Operating out of Bermagui, the Puglisi family are well recognised in the fishing industry and operate a number of vessels out of the port. One of these vessels, “MELISA”, is a fine example of a typical board trawler that can be seen operating on the east coast of Australia. Built in 1982 by Bob McLaren, this 57 tonne, 60’ carvel timber trawler was originally powered by a 3408 18Lt Caterpillar which produced a maximum output of 365hp and was burning 62 Lts/hr as an average fuel consumption based on a normal days fishing operation. In mid November 2005 the old engine through in the towel and after having spent a substantial amount of money on it a couple of years prior to keep it in service, Dominic & Bruno Puglisi went to Bermagui based and Authorised Yanmar dealer, Craig Hurst of Craig Hurst Engineering for advice. Upon inspection of the old engine, Craig gave Dominic & Bruno the bad news, the old engine was beyond repair and a re-power would be the best way forward.

Both Dominic & Bruno had heard a lot of good reports about the Yanmar commercial engine product range over the years through both Craig & other commercial fishermen up and down the East Coast of Australia. So when Craig suggested that they look at a Yanmar as a replacement, they were keen to see what Yanmar had on offer. Craig then got in touch with Power Equipments Steve Parsons who is responsible

In a recent follow-up call to Dominic The first comment to be made by one of the Puglisi brothers only a few minutes Puglisi to see how the engine was after the engine was started was; “we can’t get over how quiet it is performing, he had this to say; compared to the old engine, the difference is just amazing” “We’re more than happy with our After the engine had come up to temperature and fluid levels re-checked, move to Yanmar,” Dominic Puglisi Dominic Puglisi steered “MELISA” away from the wharf and out of the harbour. As said. “Massive fuel savings, they headed for the fishing grounds Dominic also noted; lengthened service intervals and greater reliability….. what more could ”I can’t get over the responsiveness and instant power that the engine I possibly ask for?” was able to deliver as we pulled away from the wharf” “Our fuel economy has dropped to an Having had a hearty breakfast cooked fit for a king and served for all onboard and amazing 38 Lts/hr and with the 500hr having reached the fishing grounds, it was time to put the gear in the water (the service intervals, our running costs have dramatically reduced since the Yanmar was installed. Fuel savings alone are in the order of $50,000 + per year based on the current diesel prices that we are paying and with the service intervals cut in half we are experiencing even greater reductions in our running costs”.

Craig Hurst too is singing the praises of this new engine and recently had this to say to P.E.’s Steve Parsons;

“ Steve..... I can not get over how good this engine is. Since going into service it has not used a drop of oil or coolant and has not given a single minute of down time but the best bit of all is the fact that there is not a single oil leak to be seen anywhere. The big Twin Disc transmission (MG- 5114 DC @ 4.86:1) runs much cooler due to the new seawater cooled oil cooler compared to the old fresh water cooled oil cooler on the old engine...... it is so much easier to service also due to its compact design and the filters and anodes are positioned so that they are all easy to get at for routine maintenance. I would not hesitate to recommend this engine to anyone else...... it is just that good.

With the gear in the water and the trawling speed set, the engine performed flawlessly with very little change to the critical readings such as the exhaust gas temperatures. During the seatrial the engine was made to stretch its legs to once again check all critical engine parameters but at the same time check the top speed of the vessel whilst in trawling mode. Much to their amazement, Dominic, Bruno and the rest of the “MELISA” crew could not get over the 1.2 knot increase in speed.

Yanmar 4TNE106-SA

Blue Sky Marine is well known in boating circles in Adelaide for their Yanmar Marine Diesel Engine expertise and Slipway, for commercial and pleasure boats. However, as Yanmar Marine Diesel Engine Dealers, they also have access to the full range of Yanmar Industrial Diesel Engines. So when it came time to replace the “Gas Guzzling” petrol V8 in their travel lift, it had to be a Yanmar Diesel.

The lift was built some twenty five years ago, and originally powered by a very noisy Detroit Diesel three cylinder 53 series engine. When the Detroit Diesel wore out it was replaced by a five litre petrol V8. When Peter Bolton took over Blue Sky Marine the petrol V8 worked well, but the fuel consumption was very high at around eight to ten litres per lift. This wasn’t too bad when petrol was around 85 cents per litre. However, at around $1.45 per litre the cost is unacceptable. During their annual shutdown of the slipway, a decision was made to replace the engine in the lift with something more economical.

Working with Power Equipment the Yanmar 4TNE106-SA industrial diesel engine was selected for its compact size and low speed power compared to the petrol engine. Having made the decision to replace the engine, the hydraulics were serviced and the chains replaced.

The lift is now back in service and initial performance results are quite impressive. Fuel consumption is now three to four litres per lift, and the performance of the lift has been greatly improved. The operator no longer has to keep adjusting the engine throttle allowing the operator to concentrate on lifting the boat.

In all, lifting times have been reduced especially for larger boats, and the machine is generally more efficient. More important, the cost of the operation has been reduced in line with expectations.

NEW PRODUCT TRAINING: 6LY3 & 4JH4 TURBO SERIES 2006 marks the introduction of electronic controlled diesel engines. With 2 electronic engine families being introduced this year, the time had come to start product training for the Australian Marine dealer network. First off the rank was the 6LY3 family, the electronic version of the well proven 6LY and 6LY2 series engines.

Dealer technicians from South Eastern Australia gathered at our Melbourne training facility for a two day session with classroom presentations as well as hands on training. A brand new 6LY3-ETP engine had been set up for test running and to put the servicing and relevant removal and replacement procedures in practise.

Presentations were made on the differences between 6LY2 and the 6LY3 engine families. The technicians were put through laptop driven software before the engine was test run and some a very thorough session and knowledge test in setting up and fault diagnosis was performed by each individual. initiating the new electronic remote control and monitoring system. Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

Over the past 61 years, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has become an icon of Australia’s summer sport, ranking in public interest with such national events as the Melbourne Cup horse race, the Davis Cup tennis and the cricket tests between Australia and England. No yachting event in the world attracts such huge media coverage – except, of course, the America’s Cup and the Whitbread Round the World Race – than does the start on Sydney Harbour. And the others only happen every four or five years.

Custom Australian and New Zealand racing yachts fitted with Yanmar engines finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th overall in regards to line honours results in the 2005 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht race. Further evidence of Yanmar’s domination in this event was also reflected in the race handicap results with all top 10 yachts in the final overall IRC standings also being equipped with Yanmar propulsion engine packages.

Wild Oats XI built by McConaghy Boats in Monavale Sydney took line honours and in doing so re- created history by taking home ‘the treble’- line honours, handicap victory and a new course record with a time of 01:18:10:40 over the 628 mile course. Wild Oats XI skipper Mark Richards became the first skipper since Rani’s victory in the inaugural race of 1945 to win “the treble”. This result was made even more astounding as the newly built Wild Oats XI was only commissioned 3 weeks before the race, leaving precious little time to test and rig the yacht for battle.

Only one hour separated the top two places with race favourite Alfa Romeo (also built by McConaghy Boats- Sydney) crossing the line to finish a gallant second with (Mal Hart Marine- Mornington Victoria) taking third place nearly 6 hours behind Wild Oats XI.

The role of the Yanmar engine in a super maxi racing yacht is becoming increasingly complex. Hydraulically operated canting keels, high flow water ballast systems along with complex hydraulic winch and battery charging systems rely heavily on the diesel propulsion engine systems to ensure large scale tasks can be managed quickly and efficiently with fewer racing crew.

The lightweight characteristics and proven reputation of the purpose built Yanmar marine engine packages is also reflected in the race handicap results with the Yachts in all of the Top 10 IRC overall standings all boasting Yanmar diesel engines on board with many also specifying the renowned Gori propeller.

Australian yacht builders dominated the overall event with boat builders from NSW, QLD and VIC well represented not only in the top 10 IRC placing but also right throughout the entire fleet of 85 yachts. A special mention to Sydney Yachts from Nowra in NSW who achieved a treble also with 3 IRC divisional winners with their world leading designs all fitted with Yanmar sail drive product and Gori Propellers. meo after race start rghi The stunning results for Yanmar in this years 2005 Rolex Sydney to Hobart are testament to the efforts of the local Australian Distributor’s Power Equipment staff as much effort has gone into supporting the local boatbuilding industry and boat owners over many years. The proven reputation and quality of the Yanmar sail drive and propulsion engines have again delivered the results for these race winners and excellent worldwide sales results by Yanmar prove them also to be the flavour within the global sailing community.

With Yanmar providing the power for 5 out of the top 6 yachts to take line honours and also partnering the entire top 10 yachts in the overall IRC standings, the results of the Rolex 2005 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race could not have been more satisfying for one of the world’s most respected marine diesel manufacturers.

The first is a TF60E that was sold over ten years ago and has done more than 10,000 hours. Col and Joan Schafferius bought the engine from Mal Russell at Russell and Sons in Toowoomba Qld. Russell and Sons have been a long standing Yanmar Dealer and when asked to supply an engine and pump set that could draw water from a surface supply 30 meters down a very steep mountain side, they chose Yanmar and Mono 420 surface pump.

The Engine pump combination had to supply water for a horse stud at Maa-Maa creek near Toowoomba. The climb down to the engine was so steep that Mal had to remove the key start switch and install it at the top of the cliff, because it was too hard to get to the engine. When this is considered you might wonder how often the engine was serviced. Well obviously it was because it gave ten years of trouble free Above: Mal Russell selecting the new Yanmar service and was still running when pulled out. engine from his showroom. Below: Old Yanmar TF60E The only reason it was taken off the job was because the Horse Stud depends on it for water, and when its age was considered along with the difficulty for servicing, a new Yanmar TF60E was ordered. The old engine was taken back to Russell and Sons workshop. Mal swapped the remote key switch assembly on to the new engine and then decided to have a look inside the old one. Mal said “the bore was remarkably good, the valves had never been touched and the engine had never been opened up and in fact still had the original rings”. This engine will now be reconditioned and sold as a second hand engine while the new engine has taken over the crucial job of supplying water to the horses.

The second engine is a Yanmar TS155 sold in 1983 by Geoff Tickle when he worked for the then Queensland Yanmar Distributor, CPN Diesels.

The engine was bought by Gary and Denise Brown “Our Selection” at Wamuran Qld. Originally it was used for irrigating a Lychee crop. Nowadays, trouble apart from the time some rats built a nest in the air it pumps 8000 litres per hour from a dam to a holding tank for intake. This caused the engine to over heat and even though stock watering and small crop irrigation. it got very hot, no residual damage was done.

Gary says he has no idea how many hours the engine has Even though he admits to not servicing his engine as much done in the past 23 years and that it has never given him any as he should, Gary says he does love his Yanmar.

Intelligen International Pty Ltd has developed a new state of the art power supply package for off grid applications, either on land or water (houseboats), called IntelliGen 24seven series.

The land package includes a diesel engine driving a variable speed 3 phase alternator connected to a converter/inverter to produce a constant output of up to 10kw @ 240 volts, 50 hertz, regardless of engine speed. The system is further enhanced by its own battery system which provides power to the inverter when the engine isn’t running, say at night when power usage is low, (maybe a couple of lights on and a TV on and intermittently a refrigerator). The transition from battery supply to generator running supply is seamless, and the system is set to start the engine when the electrical load exceeds 1.2kw.

This land based power system is a single unit 2 metres long x 1.8 metres high x 0.8 metres deep, designed to be placed on a concrete slab, tank filled with diesel fuel, power cables connected to the switchboard, press ‘auto’ on the control panel, and you have power for your home. The land unit is rated at 55dB(A) @ 1 metre.

The system for houseboats has 3 main components, 1-engine/ alternator in acoustic enclosure, 2-inverter/converter, 3-battery system. These three components can be located to suit space, weight and accessibility.

The IntelliGen 24seven is also available for use with LPG or natural gas.

IntelliGen International Pty Ltd chose the new YANMAR 3TNV70 as its power source because of its power output across the usable range for this system 1200 to 3000 rpm., low fuel consumption, low exhaust emissions, and its single sided servicing features. Yanmar 3TNV70

IntelliGen International 24seven variable speed generators allow you to equip remote homes and houseboats with all the same conveniences you’ve come to rely on in the city. If you can plug it in, you can run it....with power to burn.

Mase Generators S.P.A have recently introduced the new IS10.8 which is ideally optimised for Catamaran applications.

With a narrow width of only 510mm and an all up package weight of only 185Kg, the IS10.8 is a compact unit which packs a punch. With a max rating of 10.8 kW and a continuous rating of 9.7 kW (both at 50 Hz), the IS10.8 offers excellent output in a compact package.

Using Mase’s unique intercooler assembly, the IS10.8 will run at the ideal operating temperature independent of the external ambient temperature. This helps to eliminate temperature related de-rating in many operational applications.

The introduction of the IS10.8 compliments the already excellent existing range of Mase on board generator sets offered by Power Equipment. Contact your nearest Power Equipment or authorised Dealer for more information.

Mr Lars Pedersen, edersen, edersen, Gori Propellers Denmark visits PPvisits ower Equipment During August we were very fortunate to have a visit from Lars Pedersen, Gori Propeller’s Area Sales Manager from Denmark. Lars’s has many years of experience with the Gori product and during his extended visit here which was timed in conjunction with the Sydney Boat Show we took advantage of his willingness to share this information and introduced him to many of our boat builders and dealers. In conjunction with the many client visits, Lars’s also took the opportunity to meet the Power Equipment Marine Sales team and answer the many queries that we had, together with a comprehensive update of their overseas sales success and the new 4-blade Gori propeller. As this was also Lars’s first trip to Australia we also managed to find a little time for sightseeing as well to ensure he went home with a good understanding of our regional market opportunities and a taste of the local hospitality.

Thanks to Lars and to Gori Propeller for making the long trip to Australia and providing such an informative and beneficial trip for our Lars at the 2006 Sydney International Boat Show clients. In the next edition of Power News we will profile some of the new Yachts featured at the Sydney Boat Show fitted with the unique 3- blade Gori overdrive propeller. The excellent feedback being received from boat builders and yacht owners alike who are using the Gori product no doubt confirmed that Lar’s visit and the efforts of our staff and dealers in promoting this exceptional product is more Lars gets to meet some satisfied Gori Propeller than justified. owners at Sandringham Yacht Club, Victoria
