Pucker Up! It's That Time of Year. Once Again the Airwaves Are Filled with Beautiful Christmas Songs. Most Convey a Message
Yard and Garden – 12-19-2015 – Ted Griess/Extension Horticulture Assistant Pucker up! It’s that time of year. Once again the airwaves are filled with beautiful Christmas songs. Most convey a message of joy and peace on earth to all humankind. However, some Christmas tunes include in their lyrics the name of a certain plant that conveys a reason to start kissing. For example, take the song I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, or how about The Christmas Song better known as Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire? Then, there is the song I’ll Be Home for Christmas. These are just a few Christmas tunes that have in their lyrics the name of a plant scientifically known as Viscum album. Most of us know it as mistletoe. Throughout history, mistletoe has inspired all sorts of mystique and charm. It is perceived to hold magical properties. When mistletoe is in our presence, it supposedly creates an amorous atmosphere for us humans to start kissing. In contrast, this plant is actually parasitic. A parasite is defined as an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host’s expense. Mistletoe has leathery evergreen leaves with waxy white berries. It grows primarily on the branches of deciduous trees such as ash, hawthorn and oak. Deemed somewhat tropical, it is found growing mostly in areas of California and Florida. When a seed from the berry of mistletoe comes in contact with the bark of a host tree, it germinates, sending out fine thread-like roots penetrating the bark anchoring firmly into the living tissue of the host, and absorbing its nutrients. -

INTRODUCTION: BLUE NOTES TOWARD a NEW JAZZ DISCOURSE I. Authority and Authenticity in Jazz Historiography Most Books and Article
INTRODUCTION: BLUE NOTES TOWARD A NEW JAZZ DISCOURSE MARK OSTEEN, LOYOLA COLLEGE I. Authority and Authenticity in Jazz Historiography Most books and articles with "jazz" in the title are not simply about music. Instead, their authors generally use jazz music to investigate or promulgate ideas about politics or race (e.g., that jazz exemplifies democratic or American values,* or that jazz epitomizes the history of twentieth-century African Americans); to illustrate a philosophy of art (either a Modernist one or a Romantic one); or to celebrate the music as an expression of broader human traits such as conversa- tion, flexibility, and hybridity (here "improvisation" is generally the touchstone). These explorations of the broader cultural meanings of jazz constitute what is being touted as the New Jazz Studies. This proliferation of the meanings of "jazz" is not a bad thing, and in any case it is probably inevitable, for jazz has been employed as an emblem of every- thing but mere music almost since its inception. As Lawrence Levine demon- strates, in its formative years jazz—with its vitality, its sexual charge, its use of new technologies of reproduction, its sheer noisiness—was for many Americans a symbol of modernity itself (433). It was scandalous, lowdown, classless, obscene, but it was also joyous, irrepressible, and unpretentious. The music was a battlefield on which the forces seeking to preserve European high culture met the upstarts of popular culture who celebrated innovation, speed, and novelty. It 'Crouch writes: "the demands on and respect for the individual in the jazz band put democracy into aesthetic action" (161). -

The Chronicle
THE CHRONICLE ROSEBUD RETIREMENT VILLAGE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER JULY 2018 One for all you girls in the Village Clint Eastwood in 1962 about the time he was playing Rowdy Yates in Rawhide Message from Deb – July 2018 It was with much pleasure that we welcomed two new Residents to our Village in June. We send a very warm welcome to Eleanor Ashton and Margot O’Rourke. We do hope you settle in quickly to your new home and the Village and enjoy the variety of activities available. Residents will have noticed quite a bit of activity in the Village. Apologies if this is causing any inconvenience and at times deterring from the look of the Village. However, with various tradesmen, concrete trucks, deliveries and skips at least we can prove that the Village is on the improve. Currently there is various work being undertaken on seven Units, with another four scheduled to follow. I think this is a very exciting time and the Units are looking fabulous on completion. The building team is very efficient and cohesive and their work is of a high standard. They are also very obliging and helpful to deal with. The Resident Forum agreed to make changes to the garden entrance of the Village. I will be meeting with a representative from Wise Employment to have a Work for the Dole worker to assist with gardening works. A worker will be available for 25 hours a week over six months, with Eric Lee supervising the worker. My priorities are the entrance, the rockery, the lake area and a garden in Floral Court. -

ARSC Journal
HISTORICAL VOCAL RECORDINGS ROSSINI: Le Comte Ory. Michel Roux, basso (Robert); Jeannette Sinclair, soprano (Alice); Juan Oncina, tenor (Count Ory); Monica Sinclair, con tralto (Ragonde); Ian Wallace, baritone (The Governor); Cora Canne Meijer, mezzo-soprano (Isolier); Sari Barabas, soprano (Countess Adele); Dermot Troy, tenor (A Young Nobleman); The Glyndebourne Festival Or chestra and Chorus; Vittorio Gui, conductor. EMI RLS 744. "The delicious Comte Ory," wrote Chorley in 1854, "has, with all the beauty of its music, never been a favorite anywhere. Even in the theater for which it was written, the Grand Oplra of Paris, where it still keeps its place - when Cinti-Damoreau was the heroine - giving to the music all the playfulness, finish, and sweetness which could possibly be given - the work was heard with but a tranquil pleasure ••• " He goes on to blame the libretto (by Scribe and Delaistre-Poirson) which in its day was indeed rather shocking, with Count Ory's "gang" gaining admission, disguised as nuns, to the castle of the Countess he is pursuing - male voices and all! The opera was rediscovered in the 1950's and enjoyed a real success at Glyndebourne in 1954. The recording was made two years later. The New York City Opera finally got around to Le Comte Ory a year or so ago. There are several obvious reasons for the neglect of this gem of an opera. Though the score is full of delights there is no Largo al facto tum or Una voce poco fa. The arias are brilliant but not sure fire. It is not a vehicle; the soprano and tenor roles call for virtuosity of a high order, but this is an ensemble opera and no one can take over the spotlight. -
Christmas Carol Lyrics
1 COMMUNITY CHORUS PROJECT, KIDZU CHILDREN’S MUSEUM & UNIVERSITY PLACE PRESENT A HOLIDAY SING ALONG! Conducted by Caroline Miceli & Accompanied by Scott Schlesinger JINGLE BELLS A pair of hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots Is the wish of Barney and Ben; Refrain: Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh Is the hope of Janice and Jen; Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas ev'rywhere you go; Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh There's a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well, Over fields we go, laughing all the way The sturdy kind that doesn't mind the snow. Bells on bob tail ring, making spirits bright. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas; What fun it is to ride & sing a sleigh song tonight! (Refrain) Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you A day or two ago I thought I'd take a ride sing right within your heart And soon Miss Fanny Bright was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank. Misfortune seemed his lot, Santa Claus is Coming to Town We ran into a drifted bank and there we got upsot.
