It was the first official meeting between the Member Churches of the Irish Council of The Preparatory Years 3 Churches and the Irish Episcopal Conference and is thus an historic event. - Rev Michael Hurley SJ The period since 1973 40 This first Meeting led to a process of ecumenical encounters and co- operation which has grown in intensity over the twenty-five years. - Rev Dr Ian Ellis Proposals are currently before the Churches which could lead to a further stage of development in interchurch relations. To commemorate the 25th Anniversary the Irish Inter-Church Committee commissioned two reflective essays. The first is by the Rev Michael Hurley SJ and it seeks to place the first Irish Inter-Church Meeting in the context of broader ecumenical developments of that time. The second is by the Rev Dr Ian Ellis who seeks to bring the story up to the present. We thank them for what they have done and hope that their work will be of interest to all those who are interested in the development of Irish ecumenism. The story of ecumenism in Ireland has been intertwined with that of `The Troubles' over the last twenty-five years, particularly in Northern Ireland.

    Service to mark the Reverend John Sullivan SJ Christ Church Cathedral Dublin, Evensong Trinity ii June 14 2015 St Mark 10.27: Jesus looked at them and said: For human beings this is impossible, but not for God; everything is possible for God. INTRODUCTION Recently I had the opportunity to watch the film: The Imitation Game. As you know, it tells the story of a number of people, and in particular the story of Alan Turing, a brilliant young man, who broke The Enigma Code during the Second World War. One phrase stuck with me and I wonder if somehow it might offer at least a partial approach to describing the man whom we honour today and it goes like this: Sometimes it’s the people no one imagines anything of who do the things no one imagines. Purists will rightly wince at the grammar, but I think the sentiment is quite helpful. It is a gentle way of describing people who are quite remarkable, indeed unconventional, as history discloses them, allows them to unfold, almost despite themselves; yet the wonderful thing is that they never expected to be thought of as great and may never even have wanted to be such; and it rather embarrasses them into the bargain; these are the very reasons they are delightful and saintly and memorable – there is not an ounce of spiritual contrivance or ambition in them. And that really is saying something! Such may indeed have been the fate of that extraordinary man John Sullivan SJ - or as I prefer to call him: OPSJ: Old Portoran and Society of Jesus - whom we gather to honour today.

John Horgan The 1950s in Ireland, it can be said without much fear of contradiction, have had a bad press. Tom Garvin’s tour d’horizon of this decade described a society ‘divided over who had responsibility for governing the country, and an underground and rather confused struggle ... between secular and religious authorities, neither being quite sure who was in control, or even who ought to be in control. All this was going on behind closed doors, and the general public merely heard incoherent noises and shouts and were not consulted about issues that did, after all, concern their collective future’.1 Even in contemporary Catholicism, there were moments of frustration, or at least puzzlement. Manus O’Neill, a columnist in the somewhat erratic Catholic weekly, The Standard, wrote in May 1954 that he could ‘never remember any period that was more subdued, grey, unexciting and empty of promise’.2 Post-war emigration was, of course, a major factor in accounting for such quiescence. In the 1950s, approximately half- a-million people left the Irish Republic. Considering the country’s population then stood at less than three million, to lose approximately sixteen per cent of its population – most of whom were very young and left to gain employment abroad – in one decade was astonishing.

As well as teaching on the MPhil, the appointed person will be expected to supervise MPhil dissertations and participate across the range of the School’s activities, attending the Dublin campus of ISE and Trinity College as necessary. The successful candidate will be a person with expertise in the social/political sciences or religious studies/theology or other relevant discipline, with an interest in conflict resolution, peace studies or reconciliation.     George Tyrrell and John Sullivan: Sinner and Saint? Michael Hurley SJ 15 July 2009 is the 100th anniversary of the death of George Tyrrell SJ. Tyrrell was born into a Protestant family in Dublin in 1861 but later became a Catholic and then a Jesuit – a description that also applies exactly to the life of another Irish Jesuit, John Sullivan. Michael Hurley SJ contrasts the lives of these two men, who, despite their similarities, lived and are remembered very differently. George Tyrrell and John John Sullivan SJ before George was born.
