Jack Forster et al. show that warming leads to a greater reduction in the size at maturity of aquatic animals, such as jellyfish, compared with terrestrial ones. The authors also found a similar temperature-size relationship in larger versus smaller aquatic species. These patterns support the hypothesis that meeting increased demand for oxygen in warm conditions is more challenging in water than on land. As a result, aquatic species face greater pressure than terrestrial species to reduce their adult size and balance their oxygen budget. See the article by Forster et al. on pages 19310–19314.
