Anaïs Nin's Avant-Garde Revision of the Diary
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY ALCET Program Final paper Samantha LEMEUNIER FROM AUTOBIOGRAPHY TO AUTOFICTION: ANAÏS NIN’S AVANT-GARDE REVISION OF THE DIARY December 10, 2019 AKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am indebted to our three ALCET professors, namely, Isabelle ALFANDARY, Marc CREPON and Michael LORIAUX for allowing me to participate to this enriching exchange program, advising me and dispensing very elitist classes that proved to be invaluable in the redaction of this paper. I am also most grateful for their diligent email answers that demonstrate how invested in the program they are. I would like to thank the graduate students and PhD candidates Tamar KHARATISHVILI and Taymaz POUR MOHAMMAD who provided me with insightful advice, methodological guidance and encouragement, as well as with their experience of research that reinforced my desire to write a PhD. I would finally like to express my particular gratitude towards the library of Northwestern University and its actors who purchased and collected the manuscripts of Anaïs Nin’s diary and other of her writings and thanks to whom I was able to access some unpublished and exclusive contents. 1 NOTE ON THE CORPUS AND ABBREVIATIONS USED D1: Anaïs Nin’s Early Diary, Volume 2 (1920-1923) (1983) D2: Anaïs Nin’s Diary, Volume 1 (1931-1934) (1969) TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction .............................................................................................................................. 3 The plural identities of Anaïs Nin: from eccentricity to idealization ..................................... 3 State of criticism: reaching beyond academic circles ............................................................. 6 I. Inventing Anais Nin: Celebrity Authorship and the Creation of an Icon
INVENTING ANAIS NIN: CELEBRITY AUTHORSHIP AND THE CREATION OF AN ICON Thesis presented by Anita Jarczok Under the supervision of Dr. Sinead McDermott and Dr. Patricia Moran For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Submitted to the University of Limerick, September 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the process of the construction of Anaїs Nin’s public persona (or rather personae) by herself and by the popular media in the United States from 1966 onwards, with a special focus on socio-cultural processes that contributed to the production and sedimentation of Nin’s public image. This involves, on the one hand, the analysis of Nin’s involvement in the process of self-construction and self- promotion; on the other, the study of how various media contributed to the invention of Anaїs Nin. I also analyse how Nin’s name and persona have been used and what she has come to signify. I investigate what Nin has stood for, what sort of statements she has been brought to support, what products she has advertised, and what debates she has triggered. In order to accomplish these aims, I rely on the archival research, textual analysis, an examination and application of critical theories to position my study. As far as a critical framework is concerned, I situate my study between autobiography studies and cultural studies. In particular, I combine celebrity culture studies with those that focus on the author’s (self) representation in the literary marketplace, and I foreground gender as a vital factor in constructing a public personality. i DECLARATION I, Anita Jarczok, declare that the content of this thesis is my own original work except where otherwise indicated with reference to secondary sources. -

It is no accident that the prophet uses the Hebrew word bara’ here for ‘create.’ This is the same word that is used in the first line MESSAGE FROM THE PRIOR of the book of Genesis: In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth… The same power that was operative in the original As you can see, we have a new look for our quarterly newsletter. For creation is again at work in a new creation. But it’s important to note the last several editions, besides that one of the characteristics of Old Testament prophecy is that when the help of a few brother monks it points to a new age, it is not something other-worldly. It sees this and the ever patient Susan Garrison world transformed or, maybe better to say, it sees this world restored who does our layout, I have had to its original purpose, the purpose that God intended in creating it. -
Voice of the Moment: Henry Miller's Paris Notebooks and the Problem of Autobiographical Fiction
Voice of the Moment: Henry Miller’s Paris Notebooks and the Problem of Autobiographical Fiction Eric D. Lehman Department of English, School of Arts and Sciences University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, CT Abstract Research Goals In 2010 Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and My work at Yale’s Beinecke library has already Manuscript Library acquired Henry Miller’s three involved a careful reading of the documents, which “Paris Notebooks,” which have been in private along with many handwritten rough drafts, include hands and read by only a few scholars over the past diary entries, pasted in typed drafts, and even ninety years. They are a working writer’s hodge- watercolor pictures. The handwritten sections of the podge of undated diary entries, descriptions of journals present various problems of transcription and places and people, lists, letters, rough drafts, and interpretation, but even the typed sections require unpublished pieces. After close examination of the serious comparative analysis. In addition to the newly manuscripts, I assessed that these pages offer available journals, I will go back to other primary important insights, and I am writing a critical sources, the letters and ephemera, to put together a biography to expose their impact. The notebooks truer picture of his life and work during this crucial shed particular light on Miller’s process, which literary transformation. seems far less “inspired” or “prophetic” and much more “workmanlike” than previously imagined. My preparations and qualifications for this project include numerous critical essays in Nexus: The The first published result of this process, Tropic of International Henry Miller Journal and a chapter in Cancer, inspired generations of authors to write Henry Miller: New Perspectives (Bloomsbury, 2015). -

Henry Miller. Tropic of Cancer
Henry Miller. Tropic of Cancer Edited for educational purposes by Karen Nicolas Henry Miller and June (aka 'Mona' 1930s) I am living at the Villa Borghese. There is not a crumb of dirt anywhere, nor a chair misplaced. We are all alone here and we are dead. Last night Boris discovered that he was lousy. I had to shave his armpits and even then the itching did not stop. How can one get lousy in a beautiful place like this? But no matter. We might never have known each other so intimately, Boris and I, had it not been for the lice. Boris has just given me a summary of his views. He is a weather prophet. The weather will continue bad, he says. There will be more calamities, more death, more despair. Not the slightest indication of a change anywhere. The cancer of time is eating us away. Our heroes have killed themselves, or are killing themselves. The hero, then, is not Time, but Timelessness. We must get in step, a lock step, toward the prison of death. There is no escape. The weather will not change. It is now the fall of my second year in Paris. I was sent here for a reason I have not yet been able to fathom. I have no money, no resources, no hopes. I am the happiest man alive. A year ago, six months ago, I thought that I was an artist. I no longer think about it, I am. Everything that was literature has fallen from me. There are no more books to be written, thank God. -
