Your time at the COMMITJForum is far too precious to spend it reading a welcome letter. Now's your moment to meet with some of the world's leaders in corporate responsibility and make the commitments that will transform our world. Still reading? Well, here are a few thoughts on how to make the most of it. We designed the CO MM IT! Forum as a place for serious work and serious celebration. First, the work. We all know the global economy needs a boost. Many economists and policy makers say that putting the economy on a growth-footing requires America to "start making stuff again," namely "tradeables," the stuff we sell to other countries. Producing tradeables requires highly skilled workers in vast global supply chains, modern infrastructure, and far- flung energy supplies. Remaking our economy requires the active leadership of multinational corporations, their workforces, and supply chains along with governments and their public infrastructure, education investments, and energy policies. The civil sector also has a role to play through advocacy, social mobilization, and accountability. We have high expectations for the next few days. We have invited some of the world's leading thinkers and doers to this space hoping you will commit to transforming these workforces, supply chains, infrastructures, and education and energy policies. Together in the meetings you will hold you can create great possibility. In this space, you can commit to making the investments and decisions that will establish sustained wealth-building throughout our economy, society, and natural environment. Now, the celebration. Over the next few days we will honor giants: individuals, organizations, and ideas. On both Monday and Tuesday our agenda kicks off with "Big Idea Lightning Rounds" highlighting groundbreaking ideas already transforming the world. We continue with "mission possible" case studies showcasing how companies, governments, and NGOs work together on some of the world's most intractable problems. Our agenda closes first with a discussion among some of CR's founders: Tachi Kiuchi, Chairman-Emeritus of Mitsubishi; Randy Hayes, founder of the Rainforest Action Network; and BillShireman, the CEO of Futuregoo. These leaders established one of the truly groundbreaking agreements between a company and an NGO that set the template for many that came after. Lastly, we close our time together with a true celebration honoring the 2011 Responsible CEOs of the Year. If you've read this far, you now have a blueprint for your time here. Now put down this program and get to work and get ready to celebrate! Sincerely, ^ ThcCR Richard J.Crespin 'COMMIT!
