Moniruzzaman3 and M. M. Hoque4 Abstract Bangladesh is considered one of the country’s most at risk to the effects of climate change and its coastal area is most vulnerable. This study tries to explore the experiences of cyclone bulbul affected people living in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. This study was conducted in the cyclone Bulbul affected Shymnagar Upazila of Satkhira District. Primary data collection was done using Focus Group Discussion and then a thematic analysis approach was used for analysis. Five core themes emerged from the analysis and they are, firstly, demographic, socio-economic and livelihood of the respondent; secondly, perceptions and information about climate change and salinity; thirdly, salinity and water supply; fourthly, impact of salinity on living beings with special reference to human beings; and finally the adaptation in facing salinity intrusion (in soil and water resources) caused by climate change. Findings show that the impact of climate change has serious consequences on the livelihood patterns of the affected population and on their overall health status. As a result, a number of health’s related diseases have been identified in the research area due to salinity such as diarrhea, dysentery, high blood pressure, gastric, skin problems etc. It also impacts to agricultural crops, fisheries and biodiversity. The study focuses to identify the overall impacts of those sectors. -

Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Population Movement Operation Cyclone ‘Bulbul’ Situation Report no.1 Date: 08 November 2019 Situation Overview According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s (BMD) special weather bulletin 16, issued on 8 November 2019, a cyclonic Storm, called 'BulBul' lies over west central bay and nearby East-central bay that moved from north to north-west (Latitude 16.8°N, longitude. 87.6°E) in the morning (8 November 2019). The storm is located about 760 km south-west to Chattogram Port and 710 km south-west of Cox’s Bazar Port. The BMD forecasts that the storm is likely to intensify further and move in a north-westerly direction. Under the peripheral influence of the severe cyclonic storm “Bulbul” gusty/squally wind may affect the maritime ports, north bay and coastal areas of Bangladesh. The maximum sustained wind speed within 64 kms of the severe cyclone centre is about 90 kph rising to 110 kph in gusts/squalls. The sea will remain very high near the severe cyclone centre. maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to lower local cautionary signal no three but instead hoist local warning signal no. 4 (four). Metrological Department of India forecasts that Cyclone Bulbul is likely to recurve and hit the Sunderbans between Sagar Island in India and Khepupara in Banglandesh on Sunday morning according to the Met department in India. At present, Cox’s Bazar has a lower signal than other areas and no major challenges compared to South West Bangladesh. BDRCS/IFRC Emergency Response Center is in operation and we are working in close coordination with ISCG EPWG to prepare for any possible changes in cyclone track which could have impacts for us. -

Objective: In our study, we tried to document the species’ availability, composition and diversity of the study area as well as the ethnobotanical knowledge of the people residing there about the uses of plant species in order to transfer that knowledge from generation to generation for helping in the long-term plant species conservation. Results: 44 species under 27 families were cited by the interviewee and 25 species out of 44 have food value which is the highest use value of all categories (Food, Construction, Medicine, Fuelwood and Other). -

However, for this purpose two types of experiments have conducted with selected eight agro crop species. Firstly, the seven treatments have been experimented in a Tub (an earthen pot). In this case, Tomato (Lycoperscion esculeatum) is more beneficial among these seven treatments and average benefit-cost ratio of this treatment was 3.54. Thereafter, the seven treatments also have been experimenting in Tukri (a bamboo basket). Likewise, Tomato (Lycoperscion esculeatum) is more beneficial in the second experiment and average benefit-cost ratio in this treatment is 3.52 because the soil and the cow dung mixture have been used as a potting medium. On the contrary, Long coriander (Eryngium foetidum) is more beneficial and average benefit-cost ratio in this treatment is 4.74 after using the soil and water hyacinth mixture as a potting medium. According to indigenous knowledge, these results could be developed from different climate change adaptation strategies in farming system for production of common agro crops as well as their financial suitability by the flood affected people of Bangladesh to harness the effect of climate change. -

Climate Change Influence Water Use Pattern in South-West Coastal Belt of Bangladesh

Abstract: The southwest part of the coastal area in Bangladesh is to be identified as environmental handicap by both climate change and non-climatic drivers. The water resource sector of the coastal region would most likely be affected significantly due to anticipated changes. The research tries to identify the present status and probable impacts of climate change on changing water use scenario in the transition zone of fresh water and brackish water. Necessary data were collected through questionnaire survey and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) in December, 2012. A total of 100 households were surveyed in the presence of both male and female from five types of drinking water source user namely Protected pond, Pond Sand Filter, Rainwater harvesting, Tube well and Supply water.The survey was conducted to 30 up age group and equal numbers of respondents were selected from each source user. About 49% of peoples are literate and 29% of people are engaged in open water fishing in the Sunderbans. During monsoon 87% of people use rain water for drinking purpose while in other seasons of the year they use pond sand filter and protected pond water while before Aila, Sidr 51% people were use protected pond water. In 90% of household women involved drinking water collection and 65% of households directly consume water from sources.
