Sunday, October 13th Thanksgiving Sunday T for time to be together, turkey, talk, and tangy weather. H for harvest stored away, home, and hearth, and holiday. A for autumn's frosty art, and abundance in the heart. N for neighbours, and October, nice things, new things to remember. K for kitchen, kettles' croon, kith and kin expected soon. S for sizzles, sights, and sounds, and something special that abounds.

Next week: World Food Sunday It is easy to see ourselves in the persistent widow…it is far less comfortable to place ourselves in the role of the unjust judge from which social justice is demanded.

DEEPEST SYMPATHIES

Friendly Callers! Over the next few weeks, -St James Friendly Callers will be phoning everyone in the current Glebe-St James directory. This will be to confirm that we have up-to-date information. But at least as important is staying in touch with members of the Glebe-St James community and to let you know about what is happening.

Do you have questions? Feedback? Would you like a visit from one of our ministers or a member of our pastoral care team? Would you like to get more involved? These are all things you can discuss with the Friendly Callers!

If you do not wish to be called, or would like to schedule a call, please get in touch with Jennifer Reid at (613) 236-0617 ext. 21 or at [email protected]

Looking for Friendly Callers We have a dedicated team of Friendly Callers, but there is room for more! If you would like to be part of this important work in the life of Glebe-St James, please let Jennifer Reid know. This involves making telephone calls three or possibly four times a year. In addition to the calls themselves, an important part of the role is to take good notes and pass them to Jennifer so we can follow up.

Many of the callers are also members of the Friendly Visitors pastoral care team, although the two roles are not necessarily linked. If you are interested in this aspect of what we do as a congregation, Jennifer can put you in touch with Adele MacLeod, the coordinator of our pastoral care ministries.

Monday Craft Group Will reconvene on November 25th

“God Keep Our Land . . . In God We Trust” Religion and Politics in Canada and the United States Glebe-St. James presents an illustrated talk by Tom Sherwood, long-time friend of our congregation, followed by discussion. This two-hour session will provide food for thought as we prepare to vote in the October 21st federal election. Taking place in the Sanctuary at 7 pm on Wednesday October 16th, this event arose from discussions within our Men’s and Friends Group but is by no means a men-only affair. ALL are welcome – “Yes, everybody!”. Bring your friends and neighbours. Admission is free.

With federal elections in Canada this month and in the United States next year, we are aware of religious groups and values in the public discourse. The religious history and make-up of the two countries are somewhat similar, and yet religion seems to function quite differently in the public life of Canada and the United States. How can we understand this better? This is a repeat of the lecture Tom gave at Carleton University on September 23rd to a capacity audience. Short bio of Tom Sherwood: https://carleton.ca/chum/people/tom-sherwood/

The launch event for my third novel, Carbon Copy: A Frances McFadden Mystery will take place on Sunday, October 27th at 7:00 pm at Glebe-St. James United Church (650 Lyon Street at First Avenue).

Many characters familiar to readers of The Underling (2012) and The Incrementalist (2016) reappear, however, there is a fiction genre shift from history to mystery.

Frances McFadden, personal secretary to Bank of Canada Governor Graham Towers, is summoned before a military intelligence tribunal in February 1942, where she is accused of espionage and treason. Her claims of innocence fall on deaf ears, so she gets drawn down a rabbit hole of deception and death trying to solve the puzzle.

All are welcome to the launch. Cookies will be served. Books can be purchased for $25 cash or cheque.

If pressing affairs of state have you otherwise engaged on the 27th, Carbon Copy will be available in independent book stores in Ottawa by October 21st and in electronic format and POD (print on demand) from Amazon in early November.
