INVENTORY OF UNSCANNED NEGATIVES IN THE LANE BROTHERS COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHERS PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION: PORTRAITS SERIES (PART 2) G1985-33 (SERIES 4) SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AND ARCHIVES GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY ATLANTA, GEORGIA Unscanned Negatives in the Lane Brothers Collection, Portraits Series, Part 2 NOTE The Lane Brothers Commercial Photographers Photographic Collection consists of about 258,100 (196,800 4x5 inch and 61,300 2 1/2 inch) acetate negatives which are housed in 43,486 envelopes. The collection spans the years 1920 to 1976 with the bulk of the negatives dating from 1939 to 1975. Some of the images are copy negatives of photographs which date as early as 1864. This inventory describes the contents of one of the 6 series of the Lane Brothers Commercial Photographers Photographic Collection. This document was created to optimize searching the collection’s contents in Georgia State University Library’s Digital Collections. It is the second of 5 inventories listing the envelopes containing negatives in the Lane Collection Portraits series from which no digital scans have been made as of April 2012. Though new scans will be added to the Digital Collections as an ongoing project, this inventory will not be updated. Extent Approximately 26,400 acetate negatives which are housed in 12,197 envelopes. (Jack) Lane (1889-1970) began work as a freelance photographer for the Atlanta News in 1914. He and his brother W. C. Lane (1885-1964) founded the Lane Brothers Photo News Service, in which they were later joined by their sons, J. D. (Dan) and W. C., Jr. After the 1939 demise of the News' successor, the Atlanta Georgian, they established their own studio, Lane Brothers Commercial Photographers. One of the leading photographic firms in Atlanta, it closed circa 1980. Scope and content The portraits series consists of about 26,400 acetate negatives which are housed in 12,197 envelopes. They span the years 1925 to 1974 with the bulk of the negatives dating from 1939 to 1971. The series is organized alphabetically by the subject's last name. The images consist primarily of portrait photographs for company directories, passports, and insurance claims. Also included are candid shots, weddings, sports teams, and organizations. The images include babies, children, couples and families. Images consist of individual and group portraits, including head shots, medium close-ups, and full-length shots. In some cases, notable public figures are included in this category rather than in the Events series because the event is not identifiable. Some prominent subjects include: Ivan Allen, Sr., Ivan Allen, Jr., Ellis Arnall, Tallulah Bankhead, Cotton Carrier, Cecil B. DeMille, Bobby Dodd, Henry Grady, Marvin Griffin, William B. Hartsfield, Bob Hope, Bobby Jones, Roy LeCraw, Margaret Mitchell, Ralph McGill, Eddie Rickenbacker, E.D. Rivers, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, Eugene (Gene) Talmadge, Herman Talmadge, M.E. Thompson, Ernest Vandiver, and Robert W. Woodruff. System of arrangement Negatives are organized in alphabetically arranged envelopes by subject. Unidentified portraits are at the end of the series.
