Cinema was on set and saw devastated cities and elves smeared with blood Page 3 Cover Story “After these battles, a little drama is quite enticing” – Peter Jackson Caption: Although Bard the Bowman is only vaguely described in the book, the character plays a central role in “The Battle of the Five Armies.” Page 4 Caption: “The Tinkerbell of Middle-earth: “She is sweet, but you shouldn’t get into it with her,” Evangeline Lilly warns about her character, the Ninja-elf Tauriel By Philipp Schulze Thick snowflakes fall quietly on the crumbled city walls of Dale. Richly decorated wells and gates, now overgrown with grass and weeds, testify to the former riches of the kingdom in the north of Middle-earth. And houses, slippery paths, and a row of rotten trees give an impression of the catastrophe that must have happened here. 171 years ago, Smaug the dragon breathed fire on Dale and laid waste to the city. Now the metropolis at the foot of Erebor is once again the scene of death and destruction. Frightening Orcs have begun to hunt the men who have fled to the ruins of Dale from Esgaroth. With swords and axes drawn, they fight their way, screaming loudly, through the narrow allies of the ruined city.

  • Thorin, the Leader of Dwarves
Richard Armitage: Thorin, the leader of dwarves Reaction from the audience on the character inspired me to get deeper into the role. Q: Finally Thorin and his men arrived at the Lonely Mountain, the lost homeland in this movie “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug”. Would you tell us about Thorin in this film? RA: In this film Thorin became the leader of the group after Gandalf (Ian McKellen) left them. He met a barrage of obstacles. I think getting captured by Thranduil (Lee Pace), the king of woodland elves, was the hardest to endure for Thorin and the dwarves in their quest. It was a dark chapter. For this reason the episode was a key moment in movie two for the depiction of this character. And also I had been thinking from the beginning that Thorin was a difficult role to play because of his complex feelings. He desired to reclaim the kingdom and the throne, but there was this terrible dragon Smaug under the mountain. It was his desire to get rid of Smaug and reclaim his kingdom but also a fear to escape from his obsession. In this film this became the main issue. Q: In the first film you said having the trust of the director, Peter Jackson, was helpful to play Thorin. Was it also true for this film? RA: Actually Thorin was not my favorite at the beginning. I had to justify his words and actions when I could not agree with his motives. But gradually I began to love Thorin for his loyalty for his people and fighting for them without thought of his own life.

JULI 2008 Pressekontakt: Ascot Elite Entertainment Group Molkenstrasse 21 8026 Zürich [email protected] Telefon 044 298 81 85 2 Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day Synopsis Can you get a life and discover love, all in one day? Two women are about to find out. In the sophisticated and heartfelt comedy Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Academy Award winner Frances McDormand plays the film’s title role opposite Academy Award nominee Amy Adams (star of the blockbuster Enchanted). The cast also includes Golden Globe Award nominee Lee Pace (of the hit American series Pushing Daisies), Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood), Shirley Henderson (the Harry Potter films), Mark Strong (Stardust), and screen newcomer Tom Payne. In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (played by Ms. McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself once again unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must – for the first time in two decades – seize the day. This she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level – as “social secretary.” Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Ms. Adams). Within minutes, Miss Pettigrew finds herself swept into a heady high-society milieu – and, within hours, living it up.
