently it was a family of five.
