I was also fortunate enough to work with John Carson, another remarkable intellectual historian whose almost unimaginably ambitious work I admire greatly, to say the least. John is not only a rigorous and phenomenal historian; he is also one of the best teachers I have ever encountered. John was kind enough to do an independent study course and help me prepare for preliminary exams even while living abroad. Though now more commonly used to describe a sense of avarice or obsession with material gain, nineteenth-century discussions focused primarily on philosophical materialism, that is, materialism as a distinct body of thought that held matter as first principle. In this project, I trace the paired development of both materialist and anti- materialist discourse in the U.S., dissenting cultural traditions that clashed repeatedly as they evolved over this period. I argue that these debates about materialism reveal one way Americans responded to the continually shifting terrain of the nineteenth century. In general, anti- materialist rhetoric revealed a desire to preserve certain facets of American religious, social, intellectual, and political culture believed to be under threat. For much of the century, anti- materialist critics fixated on the allegedly atheistic implications of philosophical materialism. Materialists, by contrast, frequently voiced a desire to unseat deeply entrenched beliefs and profoundly transform American society. I argue that materialism remained steadily controversial precisely because of its connections to radical religious, philosophical, and political doctrines that called for such large-scale transformations. Throughout, I follow the careers of the few self-professed materialists who tried to disseminate materialist philosophy in the U.S. despite the inhospitable intellectual climate it provided for such ideas. These figures included English chemist, theologian, and philosopher vi Joseph Priestley (1733-1804); American physician and philosopher Joseph Buchanan (1785- 1829); English scientist, lawyer, and politician Thomas Cooper (1759-1839); American theologian, editor, and publisher Abner Kneeland (1774-1844); American physician and philosopher Charles Knowlton (1800-1850); and Scottish-born lecturer and radical reformer Frances Wright (1795-1852). As a concluding counterpoint, I also examine the work of anti- materialist physician and spiritualist Joseph Rodes Buchanan (1814-1899), son of the aforementioned Joseph Buchanan. vii Introduction: Materialism and Anti-Materialism in American Culture Today, cultural diagnoses of the U.S. as an overly materialistic nation are not difficult to find. Arguments decrying the allegedly rampant materialism of American society regularly appear in print and online, commonly bearing titles like "Long Live American Materialism," "Wanting Things Makes Us Happier Than Having Them: An Empirical Evaluation of Materialism" or "Materialism: A System That Eats Us From the Inside Out."1 This contemporary commentary on materialism generally falls into one of two categories: assessments of American values that suggest we are overly obsessed with profit and material gain at the expense of other priorities, or self-help manifestos that promise to free readers from the shackles of a desire to buy, spend, and accumulate a never-ending stream of consumer goods.     Critical Theory, Historical Materialism, and the Ostensible End of Marxism: The Poverty of Theory Revisited BRYAN D. PALMER Summary: This essay notes the extent to which poststructuralism/postmodernism have generally espoused hostility to historical materialism, surveys some representative examples of historical writing that have gravitated toward the new critical theory in opposition to Marxism, and closes with a discussion of the ironic evolution of a poststructurally inclined, anti-Marxist historiography. Counter to the prevailing ideological consensus that Marxism has been brought to its interpretive knees by a series of analytic challenges and the political collapse of the world's ostensibly "socialist" states, this essay argues that historical materialism has lost neither its power to interpret the past nor its relevance to the contemporary intellectual terrain. What I am rather interested in, however, is the specific direction media discourse took with McLuhan – especially since this direction is still vivid in our days. Although my paper starts with McLuhan, it actually takes the opposite way from the present back to McLuhan. Let me begin with an irritation. It has caught the attention of many, who have read McLuhan more carefully, and there are countless rather astonished comments: While Understanding Media in 1964 presents a point of view that is relaxed, easy going, ironic and utterly sympathetic with the media in a manner very much of this world, and also refuses for the most part to apply moral considerations, McLuhan’s first book about media, The Mechanical Bride made its points in 1951 by an explicitly judgemental, moral critique of the media.1 His second book made McLuhan more famous than The Mechanical Bride could have ever done, and this was certainly well deserved. Undoubtedly, the new media-friendly attitude must be seen as an achievement and the renunciation of moral considerations may well have made possible a new kind of neutral description. Yet what happened between the two books? How did this switch of positions come to pass, this drastic change of attitude? In his biography2, Marchand notes a turning point in 1953 – years before the National Association of Educational Broadcasters (NAEB) commissioned McLuhan to conduct the research that would be the basis of Understanding Media.3 Marchand offers a biographical explanation: McLuhan encountered the books by Harold Innis, who had approached the subject of media from the very worldly aspect of economics.

It is important for counselors to be mindful, however, of the potential for clients to be in spiritual bypass, which likely will undermine the recovery process. Individuals who struggle with substance and process addictions often participate in 12-step groups as an adjunct to the therapeutic process or in lieu of formal treatment (Knack, 2009). In fact, empirical evidence suggests that well over 50% of those who receive formal treatment for alcohol or other illicit psychoactive substances participate in some form of self-help groups, with the majority of these in groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), predicated on the 12-step model (Magura, 2007). As many as 5 million people in the United States are believed to have attended an alcohol- or drug-related self-help group over a 2-year period (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Office of Applied Studies, 2008). Furthermore, referrals to self-help groups are a commonly recommended adjunct to the therapeutic process (American Psychiatric Association, 1995), and, in many instances, researchers have found that attendance in 12-step groups enhances therapeutic benefits and supports sobriety (Gossop, Stewart, & Marsden, 2008; Moos & Timko, 2008).

It was first examined in Sax and Arluke, "Understanding Nazi Animal Protection and the Holocaust," in 1992 in Anthrozoos, the journal of the International Society of Anthrozoology (ISAZ). ISAZ is a scholarly organization dedicated, as NILAS is, to the study of the human/animal bond. The essay met with controversy and accusation, the most disturbing of which accused the authors of trivializing what is rightly seen as the center of Nazi activity--the Holocaust and the attempted extermination of Europe's Jews and other non-Aryans under the guise of racial purity and racial and ethnic cleansing--by their focus on nonhuman animals. As Sax concludes inAnimals in the Third Reich: "That the Nazis might be capable of humane legislation was such a disconcerting idea that even the detached, academic style of our paper could not make it acceptable to many people. The topic of animals, like the Holocaust itself, evokes passions of great intensity and confusion." (p. 164) Actually, in the essay as well as in this study, Sax makes two major claims.
