Published by Larry Magne dating back to 1984 when it first appeared as “Radio Database International”, the publication once sold as many as 25,000 copies. The last print issue was in 2009, when it celebrated its 25th anniversary. The web site is also ‘going dark’. u News Item: News/Talk formatted radio stations earned several spots in the list of the top ten earning radio stations in the U.S. for 2009. The top three (population-wise) markets have nine of those 10: , Los Angeles and Chicago. The District of Columbia squeezes in one on the list. Top dog last year, according to BIA/Kelsey was KIIS-FM in L.A., followed at number two by WTOP-FM in Washington (market number 9). Third and fourth places were garnered by sister news-talk stations in New York City WCBS-AM and WINS-AM. At number five was L.A.’s KROQ- FM. Sliding into sixth was another New Yorker, WLTW-FM, #7 was KFI in L.A. while #s 8, 9 and 10 were Chicago’s WBBM-AM, New York’s WHTZ-FM, and back to The Windy City with WGN-AM. In 2008, the top five were KIIS, KROQ, KFI, WLTW and WINS. o News Item: The CRTC will be holding a hearing on May 12, 2010 to deal with several repeat offenders who have allegedly continued to breach the Broadcast Act despite earlier directives from that agency to clean up their act. The stations involved are: CHSC (1220) St. Catharines; CKLN (88.1) Toronto; CFAR (590) Flin Flon; and the AVR Network which consists of CKAV (106.5) Toronto; CKAV-2 (106.3) Vancouver; CKAV-3 (88.1) Calgary; CKAV-4 (89.3) Edmonton; and CKAV-9 (95.7) Ottawa. Non-compliance of regulations could possibly result in suspension or revocation of their licenses. o News Item: The FCC has opened a comment period for a petition filed by Richard Arsenault. He wants the commission to tweak its rules regarding pre-sunrise authorizations, Part 73.99. “My petition requests that AM stations be permitted to power up an hour earlier, at 5 a.m. with 500 watts, as opposed to the current 6 a.m. restriction,” he stated. “Hopefully we can get a number of broadcasters behind this petition.” Arsenault thinks the change would affect approximately 1,200 AM stations. Legal firm Fletcher Heald and Hildreth provided context in a recent newsletter sum- mary of the filing, noting that it would affect Class D and certain Class B stations. Arsenault wants to let AM stations on Regional Channels commence PSR operation at 5 a.m. “He suggests — and it’s hard to contradict him on this — that most listeners who have to wake up by, say, 5:30 won’t set their clock radios to such regional AM stations because those stations’ signals are not receivable at that time,” the law firm summarized. “And the same goes for car radio pre-sets: if the commuter is on the road before 6 a.m., it’s unlikely that he or she will try to tune into an AM still operating with a lame nighttime signal.” Comments on the rulemaking are due April 26. o Last Issue we had an item about a couple of new AM and FM HD radios from Sangean. After receiving three inquiries about these units, I’d done quite a bit of Internet research on them. Alas, no more news than previously reported. But, we’ll continue to scan the web for any news about the radios and report it here. u Thanks to Shawn Axelrod, Bruce Elving, Tony Fitzherbert, Wayne Heinen, Deane McIntyre, Dave Schmidt, Ed Soule, and Radio World Online.

73 and Good DX! Expiring? Time to renew? Not sure when? Need to call or e-mail someone or join e-DXN or DXAS? Check the back page - it’s all there! 14 DX Audio Service Magazine Celebrates its Silver Anniversary Magazine for Blind Radio Enthusiasts filed a void for information. Lima OH, Friday - April 2, 2010: In March 1985, Fred Vobbe had an idea. Fred knew a blind radio friend who wanted information on the hobby of radio listening. In 1985, information was passed from one hobbyist to another by word of mouth. Fred created the National Radio Club’s “DX Audio Service”, a magazine on cassette tape for blind radio enthusiasts. That started a twenty-five year adventure in radio. DX Radio Hobby - It’s not as unusual as you might think. In the early days of , when the listening audience was comprised of amateur radio operators and experimenters, a new hobby had its beginning. “DX”, (in the parlance of telegraphers) meant “long distance communications, and gradually the term DX came to mean distant reception. The early listener usually constructed his own radio receiver. The big thrill was to hear voices and music hundreds or thousands of miles away. Today, quality receivers can be purchased for less than forty dollars. The National Radio Club was formed and started publishing a magazine with details about broadcast stations and listener reports in 1933. The invention of the transistor radio in the 1950s made it easier for babyboomers to listen to out of town radio stations. Today, the National Radio Club has grown to over sevenhundred members, two web sites, technical publications, and monthly magazines in print and electronic format. Their magazines inform members about changes in broadcasting, formats, and sporting networks. Some columns feature listings of what members hear, while others cater to experi- menters. At a club meeting Vobbe asked, “How many of you grew up listening to the radio, or listened to your radio while in bed at night?” Half the people raised their hands. Many related the same story of listening to radio, under the covers, usually trying to keep it a secret from their parents. “We all woke in the morning to find the radio on the table along side our bed, so I don’t think we fooled anyone”, Vobbe said. “We listen to radio for a variety of reasons; for music, news, weather, and for sports. Many blind radio enthusiasts love listening to sporting events from far away locations, fol- lowing teams they enjoy. Distant radio listening is still as relevant today as it was fifty years ago. The only thing different is the type of receiver. They are now smaller, better, with tactile controls to aid in use.” Ultra-Lite Radios, nicknamed because of their size, now bring domestic and international stations to listeners. These radios come in combinations of AM, FM and Shortwave making listening easier. Many members listen late at night to shows such as the nationally syndicated “Coast to Coast AM” and other talk shows, and have been heard calling in. The blind lacked basic information on radio. Although the National Radio Club published a maga- zine, DX News, the wealth of information in the magazine was not available in a format a blind radio enthusiast could enjoy. Clearly, the solution needed to be the spoken word. The audio cassette tape was a low cost way to provide the information. In April 1985, Vobbe launched the sixty minute tape magazine. The first issue contained information about what was happening in the month of March and April (1985) in the radio industry. It included a history of legendary rock radio station WLS-890 in Chicago. News stories came from club publica- tions, trade journals, press releases, and listener reports. The cassette magazine later became ninety minutes long, and available as a MP3 download from the club’s web site. DX News magazine continues in printed form. Vobbe is flanked by other editors and writers. “For all of us, it’s a labor of love”, said Vobbe. “The ‘AM Switch’ deals with the FCC issue, new, or changing stations. Editor Bill Hale lives in Fort Worth, Texas. Phil Wayne is located in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and his column, ‘Marketscope’ plays record- ings of radio stations to show what radio is like in other parts of the nation. ‘Bandscan’ editor, Mark Durenberger from Minneapolis, Minnesota, presents historical stories, and technical discussions. I am the glue that holds together the magazine”, said Vobbe, who fills out the magazine with news. “It’s a group effort. None of us could do this individually, but collectively we can make a difference for the visually impaired radio listener.” Columns are sent to Vobbe as electronic audio files. Vobbe combines the columns with his writings into a completed magazine on tape. Tapes are duplicated, and mailed to members each month. To this day, the tape duplication is performed essentially the way it was done in 1985 by Vobbe. “Typically it takes about three days out of month to produce and mail a magazine”, said Vobbe. Vobbe works full time as Vice President and Chief Operator of the television stations in Lima, Ohio. He is also active in the Lions Club, serving as a past president, and has received a Melvin Jones award. Vobbe also finds time to volunteer with the county’s EMA as a Communications Deputy, and serves as EAS cochair- man. In 1989 he received the Association of North American Radio Club’s “Broadcaster of the Year” award for his commitment to providing information to the blind. He holds an amateur radio license, W8HDU, and builds his own equipment. The “DX Audio Service” magazine on cassette tape is available as a yearly subscription from the National Radio Club. The club’s web sites are www.nrcdxas.org and www.e-dxn.com. The National Radio Club is a 501C7 member supported organization. Staff members are non-paid and volunteer their services. 15 Phil Bytheway [email protected] Confirmed 9705 Mary NW DX’er Seattle, WA 98117-2334 Your successes in obtaining QSL’s and other station items

Shared tips and information from NRC members, both new and old

Greetings once again from the Heart of the Continent and welcome to the DX Tool Box Column number 15. With all the wire you have out, you may run into a problem with static buildup on the antennas. This static may try to make its way into your receiver, causing you major problems and damage that can run into a lot of money. I speak from personal experience on this one. My trusty old ICOM ICR- 70 once got zapped not by lightning but by another discharge that damaged the receiver. It ended up costing me over $200.00 to get it back up and running. In an effort to keep this static under control, you can build a simple device that is described below. I have one on my receiver at all times, whether I am at home or on a DX’pedition. This static build up can happen in any season, so do not think of it as a summer problem. Snow or dust blowing across your antenna can build up large amounts of static. The static that builds up on your antenna has no place to go but to ground, be discharged, or into your receiver. Help it not to be the latter. 16 This unit will not protect you against lightning, so it should be used in conjunction with a good lightening arrestor/ground system as I have described in earlier articles. MATERIALS NEEDED 1 - Metal box about 2” x 3” 1 - Neon bulb NE-2 1 - 10K resistor 1 - .01 microfarad (µF) capacitor, 500 volts or higher 2 - SO-239 coax connectors (or equivalent connectors depending on your set up) I have used SO-239 coax connectors on my unit and in the article. Please feel free to substitute any type of connector that you need for your set up. 1 - Small solder lug CONSTRUCTION Drill holes to mount your SO-239 connectors (or equivalent) in opposite ends of the box. Mount your connectors and attach the solder lug to any screw you wish. Solder the capacitor to the centre of each SO-239 (or equivalent). Solder the resistor to the centre of one SO-239 (or equiva- lent) and to the solder lug. Solder the neon bulb to the centre of the same SO-239 (or equivalent) and the solder lug. Remember to keep all leads as short as possible. INSTALLATION Attach the end of the box, without the resistor and neon bulb, to your receiver. You can use a double male PL-259 if you used SO-239’s. Attach the end with the resistor and neon bulb to your antenna. Make sure you hook the box up correctly or neither your receiver nor the device will work as well as they should.

Now for those of you who are not into building your own anti-static device I can suggest the An- tenna Super Market Zap Trapper. This unit comes in two forms: A coaxial fed unit or A twin lead fed unit These are receive only units made for listeners not Ham radio operators. You may find other similar units for sale and it more important that you use one than which one you use. No matter how you go, store-bought or home-made, these units are a must-have in my humble opinion.

Bits and Bites from the NRC listserv: Stephen Ponder Subject: Good Website for XE Station DX’ers If you are chasing XE radio stations, I think this website will be of interest to you ... http://www.davidgleason.com/hispanicformats.htm Although it’s primarily designed with Spanish language stations in US radio markets in mind, I think it gives DX’ers a good taste of what XE music sounds like so that we’ll be able to identify the “selec- ciones musicales” we hear (ranchera, banda, norteña, cumbio, tropical, balada, etc.). I’m hoping it will help us with identifying stations and their formats. 73 and Good DX’ing, Stephen H. Ponder, N5WBI Houston TX

From: Mark Connelly Subject: Radio Shack old catalogs online A DX’er on Facebook recommended a site which contains many old Radio Shack catalogs for viewing online. I’ve had fun making screen shot image files of some of my favorite products from the past, including four “TRF” portables that were important DX machines for me at various times, especially on Cape Cod vacations. Link is “http:// www.radioshackcatalogs.com/catalog_directory.html”. TRF’s I used over the years were catalog #’s A90L279 (1961), 12T611K (1964), 12R614K (1966), and - most famous of all - the 12-655 (1976). The last two of those listed got some “special modifications” (a.k.a. user “hacks”) including adding regenera- tion for ultra-narrow selectivity and goosed-up gain on foreign “splits” when required. I logged a lot 17 of countries on these puppies. Many of us will feel nostalgia ... and then some dismay in how Radio Shack from being a great store for hams / homebrewers to the sort of mini version of Best Buy that it is today. They’re even trying to take “Radio” out of their name. Mark Connelly, WA1ION - Bil- lerica, MA + South Yarmouth, MA

This month’s DX Tool Box web site is: eHam.net Reviews http://www.eham.net/reviews/ This site is but one small part of the eHam.net site, but it is one that relates to the hobby of BCB DX’ing as well as Ham radio. This site has thousands of reviews of equipment by actual owners. They claim over 7,800 different products are listed and over 79,000 reviews. You can pick a category say Receivers General Coverage and find 330 different pieces of equipment each with anywhere be- tween one and 70 plus reviews. I enjoy looking at these reviews to see what actual owners have to say about the piece of equipment and opinions will vary on each item. You can have the love it or hate it reviews. Many are marked with a “time owned” statement. This helps with rating a review because if the person still likes it after 6 or 12 months you get a feeling the review may be more reliable than a “I just bought this a week ago” review. Many pieces of equipment also have a picture and a bit of a description or history to them too. I am not saying it is fool proof but if you are interested in a piece of equipment and don’t know someone who owns it this might help you make a decision on purchasing it. Have some fun poking around the site when the DX is bad. If you have a favourite site you would like to share please send me a note with the location and why you think it is a good site.

The convention takes place Friday, August 27-Sunday, August 29 at the Brookwood Inn in Bushnell’s Basin, a quaint village along the just east of Rochester. For early arrivals Thursday night, we’ll have an informal dinner and perhaps a Rochester Red Wings baseball game. On Friday, it’s a day full of station tours around Rochester, followed by a cookout at the home of club member Jim Renfrew - and a chance to play with his elaborate DX setup! On Saturday, we’ll have more station tours, followed by dinner, a speaker and the world-famous club auction. (Note: please – no children during the business meeting or speaker’s presentation; hold all questions until after the speaker has finished.) And on Sunday, it’s the Quiz before we all go our separate ways. If you’re thinking of a family vacation this summer, Lisa Fybush is organizing family activities for non-radio-geek spouses and children. Please e-mail [email protected] if you want more details. --LODGING – Our host hotel is the Brookwood Inn, conveniently located just off I-490 and adjacent to the historic Erie Canal. Rooms are just $65/night for up to four people, and breakfast is included. To make your reservation, please call (585) 249-6000 and men- tion you’re with the National Radio Club. --REGISTRATION – Convention registration information will be announced in May … for now, save the date, and please let your con- vention hosts know if you’re thinking of attending so we can start to get a head count. Drop Scott a line at [email protected] or 92 Bonnie Brae Ave, Rochester NY 14618. We’ll have much more infor- mation as the convention gets closer...stay tuned!
