REPORT ON AUCTION 77 - HELD ON 12 DECEMBER 2015

Three large early armorials from the Allpress collection sold well: John Lord Hervey of Ickworth 1702, £76, Sir John Wentworth and Paul Jodrell of Duffield, both £75. The small size Jodrell went for £23. Maverick’s classic 1789 engraving for the New York Society Library, of a native American receiving knowledge, fetched £67. It was no surprise that Reynolds Stone’s uncommon wood- engraving for Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears went for £75, which compares with £23 for this artist’s more standard, but nonetheless attractive, rose for Rose Wigram. A lion’s head by Eric Gill for Desmond Flower fetched £50, and another Gill engraving, also dating from 1932, of leaping deer for Miriam Rothchild, was underpriced at £39. Two nice trade cards were on offer, one by Doddrell for a cabinet maker in Bristol (£42) and the other for Moule, bookseller of Grosvenor Square (£36). The price for another bookseller’s ticket, of S Harward of Tewkesbury, was £32. Three well-known exlibris for Fuller, Dewar and Benson by Whistler, Strang and Housman made £36, £32 and £28. A couple of dozen lots, many of frequently seen plates, were unsold. Some of these were sold after the sale, but we ask sellers to please understand that, with better material in the pipeline, our auctions secretary should not be asked to list items that are unduly common. The sale totalled £3,692 (estimate £3,500 for the items sold) before adding post-auction sales. Of the auction sales, £1,863 (est. £1,778) went to 13 buyers present in person, and £2,099 (est. £1,722) to 34 postal/email bidders.
