As Domestic Commissioner, Rob’s role was to direct and oversee all aspects of the domestic rowing scene, a huge role. Among his many achievements in those years, Rob developed and managed the original RNZ website and was also instrumental in bringing about the improvements in safety at regattas and for rowing in general. Rob has had a lifelong involvement in our sport and has many accolades to his name. He joined the Reading Rowing Club in England in 1965, rowed in the University of London 2nd eight, gained a “Full Purple” as a member of the University of London 1st eight, became President of the University of London Boat Club, rowing in the “Purple Eight”. He represented Great Britain at the European Championships in 1969, was admitted to the prestigious Leander Club, retiring from active rowing in 1972 and arriving in New Zealand and starting up his dentistry practice in New Plymouth in 1974. He is a life member of Clifton Rowing Club and these days, having retired from dentistry, lives on Waiheke Island. Rob has maintained a lifelong interest in photography and is seen regularly at our major regattas with his camera, capturing memorable moments from what better position than as an umpire boat driver! A regular attendee of the Henley Royal regatta, this year he took part – rejoining some of his rowing mates from yesteryear! We look forward to sharing some of Rob’s stories and experiences at the Legion Annual General Meeting on Sunday August 5th. Here is a man whose knowledge of our sport is unsurpassed! ******************************************************************************************************************* What has the Legion achieved in the past year? https://www.lor.kiwi/a-legion-update/ ******************************************************************************************************************* Junior Trust Awards Report from Paula Storey: "The farewell went very well, with good representation from the Legion Committee and some past NZ Representatives in attendance. It was good to see Terry Tidbury in attendance - he is the current Chairman of KRI - it would be good to see him at our AGM on August 5th so he gets a better sense of what the Legion is all about. Every team member, plus coaches and manager received a packet of NZ pins that went down really well - Steve Reidie spent a lot of time putting all the pins together, and each envelope had a large Legion logo pasted to the outside - so they won’t forget where they came from. The design of the pin proved very popular. Brian Parr chimed in and said the pins were so precious that they should only swop 1 for 6 others!!?? - a bit tongue in cheek. The camaraderie of the group is good and they all clapped for the winners, but obviously there were some disappointed applicants – more incentive for the Legion of Rowers to keep growing this Trust Fund" From Left to Right: Lesley Milne (Legion), Paula Storey (Legion), Veronica Wall - Ashburton College - Award winner, Wybo Veldman (Legion President), Brooke Kilmister - St Peters School - Award winner, Sam Cummins - Kings College - Award winner, Campbell Crouch - Hamilton Boys High - Award winner, Brian Parr (Legion) ******************************************************************************************************************* Auckland Regional Awards: Winners of the 2017-2018 - Legion Silver Salvers: Administrator of the Year – Paula Halliday – Takapuna Grammar RC Rower of the Year – Michael Brake North Shore RC Coach of the Year – James Coote Auckland RPC ******************************************************************************************************************* Upcoming Events – please go to website links below: th Saturday August 11 , 9 am - Mercer Regatta https://www.lor.kiwi/mercer-masters-regatta/ August 8 – 12th, Juniors Racing in Racice, Czech Republic: Follow them on Instagram; nzjuniors2018 Saturday September 1st, BOP/Rotorua Regatta, Lake Karapiro https://www.lor.kiwi/2018-bay-of-plenty-rowing-assoc-masters-regatta/ September 15 & 16th, New Zealand Master Championships, Lake Karapiro, Rowing New Zealand October 20 & 21st, Masters Weekend away (Labour weekend), Hawkes Bay – schedule of events will be circulated soon.
