Department of Transport BAYSWATER TO MORLEY BIKE BOULEVARD Stage two: Edward Street and Catherine Street A Safe Active Streets Initiative
The quiet leafy streets of Bayswater are great places to walk and ride, with shops, cafes and community facilities close at hand, and Morley and the CBD within easy reach. To improve safety and increase the uptake of cycling in the area, the Bayswater to Morley Bike Boulevard project focuses on:
• Connecting existing high quality paths to key destinations For more information: • Improving crossings at major roads such as Beaufort Street http://engage.bayswater.wa.gov.au • Connecting disjointed or discontinuous sections of path @ [email protected] • Improving signage and wayfinding @ (08) 9272 0622 What are bike boulevards? Bike boulevards are designed to create safe and comfortable riding environments for bike riders of all experience levels. They are planned to allow families, senior citizens and recreational riders to make short trips on bikes to schools, railway stations or shops. Quiet local streets with low traffic volumes and speeds make the ideal locations for bike boulevards. Routes are selected based on these requirements and to ensure they form part of the wider Perth cycle network. The aim is to enhance the street environment to make riding a bike and walking safer. In order to do this, bike symbols and red asphalt are typically used to mark out the bike boulevard route. The speed limit is reduced to 30km/h and various traffic calming measures such as raised platforms, slow points and new trees are implemented.
The background: The City of Bayswater Bike Network Plan identifies the need for a local bike route that connects the Swan River foreshore and Morley Town Centre. In 2015 the City and Department of Transport commenced work on the Bayswater to Morley Bike Boulevard to help fill this identified gap. Stage one of the bike boulevard runs along Leake Street and May Street. This route was chosen because it provides a relatively flat, direct link from the Swan River shared path to the Midland railway line shared path and connects to a number of other local destinations such as schools, parks and public transport. Construction on Stage one commenced in early 2017 and it was officially opened in September 2017. The next stage of the bike boulevard is planned to extend along May Street, Edward Street and Catherine Street to Russell Street. A number of parallel streets were considered as part of determining where the extension should be placed, however the proposed streets were considered the best location as they allow for the safest and most direct route overall. For further information about why this route was chosen, see the design opportunities and constraints map available on Engage Bayswater - http://engage.bayswater.wa.gov.au

Modifications to Drake and Rudloc Streets to provide a bicycle friendly alternate route directly into the Morley town centre will also be explored as part of the design development process. The design and construction of the project will be undertaken by City of Bayswater, with construction currently planned to commence in 2018.
