Former Ohio State Defensive End Chase Young Wins Big Ten Male Athlete Of The Year Even after being selected second overall by the Washington Redskins in the 2020 NFL Draft, Chase Young continues to bring in the hardware from his time with the Buckeyes. This time, the former Ohio State defensive end was named the Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year, with the middle blocker on Wisconsin’s volleyball team, Dana Rettke, earning Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year for the 2019-20 academic year. Johnson (@R2X_Rushmen1) June 11, 2020 Young makes it seven Ohio State players to win the award since its inception in 1982, and the first football player from any Big Ten school since Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne in 2000. He is the first Ohio State student athlete to win since wrestler Kyle Snyder won the award in back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018. The other former Ohio State winners are Eddie George (football) in 1996, Blaine Wilson (gymnastics) in 1997, Evan Turner (basketball) in 2010 and Logan Stieber (wrestling) in 2015. There have been three Buckeyes that have been recipients of the Female Athlete of the Year: Laura Davis (volleyball) in 1995, Jessica Davenport (basketball) in 2007 and Christina Manning (track and field) in 2012. In his junior season with the Buckeyes, Young broke the single-season program record with 16.5 sacks, a total that also led the country. His efforts earned him a trip to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist, while also winning the Bednarik and Bronko Nagurski trophies, both of which honor the best defensive player in the nation. Young finished his Ohio State career with 99 tackles, 42 1/2 tackles for loss, 30 1/2 sacks and nine forced fumbles. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound edge rusher recorded 21 tackles for loss (1.75 per game), which tied him for fourth in the country. Young, who finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, recorded the second-most forced fumbles in the nation with six. He did all this despite missing two games due to a suspension. With the Cincinnati Bengals expected to select Southern Ohio native and former Buckeye Joe Burrow with the No. 1 pick, the Washington Redskins sit at No. 2 with former Ohio State standouts Dwayne Haskins and Terry McLaurin on the team. The Hodge Trophy has been awarded since 1995. The three-time NCAA champion finished first in the voting, just ahead of teammate Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.). A Nittany Lion has now won the last three Hodge Trophy awards. Nickal joins former Nittany Lion greats Zain Retherford and David Taylor, who each claimed two Hodge Trophy honors, and former Lion stand-out Kerry McCoy, who won the honor in 1997, as Penn State recipients. In all, Penn State now has four different individuals who have won the honor six times. The Nittany Lion won his third NCAA championship on March 23, defeating Kollin Moore of Ohio State. The 5-1 finals victory at 197 pounds was Nickal’s 30th of an undefeated senior campaign that included 18 pins, three tech falls and six major decisions. In a year that featured four outstanding finalists for the award, known as “wrestling’s Heisman Trophy,” Nickal won the honor over a senior teammate Jason Nolf, also a three-time NCAA champ who had very similar stats as Nickal. The other two Hodge finalists were Rutgers’ senior Anthony Ashnault and Cornell sophomore two-time champ Yianni Diakomihalis, who won NCAA championships at 149 and 141 pounds, respectively.
