I developed and taught “Re-membering the Collective Past,” a course which asked students to engage with questions raised by collective memory theory in the context of literary and film analysis: how and why narratives about the past are created, and how these narratives shape our understanding !of the past, the present, the future, and ourselves. English 28 C: Realism and Romance — Introductory, survey course for English majors analyzing the conventions and historical contexts of prose fiction. I developed and taught “The Outside,” a course exploring the interconnections between the trope of the outsider and genre/ !narrative form and perspective. WR 39C: Argument and Research — Instructed undergraduate students in the conventions of conducting and evaluating academic research. Emphasis on the rhetorical context of academic !arguments, democratic debate, and researching current policy issues. WR 39C Online — Instructed undergraduate students in the conventions of conducting and evaluating academic research through new media, including interactive library tutorials, chat !sessions, and online writing tools. WR 39B: Critical Reading and Rhetoric — Instructed undergraduate students in textual analysis (including film and print media), writing, and revision with a view towards developing effective argumentation and critical reading/thinking skills. Thomas, Chair ! ! “For the Record” makes use of collective memory theory, paired with the tools of literary analysis, in order to examine the role of gendered collective memory in the literature of the Progressive Era—a time when the question of who could, and who could not belong to the American “nation-family” was tied, inextricably, to debates about racial and cultural “inheritances,” integration, assimilation and the codification of a coherent American identity and memory tradition. My various chapters exploring the works of Pauline Hopkins, Edith Eaton/ Sui Sin Far, and Abraham Cahan consider the ways gendered memory produces, and is, in turn, produced by works of

But I have come from a race on my mother’s side which is said to be the most stolid and insensible to feeling of all races, yet I look back over the years and see myself so keenly alive to every shade of sorrow and suffering that is almost pain to live. Fundamentally, I muse, all people are the same. My mother’s race is as prejudiced as my father’s. Sui Sin Far/Edith Maude Eaton1 If there is one persistent struggle that exists in the life of Edith Eaton, also known as Sui Sin Far, it is the coming to terms with her racial identity/identities in an environment of prejudice and intolerance. This lifelong struggle has become the enduring impetus for her writing; it is her intention to create a discursive space for a territory of issues, thoughts, and experiences that remain otherwise repressed in open discussions. There is no doubt that the rough terrain of race relations does not emerge only in her generation. Amidst the numerous discourses advocating segregation and hostility between races in the prolonged history of racism in America—the discriminatory agenda of which was further intensified by the extreme Sinophobia during the late 1800s—she felt the exigency to present an honest and sympathetic account of a group of Chinese immigrants who find themselves in situations of racial strife in a society of different values and tradition.

She was the eldest daughter and second child of fourteen. Her father, Edward Eaton, was an English businessman who had met her mother, Grace "Lotus Blossom" Trefusis, the adopted daughter of English missionaries, in Shanghai. The interracial marriage was considered an extreme social taboo in both cultures. At age seven, Eaton and her family left England and immigrated to Hudson City, New York, and in the early 1870s, settled in Montreal, Canada. Edith had gone to private school in England then to public school in Montreal until eleven, then continued her education at home. Because her father was unable to find steady work, the family moved from place to place and was unable to continue to afford formal schooling. Nevertheless, Edith and her younger sister, Winnifred (writing as Onoto Watanna), both became successful writers, and another sister, Sara, co-wrote a cookbook with Winnifred. Edith Eaton started her career at the Montreal Daily Star newspaper as a typesetter at 18. Her first short stories were published in the Dominion Illustrated in 1888. Despite her Caucasian appearance, Edith openly identified herself as a Chinese American in her writings. She wrote under the pseudonym Sui Sin Far, a childhood nickname that means "water lily" or “narcissus flower” in Chinese.

    CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by SJSU ScholarWorks Asian American Literature: Discourses and Pedagogies 6 (2015) 10-26 The Illegible Pan: Racial Formation, Hybridity, and Chinatown in Sui Sin Far’s ‘‘Its Wavering Image’’ by Caroline Porter In 1865, Sui Sin Far (Edith Maude Eaton), was born in England to a white father and a Chinese mother, but moved to North America as a child, where she continued to live and write until her death in 1914. During her writing career, Sui Sin Far focused much of her attention on underserved Chinese populations, and published multiple works of fiction, memoir, journalism, and ethnography detailing their plights (Hsu 10-11). Since she was rediscovered in 1974, scholars have explored the myriad ways Sui Sin Far acted as a powerful advocate for Chinese populations in North America. In her 1983 article, ‘‘Edith Eaton: Pioneer Chinamerican Writer and Feminist,’’ Amy Ling asserts that Sui Sin Far, as both a writer and activist, was ‘‘foremost… a champion of the hated Chinese’’ (289). This advocacy, critics have found, permeates Sui Sin Far’s corpus of work, but perhaps most notably, her collection of short stories, Mrs. Spring Fragrance, published in 1912. Mrs. Spring Fragrance, the most famous of Sui Sin Far’s writings, stands as the first book of fiction published in the United States by an author of mixed Chinese and white ancestry (Hsu 9). While the stories of Mrs. Spring Fragrance highlight the contentious position of the Chinese in the United States, the work also reflects Sui Sin Far’s patent interest in racial hybridity.

In "The Smuggling of Tie Co," Sui Sin Far created a woman who disguises as a man to resist the state of victimization of the Chinese female immigrants. In "An Autumn Fan," Sui Sin Far employs a trickster aesthetic to reverse the concept of "Otherness" and to break away from racial and gender stereotypes. The earliest American fiction about the Asians was written in the 1860s and 1870s and set in the California frontier; this fiction represents the conflict between the Chinese and white Californians.

  • Through the Lens of Mobility Studies, This Dissertation Reexamines
    WEDEHASE, ERIN, Ph.D. “The Path She Had Chosen”: Mobility in Works by American Women Regionalists from the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century, (2014) Directed by Dr. Karen Kilcup, 276 pp. Through the lens of mobility studies, this dissertation reexamines contemporary and historical critical assumptions about the genre of late-nineteenth and early twentieth- century regionalism. Many regionalist scholars such as Hamlin Garland, Richard Brodhead, and Amy Kaplan argue for this literature’s idolatry of backwards, homogeneous, and culturally sluggish spaces. However, through analysis of regional characters’ mobility in texts by Sarah Orne Jewett, Helen Hunt Jackson, Sarah Barnwell Elliott, and Sui Sin Far, I make three major claims that refute this mindset. First, I argue that studying mobility in these texts generates new readings of the novels' interest in social reform. Critics such as Judith Fetterley and Marjorie Pryse argue that regionalist texts critique social injustices by inviting privileged readers to feel for marginalized groups. However, rather than always reading the marginalized figures as passive recipients of readers’ pity, I argue that these characters use their mobility to remove themselves from unjust situations, thus themselves becoming agents of social change. Secondly, I assert that the characters’ movements bring new cultures into towns, mobilize existing cultures, and destabilize geographic boundaries, thus making regional spaces more about progress and cultural fluidity than demographic, spatial, and temporal fixity. Finally, this project builds on the concept of the global region, arguing that examples of mobility in these texts show how characters can simultaneously maintain local identities invested in reforming local communities and an increasing global worldview.
