Depression is something that five percent of the world’s population suffers from. That is 350 million people worldwide, according to Healthline.com. It is one of the world’s most deadly mental illnesses, leading to between 30 and 70 percent of suicides in the US alone, as stated on Mentalhealthamerica.net. Depression is defined as extreme sadness and loss of motivation. Symptoms include boredom, guilt, feeling of hopelessness, lack of sleep or extreme amounts of sleep, fatigue, loss of appetite or extreme hunger, and many more. People who suffer from depression tend to be prone to alcohol and substance abuse, as well as the inability to leave abusive relationships. There are three major forms of depression, including clinical depression, bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder, and post-partum depression, which tends to be in women only. Clinical depression is the basic form of depression and is the most diverse. Bipolar disorder also known as manic depressive is most associated with severe mood swings. People with bipolar disorder suffer from extreme depressed lows and manic or extreme soaring highs. Post-partum depression is common in women just after child birth. It is believed that post- partum is caused by both the hormonal imbalance and the fact that the child is now receiving attention that was once given to her. The goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the impact of bullying on all children of all ages. Unlike bullying, cyberbullying has no physical boundaries and is capable of reaching children on their electronic devices 24/7. It causes them to feel as if there is no escape and even that there home is no longer safe haven. With the technology constantly increasing, it is not surprising to see how bullying has taken on a new life completely. It is extending into cyberspace, thanks to the social media like, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, as well as texting. Bullying has spread to different forms and has most likely worsened over the years. Children who are frequent or long- term victims of cyberbullying can suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression, and in extreme cases, this can lead to suicidal thoughts. Several stories made local and even national news of children dealing with cyberbullying. Examples of cyberbullying include mean texts messages or emails, rumors sent by emails or posted on social media sites. There could be embarrassing pictures, videos, or fake profiles about a certain person. Parents can prevent this by being aware of the sites kids are on and what they are doing online. The parents establish rules about technology LEO and STUCO volunteer at use, understand school rules, and encourage children to report cyberbullying. Light the torches, and shine your medals because it is time for the Hamburg Games. On Tuesday, October 6, the Hamburg Center hosted its 7th annual Hamburg Games. Individuals at the Hamburg Center participated in six different activities specially designed for wheelchair accessibility. Some of the events include slingshot, bowling, a wooden maze, and even a clown! Each student volunteer from either Hamburg Area High School or Schuylkill Valley High School were assigned to accompany an individual as they made their way throughout the games. What was inspired by the Special Olympics, a similar event for special needs students, became a wonderful yearly event that all of the individuals look forward to. For some residents, physical therapy can be quite boring, so this is a much more fun way to exercise. I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Franny. He is a blind individual who also had slight mental retardation. Though he did not say much, his bright smile spoke for him. But Franny was not the only individual I had the opportunity to come in contact with. I also met Doreen, a music loving woman who would not stop bobbing her head throughout the entirety of the games. Among others, I met many wonderful people, both residents and volunteers. I will definitely be looking forward to attending the Hamburg Games in 2016.
