UT began intercollegiate competition in 1909 with the formation of the Southern Intercol legiate Athletic Association, though records are not available from that season through 1921. The Vols had no team during the 1918 and 1919 seasons because of World War I. The program commenced outdoor Southeastern Conference competition in 1933. World War II brought an end to the sport from 1943-46. Outdoor track and field resumed in 1947. Indoor meets were introduced in 1960. Records are based on scored meets of eight teams or fewer and do not include SEC or NCAA championship meets. A.W. In The News Healthy after kidney transplant, Aries Merritt returns to world championships and finishes second behind Aleec Harris in the 110-meter hurdles. SACRAMENTO, California. — Aries Merritt will be making a return to the world championships. This time, with a working kidney. The world-record holder Merritt finished second behind Aleec Harris in the 110-meter hurdles at the U.S. track and field championships Sunday. His place — as long as it was top three — didn’t really matter. He just wanted a spot. Harris proved uncatchable as he finished in 13.24 seconds. Merritt was 0.07 seconds behind. Merritt won bronze at the 2015 world championships in Beijing with his kidneys barely functioning because of a genetic disorder. He received the transplant from his sister less than a week later. Now healthy, he’s ready to see what he can do with worlds being held at the venue where he won an Olympic gold medal during the 2012 London Games. “I always felt once I was healthy, all it would take is for me to put in the work,” Merritt ex- plained. “That’s something I’ve been lacking. I haven’t been able to put in the work in two years.” Merritt, 31, said he knew he would make a strong return, although he encountered many scep- tics.

  • Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I Women’S
Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I WOMEN’S Highlights Lady Vols show world-class distance dominance: Tennessee dominated Division I women’s indoor track March 13-14 – and dominated the world for more than 10 minutes. The Lady Vols captured the school’s second team title in five years at the Division I Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships and won two events during competition at Texas A&M – including a victory in world-record time in the distance medley relay. Tennessee’s time of 10 minutes, 50.98 seconds, in that event sliced more than three seconds off Villanova’s 21-year-old world mark in the 1,200-/400-/800-/1,600-meter medley, and eight seconds off UCLA’s 2002 meet record. The relay squad was anchored for the second straight year by Sarah Bowman, who figured in both Lady Vols’ event titles and collected a second meet record when she out- leaned Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego to win the mile run. “Oh, my gosh, look at what we’ve done this weekend,” said Bowman, who also was a member of the 2005 indoor championship team. “I couldn’t ask for a sweeter weekend my senior year. I can’t even put it into words. It’s so amazing. “The heart that this team has, I could actually tear up just talking about them. Just to be out here with these girls who are putting their hearts on the line for the team, and it makes you want to do it all the more. It’s awesome to be part of a team like that.” Tennessee coach J.J.

IAAF Diamond League Media Information Guide 2013 www.diamondleague.com 1/37 INTRODUCTION With the creation of the IAAF Diamond League we set out to reinvent the one-day meeting structure of our sport, to bring clarity to the top tier circuit of international invitational competition which takes place outside the IAAF World Championships and Olympic Games. While there remain many challenges ahead if we are to make further advances and cement the IAAF Diamond League’s position as one of the world’s major sports series, we firmly believe that we have made an exceptionally good start in the first three years of the new competition structure. The IAAF Diamond League has a worldwide audience and a broadcasting reach undreamt by the Golden League series which preceded it. Thanks to a 14 meeting circuit which covers Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA, a competition programme that includes virtually the full spectrum of Olympic track and field disciplines, the guarantee of the world’s greatest athletes battling to win 8 Million Dollars in prize money, accumulating points season long to win their event’s Diamond Race Trophy, the IAAF Diamond League has captured the public’s imagination like no other non-championship athletics competition. I eagerly look forward to the 2013 season of the IAAF Diamond League which commences in Doha and concludes at the end of August and beginning of September with the finals in Zurich and Brussels.
