NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 Copyright © 2017 The Nielsen Company 1 Welcome to the annual Nielsen Music Year End Report for Canada, providing the definitive 2016 figures and charts for the music industry. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year. -

Animal Homes Animals use homes to sleep, to hide from predators, to raise their young, to store food, and even to hide from weather (heat, cold, rain, or snow). All animals find shelter in or around things that are found in the habitat where they live— living (plants or even other animals) or non-living (water, rocks, or soil). Some animals stay in one location for long periods of time while other animals might make a home for short periods of time—as long as it takes to raise young or when travelling. Animals use dens as nurseries to raise their young. Dens can be burrows, caves, holes, or even small areas under bushes and trees. Caves protect animals from the hot sun during the day. They also provide shelter from wind and cold weather. Some caves are so deep underground that there is no sunlight at the bottom! Narrow cracks in rocks (crevices) and tree holes protect animals from larger predators. Most animals can’t make crevices bigger but many animals make holes bigger. Once they have a hole big enough, they move in. A burrow is an underground hole or tunnel. Some burrows have one entrance but other burrows may have many “rooms” and several ways in and out. -

(“Beaver Crossing”), commenced this action against the United States of America and the Commodity Credit Corporation (“the CCC”), an agency within the United States Department of Agriculture (“the USDA”), under the Federal Tort Claims Act, 28 U.S.C. §§ 2671 et seq., seeking damages for negligence and private nuisance.1 Beaver Crossing alleges that the CCC, which operated a grain storage facility across from Beaver Crossing’s farmland (“the Property”) from approximately 1950-1974, negligently handled grain fumigants containing carbon tetrachloride (“CT”) so as to allow the CT to migrate through the 1 Beaver Crossing’s amended complaint also asserted claims against the government for inverse condemnation and trespass. By studying its dramatic landscapes and probing into their multi-sensory manifestations in line with Symbolist theory and aesthetics , I argue that Pinter’s theatre articulates an ecocritical stance and a micropolitical critique. -

ABSTRACT This thesis is an examination of the cinematic representations of women in the inter-war period in France and Germany. By investigating five films produced during the period from 1918 to 1933, this work analyses the portrayal of women in two societies facing great upheaval. I examine the representations of women in the films through analysis of the presentation of gender, female sexuality and pronatalism, patriarchy and the dichotomised portrayal of women through the Neue Frau and la femme au foyer and class. Furthermore, I examine the similarities and differences in female portrayal which can be found between the two countries. The five films to be examined are La souriante Madame Beudet (1922), La fille de l’eau (1924), Fanny (1932), Die Büchse der Pandora (1929) and Der blaue Engel (1930). -

A pesquisa toma como objeto de análise o casal Brian e Justin de Queer As Folk. Com base em diferentes teóricos, os conceitos homossexualidade, homoerotismo e o termo homoafetividade colaboram para entender as definições acerca da atração por pessoas do mesmo sexo. Além disso, lançamos mãos da literatura sobre televisão, abordando as narrativas seriadas e um breve histórico sobre os personagens gays na TV. Palavras-chave: Queer as Folk; Homoafetividade; Homossexualidade; Séries televisuais Introdução O presente artigo é um recorte da pesquisa para o Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso “Homoafetividade na TV: análise das séries Queer As Folk, The L Word e Looking”4. O estudo foi realizado com as primeiras temporadas das séries citadas a fim de responder a questão: como são representados os casais homoafetivos em séries de TV americanas? Ou seja, de que maneira os afetos entre casais homossexuais são construídos pelas narrativas serializadas americanas? Neste artigo, abordaremos a construção da homoafetividade no casal Brian Kinney e Justin Taylor usando como corpus a primeira temporada de Queer As Folk. A série lançada em 2000 foi exibida originalmente no canal Showtime, nos Estados Unidos e no canal Showcase, no Canadá. Mostra, em cinco temporadas, histórias dos amigos gays Brian Kinney (Gale Harold), Michael Novotony (Hal Sparks), Emmet Honeycutt (Peter Page), Ted Schmidt (Scot Lowell) e Justin Taylor (Randy Harrison). -
