14 Hours • Unabridged Come Back to the Ringworld—The
READ BY PAUL MICHAEL GARCIA Come back to the Ringworld—the most astonishing feat of engineering ever encountered. A place of untold technological wonders, home to myriad humanoid races, and world of some of the most beloved science fiction stories ever written. The human Louis Wu; the puppeteer known as the Hindmost; Acolyte, son of the Kzin called Chmeee: legendary beings brought together once again in the defense of the Ringworld. Something is going on with the protectors. Incoming spacecraft are being destroyed before they can reach the Ringworld, vampires are massing, and the Ghouls have their own agenda—if anyone dares approach them to learn. Each race on the Ringworld has always had its own protector. Now it looks as if the Ringworld itself needs a protector. But who will sit on the Ringworld throne? “Readers who remember Ringworld from earlier encounters will no doubt relish the latest installment of the saga.” —New York Times Book Review LARRY NIVEN is the multiple Hugo and Nebula award–winning author of the Ringworld series, along with many other science fiction masterpieces. His Beowulf’s Children, coauthored with Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes, was a New York Times bestseller. He lives in Chatsworth, California. PAUL MICHAEL GARCIA, an AudioFile Earphones Award winner and former company member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, received his classical training in theater from Southern Oregon University, where he worked as an actor, director, and designer. Ringworld Engineers Larry Niven PART ONE CHAPTER 1 UNDER the WIRE
Ringworld 02 Ringworld Engineers Larry Niven PART ONE CHAPTER 1 UNDER THE WIRE Louis Wu was under the wire when two men came to invade his privacy. He was in full lotus position on the lush yellow indoor-grass carpet. His smile was blissful, dreamy. The apartment was small, just one big room. He could see both doors. But, lost in the joy that only a wirehead knows, he never saw them arrive. Suddenly they were there: two pale youths, both over seven feet tall, studying Louis with contemptuous smiles. One snorted and dropped something weapon-shaped in his pocket. They were stepping forward as Louis stood up. It wasn't just the happy smile that fooled them. It was the fist-sized droud that protruded like a black plastic canker from the crown of Louis Wu's head. They were dealing with a current addict, and they knew what to expect. For years the man must have had no thought but for the wire trickling current into the pleasure center of his brain. He would be near starvation from self-neglect. He was small, a foot and a half shorter than either of the invaders. He — As they reached for him Louis bent far sideways, for balance, and kicked once, twice, thrice. One of the invaders was down, curled around himself and not breathing, before the other found the wit to back away. Louis came after him. What held the youth half paralyzed was the abstracted bliss with which Louis came to kill him. Too late, he reached for the stunner he'd pocketed. -

Ringworld 04
Ringworld 04 Ringworld's Children Larry Niven This is for the firemen of California and neighboring states who fought the fires of October 2003, with particular thanks to those who saved our house and others in Indian Falls, Chatsworth, Los Angeles County. PREFACE The Ringworld is about the same mass as Jupiter. Its shape is that of a ribbon a million miles across and six hundred million miles long, which makes it a bit larger than the Earth's orbit, and a few miles thick. It circles a yellow dwarf star. Its spin, at 770 miles/second, is enough to give it about Earth's gravity of centrifugal force. Walls along both rims, standing a thousand miles high, are enough to hold an atmosphere for millions of years. Much else derives from these basic assumptions. The inner surface is a habitat three million times the area of planet Earth. The topography is literally a work of art, carved in by whoever built the thing, so that from underneath the Ringworld resembles the back of a mask. An inner ring of shadow squares block the sun, giving periods of night; else it would always be noon. A system of pipes leads from the bottoms of oceans, under the Ringworld floor, up the back of the rim wall and over the edge, to recycle seabottom ooze (or flup) into spill mountains. Huge attitude jets stand atop the rim wall, Bussard ramjets using the solar wind of protons for their fuel, to hold the Ringworld against its inherent instability. There are spaceport ledges outside the walls. -
"Hard" Sf, with Its Emphasis on Science and Technology, Has Become Dated During
CHAPTER 5 "Hard" sf, with its emphasis on science and technology, has become dated during the last twenty-five years (Arbur, 1979), although Larry Niven, with his winning mix of wholly believable aliens and technology which operates logically and credibly within the laws of physics applying to Nivens space (Nedelkovich, 1980), has used this medium with resounding success during the last two decades. Nivens wildly exploring imagination has created the fantasies of alien engineering encountered in Ringworld (1972) and the amazing Piersons puppeteers introduced in his book of short stories Neutron Star (1968). In such short stories as "The Lion in His Attic" and "Talisman" (Limits, 1985), Niven has also used the more ancient "natural" magic of the universe to achieve his settings, a "maybe" time on Earth when old magic was dying out. But he also delights in making the present a more tenuous place in which to find oneself living; Lucifers Hammer (1977), written with Jerry Pournelle, impacts heavily on the reader because of its present day setting and its concentration on the view of world affairs created by the media. Some of its scenes would translate directly to a film set as they graphically describe the desperate need of journalists to obtain maximum media coverage of the end of the world, giving this book an immediacy with which all viewers of prime-time television news programs can readily identify. Throughout Nivens work there is a theme of optimism and a breath of humour can often be found pervading even the darkest moments. Whereas Ron Hubbard, for instance, threatens alien invasion from space monsters, recalling xenophobic attitudes from the 1950s "flying saucer" era, Larry Niven provides characters who are xenophiles such as Louis Wu in Ringworld, and scenes where the maximum entertainment is obtained from the wide variety of aliens present. -
Are Full Face Snorkeling Masks Dangerous?
Are Full Face Snorkeling Masks dangerous? Accidents involving Full Face Snorkel Masks (FFSM) in the US have led to several posts and articles on Social Media suggesting FFSM are dangerous to use. But is this really so? To answer this, we need to understand how these masks work and which risk is present. The problem The air we breathe contains about 21% oxygen (O2) and up to around 0,04% carbon dioxide (CO2 ). Many do not realise that it is the CO2 that is primary responsible for our breathing rate & depth and not O2. CO2 is therefore a very important component of the air in our lungs and increased CO2 levels could lead to unconsciousness which, if happening while in the water, can result in drowning. O2 is consumed (metabolized) and CO2 is produced by our body, resulting in an increased level of CO2 (to about 4%) and a decreased O2 level (to about 16%) in the air we exhale. As we breathe out, we do not empty our airways completely. A small amount of air (CO2 enriched) remains in the airways. This volume of a breath that does not participate in gas exchange is called the dead space. Therefore, when we inhale again, we are actually breathing in a mix of “fresh air” and CO2 enriched air. When breathing through a snorkel we are increasing “the length of our airways” and consequently increase the volume of dead space. Should this total volume become too big, we would end up with a high concentration of CO2 in the inhaled air, leading to the risk as described earlier. -
