REPORT ON THE STATE OF THE ARTS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES IN SOUTH AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES Prepared for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Ahmed Essop December 2015 1 1. Introduction This report on the trends in, and the size and shape of, the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) at South African universities between 2000 and 2013, which was commissioned by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (AWMF), has the purpose of informing the Mellon Foundation’s “policy and practice on grant making” in AHSS at South African universities in line with the Foundation’s new Strategic Plan, which calls for “a bold and creative approach to grant making, responsive to promising new organisations as well as to established institutions” and which seeks “a larger family of grantees to underscore the potential contribution of the humanities and arts to social mobility”. The report is based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis, including unstructured interviews with selected academic and institutional actors in AHSS. Furthermore, in line with the Mellon Foundation’s focus, which does not include professional fields in the humanities and social sciences, the analysis focuses on the arts and non-professional humanities and social sciences (ANPH), as outlined in Appendix Two. 3. Part One: Size and Shape of AHSS in South African Universities 3.1 Background The role and status of AHSS has been the subject of public debate in the recent past as a result of two studies – the Academy of Science of South Africa’s (ASSAf) Consensus Study on the State of the Humanities in South Africa (ASSAf, 2011) and the Charter for the Humanities and Social Sciences (DHET, 2011) commissioned by the Minister of Higher Education and Training. -

The literature review covers books, chapters in books and edited collections, journal articles, Internet documents and reports, theses and dissertations, interviews, audio/video recordings and podcasts, as well as a number of blog postings, with their posting dates indicated. Newspaper articles and stories are not generally included, unless of substantial length or of special significance. Records are grouped under a range of regional/country and topic-specific headings. -

It acknowledges that the production of cultural value in any kind of setting is not always just a social process, but it is also always politicised and leaning towards the prevailing social power. The prize-winning short stories are highly influenced or dependent on the material conditions of the stories’ production and consumption. The content is shaped by the prize, its requirements, rules, and regulations as well as the politics associated with the specific prize. As James English (2005) asserts, “[t]here is no evading the social and political freight of a global award at a time when global markets determine more and more the fate of local symbolic economies” (298). -

Report on the 2015 Caine Prize and related activities 2015 Prize “Africa’s most important literary award.” International Herald Tribune This year’s Prize was won by Namwali Serpell from Zambia, for her story ‘The Sack’ published in Africa39 (Bloomsbury, London, 2014). Namwali Serpell’s first published story, ‘Muzungu’, was shortlisted for the 2010 Caine Prize for African Writing. In 2014, she was selected as one of the most promising African writers for the Africa39 Anthology, a project of the Hay Festival. Since winning the Caine Prize in July, Chatto & Windus in the UK and Hogarth in the US have bought world rights to her debut novel The Old Drift. For the first time in the history of the Caine Prize, the winner shared her prize money with the other shortlisted writers. Namwali Serpell next to the bust Chair of judges, Zoë Wicomb praised ‘The Sack’ as ‘an extraordinary story of the late Sir Michael Caine. about the aftermath of revolution with its liberatory promises shattered. It makes demands on the reader and challenges conventions of the genre. -

BORDERS REVIEW OF THE 2019 PEN ANTHOLOGY SILVER LINING In 2003, the Nigerian chapter of PEN International published Melody of Stones, its first anthology of Nigerian writing. Silver Lining, is PEN Nigeria’s second anthology. Published by University Press Plc in the second half of 2019, Pen Nigeria President, Folu Agoi and Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, the editors, spoke in their Editorial about the need to REVIEW OF SILVER LINING (Borders copyright ©2019 - Olatoun Gabi-Williams) Page 1 put together a ‘robust’ work of Nigerian literature; one which will project, as ‘one vibrant voice’, an intergenerational caucus of artists and thinkers: early career, mid- career and veterans. No legislated themes or approaches: writers were asked to make their own choices about what to express and how. Before I begin my review of Silver Lining, I would like to take a quick look at examples of the world-wide campaign to mainstream African literature. It continues to gain ground. France-based Nakiri – Rights Solution and digital distributor, Italy- based StreetLib , two stakeholders in the success of African publishing, have come together to scale the sale of foreign rights and distribution of francophone books across international and linguistic boundaries, leveraging expertise in rights trading and cutting-edge digital technology. Individual linguists across Africa and community resources such as the Red Sea Cultural Centre, Hargeysa, Somaliland, are translating books and short stories into local languages to encourage consumption of African literature by the widest possible local audience. The Mabati Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African literature was inaugurated for the purpose of translating texts from, between and into African languages and to promote writing in African languages. -

These institutions are either located within discrete units or centres at the country’s universities, or they stand alone as governmental or parastatal agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), or collaborative arrangements such as research networks between different local, regional, and international actors, including actors in African low-income countries and other regional developing countries. The evolution of a critical social sciences research tradition in South Africa parallels the struggle against colonial and apartheid rule, where data and research helped to lay the foundation for key post-apartheid institutions. A significant contribution of social science knowledge generation enterprise in the post-apartheid period is its contribution to national policy making. In this context, the intention of this study was to map the social science research environment in South Africa, to conduct a political economy analysis thereof, and to develop a framework for measuring the outputs, outcomes, and impact of this environment to development. The study adopted a mixed methods design, incorporating both qualitative (specifically key informant interviews) and quantitative (specifically a survey targeted at social scientists in South Africa and a bibliometric analysis) research approaches. -

Introduction The inaugural International Publishers Association (IPA) Africa Seminar, entitled ‘Publishing for Sustainable Development – The Role of Publishers in Africa’ – was jointly organised by the IPA and the Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA), and held at the sumptuous Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, Nigeria on 9 May, 2018. Guest registration desk. Guests networking at the welcome reception. Like the Oscars… Some 180-odd delegates and guests knew they were at a special event as soon as they saw the entrance lobby to the conference room. This was decked-out, Oscars style, with ‘wrapped walls’ featuring the name of the event and the logos of the main organisers, the IPA and NPA. This made the perfect backdrop for pictures and was stylishly executed. It also added a touch of glamour, an effect accentuated by the presence of conference ‘stewardesses’ in sparkling dresses. A professional room Badges and Seminar programmes were duly collected and delegates were able to mingle over refreshments before making their way into the spacious conference room where the stage and lighting were also very professional. The presence of a drumkit and African drums to the side of the stage was a hint of further excitements to come. Guest registration desk. The President of the Nigerian Publishers Association Gbadega Adedapo gave the first opening address in which he said that African publishing had a good story to tell, but that it hadn’t “shouted about it loudly enough”. -

مجلس تنمية البحوث اﻹجتماعية في أفريقيا Call for Applications: 2nd CODESRIA/CASB Summer School in African Studies and Area Studies in Africa Dakar, 22 to 27 August 2016 Interdisciplinarity in Area Studies: Basic and Applied Research The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and The Centre for African Studies Basel (CASB) call for applications for the 2nd CODESRIA/CASB Summer School in African Studies and Area Studies in Africa. The Summer School sets out to stimulate and consolidate interdisciplinary approaches in research on Africa, but also on other regions of the world undertaken from within the African continent. It focuses on African Studies as an instance of area studies and seeks to identify themes that are theoretically, conceptually and methodologically relevant to the reflection on the intellectual challenge of Africa as an object of knowledge and its contribution to general scholarship while inquiring into the relevance of the findings to African approaches to other regions. The goals of the Summer School can be broadly defined in the following manner: • The Summer School allows PhD and MA students, under the guidance of senior scholars, to engage critically with new theoretical, conceptual and methodological developments in African Studies and Area Studies in Africa in general and make them relevant to their work; • The Summer School stimulates PhD students to reflect on the potential relevance of knowledge on Africa to the task of improving our theoretical, conceptual and methodological tools both for the disciplines as well as for interdisciplinary work; • The Summer School fosters among PhD students a sense of belonging to a community of scholars in pursuit of knowledge and scholarship; • The Summer School encourages junior scholars to work towards carving a space for African Studies or Area Studies in Africa in general in the broader field of scholarship and in this way helping to place Africa right at the centre of knowledge production. -
