Katz 301 Preface and Acknowledgments On a delightful April day in 2013, on the banks of Boston’s Charles River (where some of Massachusetts’ finest universities are located), a talented group of international scholars gathered to consider how the increasingly mobile nature of information technology is affecting human interaction and social organization. The conference, like this book, had the title Living Inside Mobile Social Information. Each of those words is important. The term living points to the enacted nature of the process, while inside connotes both the internal and integrated nature of the experience of having mobile technology in one’s life, as well as the fact that practically all people are now part of the mobile culture. It is simply assumed that one can and should be available and reachable—if not by anyone, at least by someone; one can no longer be “outside” of mobile communication. Social denotes the human context of the word information, and their pairing indicates that the data which constitutes information flows through human lives and is therefore interpreted by people seeking to make meaning out of the material. In the saturated world of mobile communication, there is only “inside,” and the “outside” from which we can gain an external perspective is vanishing. However, much knowledge can be gleaned from being insiders. Using a metaphor drawn from the local scene near Boston University, we can invoke the famous stained glass Mapparium at the Mary Baker Eddy Library, part of the Christian Science Center in Back Bay, Boston. Opened to the public in 1935, this three-story structure allows one to stand in the center of a three-dimensional, stained glass globe and take in a 360° view of the Earth’s surface. Commentators have noted that the Mapparium vii viii Living Inside Social Mobile Information is without equal in the world: this dome is unique in that it is the only existing platform from which an observer can see the Earth’s face undistorted by the effects of positional perspective. As the Atlas Obscura website notes in their section on this captivating landmark, even when looking at an ordinary globe, perspective distorts the relative sizes of relationships among the continents. Although we cannot make a similarly bold claim for the papers presented in this volume, we nonetheless trust that they give the reader at least some new perspectives on the world in which we live. And, of course, the views presented—unlike those available in the Mapparium—are affected by the selectivity and perspectives of the authors and editor, as well as of course the limitations of the data. Still, we put them forward as one in a continuing series of steps to better understand and analyze the world of communication around us. It is a perspective offered from the inside. This Living in Mobile Social Information workshop and book was sponsored by the Division of Emerging Media Studies at Boston University’s College of Communication and cosponsored by Microsoft Research and Motorola Mobility. It would certainly not have been possible without the generous encouragement and support of many people. The workshop was hosted by the Division of Emerging Media Studies, which is a newly inaugurated academic unit housed within Boston University’s College of Communication. The chapters here represent both the cutting edge of mobile social media studies as well as the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of contemporary communication research—it would be injudicious and counterproductive to force this collection of research topics into strictly confined categories. As infrastructure for mobile technology advances, it grows more interconnected with other systems, affecting ever-wider portions of our existence. (Here, in discussing “existence,” we can point to the economic, political, social, cultural, ethical, and philosophical levels of human enterprise that it encompasses.) In contrast with so many other fields, mobile social media studies are notable for the absence of a set of shared questions to guide research. Further, as this fascinating field continues to grow, the evidence becomes stronger that traditional individual disciplines such as economics, 3 4 Living Inside Social Mobile Information political science, and sociology—or even more recent arrivals such as communication—do not address many important queries on their own. While individual disciplines propose essential building blocks towards greater understanding, coordinated strategies are needed.     June 7, 2010 ANALYSIS OF THE FTC’S DECISION NOT TO BLOCK GOOGLE’S ACQUISITION OF ADMOB Randy Stutz and Richard Brunell* Introduction On May 21, 2010, after months of investigation, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it would not challenge Google’s $750 million acquisition of AdMob, a mobile advertising network and mobile ad solutions and services provider.1 In this white paper, we present AAI’s analysis of the FTC’s decision. The FTC found that, but for recent developments concerning Apple, the acquisition “appeared likely to lead to a substantial lessening of competition in violation of Section 7 of the Clayton Act.” According to the FTC, Google and AdMob “currently are the two leading mobile advertising networks, and the Commission was concerned about the loss of head-to-head competition between them.” The companies “generate the most revenue among mobile advertising networks, and both companies are particularly strong in … performance ad networks,” i.e. those networks that sell advertising by auction on a “per click” or other direct response basis. Barr Attorney General United States Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20530 Dear Attorney General Barr: We write to raise serious concerns regarding Google LLC’s (Google) proposed acquisition of Fitbit, Inc. (Fitbit).1 We are aware that the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice is investigating this transaction and has issued a Second Request to gather additional information about the acquisition’s potential effects on competition.2 Amid reports that Google is offering modest, short-term concessions to overseas enforcers to avoid a full-scale investigation of the transaction in Europe,3 we write to urge the Division to continue with its efforts to conduct a thorough and comprehensive review of this proposed merger and to take any and all enforcement action warranted by the law and the evidence. It is no exaggeration to say that Google is under intense antitrust scrutiny across the globe. As you know, the company has been under investigation for potential anticompetitive conduct across a number of product markets by the Department and numerous state attorneys general, as well as by a number of foreign competition enforcers, some of which are also reviewing the proposed Fitbit acquisition. Competition concerns about Google are widespread and bipartisan. Against this backdrop, in November 2019, Google announced its proposed acquisition of Fitbit for $2.1 billion, a staggering 71 percent premium over Fitbit’s pre-announcement stock price.4 Fitbit—which makes wearable technology devices, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers— has more than 28 million active users submitting sensitive location and health data to the company.

The main purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of content likeability, content credibility, and social media engagement on users’ acceptance of product placement in mobile social networks. The results of the online survey indicate that content likeability is an antecedent of social media engagement and content credibility; social media engagement has an influence on content credibility; and content likeability, content credibility, and social media engagement both directly affect user acceptance of product placement in mobile social networks. Furthermore, social media engagement has an interaction effect with content likeability on the content credibility of mobile social networks. The results of the multi-group analysis indicate that young adults show differences with middle-aged adults in the direct effect of content likeability on social media engagement and in the interaction effect of content credibility and social media engagement on the acceptance of product placement in mobile social networks.

    If Google Is A 'Bad' Monopoly, What Should Be Done? Google Inc. is currently subject to antitrust investigations by state attorneys general in the United States, as well as antitrust authorities in the European Union. Google and its allies have mounted a vigorous public defense, arguing that Google’s activity should be immune from antitrust scrutiny or that imposing a remedy on Google would transform antitrust enforcers into some kind of undesirable “software regulatory agency,” which would threaten innovation in the Internet. These arguments are reminiscent of the claims made 20 years ago that antitrust analysis was too outdated to apply to high-tech industries. That argument was rejected then, and it should be rejected now. Exclusionary conduct by a dominant firm can distort fair competition in high-tech markets, Samuel Miller just as in more traditional markets. Antitrust remedies can, and should, be imposed to make sure that a dominant company does not improperly keep rivals out of its markets or improperly strengthen its dominant position, to the detriment of consumers and innovation. EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia rejected Google’s original proposals to resolve claims of anti-competitive conduct in July 2013, and is currently considering a revised proposal submitted by Google. So what remedy proposals would make sense? This article will outline potential antitrust remedies that may appropriately be imposed upon Google, assuming antitrust authorities or courts determine that Google has violated the antitrust laws. In this paper we present our current experience of aggregat- ing user data from various Social Web applications and outline several key challenges in this area. The work is based on a concrete use case: reusing activity streams to determine a viewer's interests and generating television programme recommendations from these interests. Three sys- tem components are used to realise this goal: (1) an intelligent remote control: iZapper for capturing viewer activities in a cross-context televi- sion environment; (2) a backend: BeanCounter for aggregation of viewer activities from the iZapper and from different social web applications; and (3) a recommendation engine: iTube for recommending relevant tele- vision programmes . The focus of the paper is the BeanCounter as the first step to apply Social Web data for viewer and context modelling on the Web.     Opportunities and Challenges for Standardization in Mobile Social Networks Laurent-Walter Goix, Telecom Italia [email protected] Bryan Sullivan, AT&T [email protected] Abstract This paper describes the opportunities and challenges related to the standardization of interoperable “Mobile Social Networks”. Challenges addressed include the effect of social networks on resource usage, the need for social network federation, and the needs for a standards context. The concept of Mobile Federated Social Networks as defined in the OMA SNEW specification is introduced as an approach to some of these challenges. Further specific needs and opportunities in standards and developer support for mobile social apps are described, including potentially further work in support of regulatory requirements. Finally, we conclude that a common standard is needed for making mobile social networks interoperable, while addressing privacy concerns from users & institutions as well as the differentiations of service providers. 1 INTRODUCTION Online Social Networks (OSN) are dominated by Walled Gardens that have attracted users by offering new paradigms of communication / content exchange that better fit their modern lifestyle. Issues are emerging related to data ownership, privacy and identity management and some institutions such as the European Commission have started to provide measures for controlling this. The impressive access to OSN from ever smarter mobile devices, as well as the growth of mobile- specific SN services (e.g. WhatsApp) have further stimulated the mobile industry that is already starving for new attractive services (RCS 1). In this context OMA 2 as mobile industry forum has recently promoted the SNEW specifications that can leverage network services such as user identity and native interoperability of mobile networks (the approach promoted by “federated social networks”).

    Twitter – a personal perspective Catriona Fisher Customer Services Manager University of Glasgow Library Email: catriona.fisher@glasgow. ac.uk twitter: @catrionafisher I joined Twitter in March 2009, but like most people I spent the first few months wondering what on earth this strange new world was all about. As a devoted user of Multiply, then Bebo and later Facebook, I was no stranger to social net- working, but Twitter was quite obviously some- thing different. I quickly realised the following: • you need your tweets to be public • the best way to get followers is to follow other people • hashtags are a must if you want your voice to be heard amongst the millions of tweets. I started out tweeting solely about work and had intended to have two accounts, one for work and a personal account (as I do with Facebook), but I quickly realised that many professionals on Twit- ter were tweeting about their work lives and their personal lives from the same account. This takes a bit of getting used to, but is very much the norm on Twitter. I now tweet from my own account @catrionafisher and also on behalf of the University of Glasgow Library @uofglibrary, along with a group of staff from Library Services. We’ve found Twitter to be a really powerful way of reaching out to students and other library users and it is now one of our primary channels of communication when we need to share informa- tion quickly. For example, we are using it to keep students up to date with any disruption during the work to re-clad the library building.
