Originally put on the map by ETE is a true performer when it comes to low down torque, fuel economy and above the late Zane Grey, Bermagui is all reliability and longevity. It also has key feature such as side inspection covers, recognised as being one of Australia’s 500 hour service intervals, a bell housing surrounding the front harmonic balancer for top game fishing locations due to its ease of mounting a PTO, easy to service front mounted and gear driven seawater relative closeness to the continental pump, above-earth 24-Volt electrics, a long stroke for high torque output across the shelf and surrounding reef structures. Operating out of Bermagui, the Puglisi family are well recognised in the fishing industry and operate a number of vessels out of the port. One of these vessels, “MELISA”, is a fine example of a typical board trawler that can be seen operating on the east coast of Australia. Built in 1982 by Bob McLaren, this 57 tonne, 60’ carvel timber trawler was originally powered by a 3408 18Lt Caterpillar which produced a maximum output of 365hp and was burning 62 Lts/hr as an average fuel consumption based on a normal days fishing operation. In mid November 2005 the old engine through in the towel and after having spent a substantial amount of money on it a couple of years prior to keep it in service, Dominic & Bruno Puglisi went to Bermagui based and Authorised Yanmar dealer, Craig Hurst of Craig Hurst Engineering for advice. Upon inspection of the old engine, Craig gave Dominic & Bruno the bad news, the old engine was beyond repair and a re-power would be the best way forward. Both Dominic & Bruno had heard a lot of good reports about the Yanmar commercial engine product range over the years through both Craig & other commercial fishermen up and down the East Coast of Australia. So when Craig suggested that they look at a Yanmar as a replacement, they were keen to see what Yanmar had on offer. Craig then got in touch with Power Equipments Steve Parsons who is responsible for looking after Craigs account and informed him of the situation at hand. Fortunately for Dominic & Bruno, Power So with the engine of choice selected and the go-ahead given by the Puglisi’s, Craig Equipment Melbourne carry a set about the task of removing the old engine and getting the engine beds ready for comprehensive range of commercial the new Yanmar. The engine was shipped to Bermagui and arrived at Craig Hurst engines in stock for these exact Engineering within two days of the order being placed. With the engine sitting in situations where urgent re-power are Craig’s workshop, he then set about getting it ready to install by mounting the engine called for. driven accessories such as the power steering and 2" deck wash pumps. With this task complete and the engine room also ready, the engine was transported down to Based on the type of application and the the commercial wharf and then craned into the engine room via the freezer existing engine installed in “MELISA”, room, which is located directly behind the engine room. After a pre start-up inspection of the high quality installation, the key was the Yanmar performance and efficiency turned for the first time and the big Yanmar fired into life instantly. which they had been hearing about for so long. In a recent follow-up call to Dominic The first comment to be made by one of the Puglisi brothers only a few minutes Puglisi to see how the engine was after the engine was started was; “we can’t get over how quiet it is performing, he had this to say; compared to the old engine, the difference is just amazing” “We’re more than happy with our After the engine had come up to temperature and fluid levels re-checked, move to Yanmar,” Dominic Puglisi Dominic Puglisi steered “MELISA” away from the wharf and out of the harbour. As said. “Massive fuel savings, they headed for the fishing grounds Dominic also noted; lengthened service intervals and greater reliability….. what more could ”I can’t get over the responsiveness and instant power that the engine I possibly ask for?” was able to deliver as we pulled away from the wharf” “Our fuel economy has dropped to an Having had a hearty breakfast cooked fit for a king and served for all onboard and amazing 38 Lts/hr and with the 500hr having reached the fishing grounds, it was time to put the gear in the water (the service intervals, our running costs have dramatically reduced since the Yanmar was installed. Fuel savings alone are in the order of $50,000 + per year based on the current diesel prices that we are paying and with the service intervals cut in half we are experiencing even greater reductions in our running costs”. Craig Hurst too is singing the praises of this new engine and recently had this to say to P.E.’s Steve Parsons; “ Steve..... I can not get over how good this engine is. Since going into service it has not used a drop of oil or coolant and has not given a single minute of down time but the best bit of all is the fact that there is not a single oil leak to be seen anywhere. The big Twin Disc transmission (MG- 5114 DC @ 4.86:1) runs much cooler due to the new seawater cooled oil cooler compared to the old fresh water cooled oil cooler on the old engine...... it is so much easier to service also due to its compact design and the filters and anodes are positioned so that they are all easy to get at for routine maintenance. I would not hesitate to recommend this engine to anyone else...... it is just that good. With the gear in the water and the trawling speed set, the engine performed flawlessly with very little change to the critical readings such as the exhaust gas temperatures. During the seatrial the engine was made to stretch its legs to once again check all critical engine parameters but at the same time check the top speed of the vessel whilst in trawling mode. Much to their amazement, Dominic, Bruno and the rest of the “MELISA” crew could not get over the 1.2 knot increase in speed.
