DATE PUBLISHED – Oct 7, 2010

This week's program was Auedrah Hummelen, a graduate of McMaster University and the co-coordinator of the Kid's Circle program. This program, not well-known by many in the community ,is funded by the United Way. It is designed to help youngsters between the ages of 4 and 18 who are having a difficult time coping with either a life-threatening illness in the family or the recent death of a loved one. Many of the participants have parents or grandparents who are suffering from cancer or other terminal diseases. Others have had close friends who were killed in car accidents. Some enter the program before the actual death of the loved one and others are directed to it after finding it difficult to accept an unexpected death. Since Auedrah started the program a few years ago, over 280 kids have been involved. Many of these recently participated in creating a video. In this video, the youngsters talked about the help that they received from this program and the impact it has had on their life during their time of grief. The video, conceived, filmed and edited entirely by the teenage participants of Kid's Circle, was shown to Rotarians by Auedrah to help show the need for this program and to illustrate the obvious help received by many of the participants. The motto of Kid's Circle is People Die - Love Doesn't. Our speaker was introduced by Rotarian Brian Worrall and thanked by Rotarian Doug Sulman. New Office Location The office now has the phone, internet and fax working properly. We have most of the office in order, now it is just a matter of remembering where we have put things. Thank you for patience as we adjust to our new home. Our new office location is with the Capitol Theatre offices located on the second floor of the Scotia Bank building at 213 King St. W. The entrance is off the parking lot at Scotia Bank. There is an elevator and stairs to the second floor. The office is straight down the hall first door on the left. Special thanks to Tom McNaughton, Tom McCarthy, Rick Bodnaruk, Andy Watson, Darcy Want, Diego Flores, Charles Seaman, Brad Langford, Keith Koke and his staff. The move went very smoothly with all your hard work and muscles.

Canadian Rotary Centennial Project

Centennial School in Jalalabad was dedicated on Sunday September 26th, five months ahead of schedule and under budget. They continue to receive donations from individuals and clubs and these funds will be used towards improving the school and have just surpassed $ 290,000.00. The Dedication was attended by a number of government and school officials, many respected elders, and local Rotarians. The ceremony had considerable local media coverage. In their speeches, the elders emphasized the importance of the education in Islam and equal opportunities for boys and girls. The expressed their gratitude, appreciation and 100% support to the Canadians for their generous gift and mentioned that their children will never forget they are sitting inside their class room instead of sitting under trees and rain. They asked that this message be conveyed to everyone responsible for funding the school and how grateful they are and that they need us to help them to educate their children to achieve a better and peaceful future.

Annual Banquet Please forward any sold tickets and money to the office as soon as possible. Don’t forget to reserve your table. There are round tables of 8 and 10 available. Please contact the office to get your table(s) booked.
