Issue 4 11 Newsletter from The Tristate Hindu Temple & Cultural Center January 2017 Bhagavad Gita nainam chindanti shastrani nainam dahati pavakah na chainam kledayanty apo na sosayati marutah The soul can never be pierced by any weapon, nor can he be burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor dried by the wind. Message from Panditji, Shri Surendra Mishra: Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls during Dhanur solar month in Hindu calendar. Dhanurmasa is known as Margazhi month in Tamil Calendar. It is believed that Vaikuntha Dwaram or the gate of Lord's inner sanctum is opened on this day and devotees who observe fast on Vaikuntha Ekadashi attain salvation. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is very important for Tirumala Venkateswara Temple at Tirupati and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam. Pongal is a Hindu festival observed by people of Tamil Nadu. Pongal is a four days festival and the most important day of Pongal is known as Thai Pongal. Thai Pongal is the second day of the four days festivity and is also celebrated as Sankranti. The same day is observed as Makar Sankranti in North Indian states when people take holy dip in river Ganges. Makar Sankranti or Sankranthi: The time between Makar Sankranti and 40 Ghatis (roughly 16 hours for Indian locations, 1 Ghati duration is 24 minutes) from the time of Makar Sankranti is considered good for auspicious work. This duration of forty Ghatis is known as Punya Kaal. Sankranti activities, like taking bath, offering Naivedhya to Lord Surya, offering charity or Dakshina, performing Shraddha rituals and breaking fast or Parana, should be done during Punya Kaal.

The Lord is knowledge (Chaitanya), who is the source and illuminator of all knowledge. Light removes darkness, just as knowledge removes ignorance. The ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vasanas or negative thoughts and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, like the wick our negative thoughts get burnt away slowly and our ego perishes too. The flame of a diya always burns upwards, signifiying that we should acquire knowledge that takes us towards higher ideals. When lighting the diya, we pray: Shubham karoti kalyanam Arogyam Dhana Sampadah Shatru Budhi Vinashay Dipa Jyotir Namostute. Let us all fill our lives with knowledge and wisdom, and just as the diya gives light to many more diyas, may we also share our knowledge and wisdom with each other.

  • Religious Rituals in Modern Garment Factories in Nepal Mallika Shakya
Our hymns are different but our gods are the same: Religious rituals in modern garment factories in Nepal Mallika Shakya This article deals with the emerging literary convergence between the two strands of literature that examine the rise of modern capitalism among the inherently acapitalistic societies of South and East Asia. Singer’s (1972) ethnography of the Indian industrial leaders of Madras establishes a case for “a palimpsest for continuity and change” in terms of modernization of business and socio-religious organisation among the elite industrial leaders. An essential supplement to it are Ong’s (1987) ethnography of the Malayasian modern factory workers and Parry’s (1999) study of the Indian industrial labour, both of which explore the inherent psychological and cultural dilemma that the predominantly rural workforce faces as they proceed towards adapting to the Fordist and Taylorist methods of industrial production. Such converging literature reiterates the falsity of the linear dogmatism of the modernisation theory, on both counts – among the industrialists as well as the workers. Drawing from an ethnography1 of a readymade garment industry in Nepal, which is at the forefront of the course of globalisation in the country, I offer a discussion on the extent to which the changing religious rituals in the modern industrial sphere support the Singerian deduction on the incessant coexistence of religious creed with capitalistic calculations, and the extent to which the two pillars of industrialisation, i.e., the industrialists as well as the workers, are part of and share this entangling temporal conundrum. Milton Singer’s book When a Great Tradition Modernizes: An Anthropological Approach to Indian Civilization (1972) is one that has a similar stature as Dumont’s Homo Hierarchicus in Indian anthropology, or Weber’s Protestant Ethics and the Spirit of Capitalism in economic sociology, both as an exploration of “culture” in economic territories and as a critique of the stale old comparative static of the conventional sociological modernization theory.
