GO TEAM O! Yours in Sport, Marc Seguin Chair, Sport Alliance Ontario Team Ontario Athletes Handbook ~ 2015 Canada Winter Games Page 5 Greetings from Blair McIntosh, Chef de Mission On behalf of Team Ontario, congratulations on being selected to represent the province at the 2015 Jeux du Canada Winter Games in Prince George, British Columbia . As a member of Team Ontario you join the hundreds of athletes who before you, have worn the Ontario team colours and represented the province with pride, dignity and class . Many of our athletes have gone on to make a name for themselves in international and professional competition and in doing so, have helped to put Ontario on the sports map . At the Canada Games, Ontario athletes have consistently achieved outstanding results in this high profile, national multi-sport event . While there is much emphasis to achieve success on the field of play, it is equally important for us to continue to be leaders in fair play and respect for others off the field of play . This winter in Prince George, we all look forward to more fun and success . Your Mission Team has committed a tremendous amount of time and effort on your behalf in preparation for these Games . I hope our hard work allows you to concentrate on competing to the best of your abilities and that you will enjoy your Canada Games experience to the fullest . It is my honour to lead you in pursuit of the Canada Games Flag as the Chef de Mission . Together, let’s make Ontario proud! Yours in sport, Blair McIntosh Chef de Mission Team Ontario Team Ontario Athletes Handbook ~ 2015 Canada Winter Games Page 6 Background The Canada Games began in 1967 as a centennial project and are held every two years, alternating between summer and winter games . The Canada Games are hosted on a rotational cycle as agreed upon by the federal/provincial/territorial ministers of sport . The Canada Games are a national multi-sport competition for Canadian amateur athletes at the “train to compete” level . Each province and territory’s team consists of its best “up and coming” athletes in their respective sports . Athletes are at the provincial level and are pursuing development towards national and international competitions . Athletes who have already attained national level status do not compete in the Canada Games . Over a two week period, more than 4,000 athletes, coaches, managers and Mission Staff will participate in the Canada Games . Team Ontario has a team of approximately 350 athletes, coaches and managers at the winter games and approximately 450 at the summer games . Team Ontario Athletes Handbook ~ 2015 Canada Winter Games Page 7 Upcoming Canada Games The following Games and the host province or territory have already been determined: • 2017 Canada Summer Games: Winnipeg, Manitoba • 2019 Canada Winter Games: Red Deer, Alberta Communities begin the bid process for the Games six years in advance of the actual event and the Games are awarded five years in advance . The Canada Games Council establishes the bid procedures and requirements which provide details on the sports and facilities and the financial framework for the Games . The host provincial or territorial government nominates up to three municipalities as potential host cities . If more than three municipalities are interested in bidding for the Games, a process to short-list those communities must take place . The Canada Games Council develops a final evaluation report and the recommendation is forwarded to the Minister of Sport . Ontario has hosted the Canada Games twice, in 1981 in Thunder Bay and in 2001 in London .

Interestingly enough, Sam Jacks was also responsible for the development and introduction of floor hockey in 1936. Since the early 1960s, the sport has continued to grow and currently boasts over 30,000 registered players (based on the 2013-2014 season) on nearly 2000 teams, with over 8000 coaches and over 1500 officials.
